Some of the girls who live in Germany and have Muslim parents are threatened by female genital mutilation. This report describes the kinds and medical consequences of female genital mutilation as well as the criminal judgement. Female genital mutilation is considered as dangerous bodily harm, not as grievous bodily harm. Consent does not justify the infringement of rights. The argument that Islam justifies the infringement of rights is irrelevant by law. The human right of bodily intactness has priority over the right of religious freedom. Finally the legal regulations about dealing with personal data are presented. A legal compulsory registration still does not exist.     

In vivo 31P NMR studies of the hepatic response to L-ethionine in anesthetized rats

Phosphorus-31 surface coil spectroscopy has been used to study the effects of L-ethionine administration on the hepatic metabolism of the anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rat. ATP levels were found to decrease by approximately 30% 3 to 4 hr after administration of 1 mg/g body wt of L-ethionine to the anesthetized rat by gastric gavage. ATP levels returned to control values approximately 8 hr postadministration. The relatively small decrease in ATP level was confirmed by extraction and conventional enzyme assay and is a consequence of the mode of administration of the ethionine. Hepatic inorganic phosphate levels rose concomitantly with the ATP fall. There were no significant changes in either cellular pH or Mg2+ levels as monitored by the 31P shifts of sensitive metabolites. In vivo 31P NMR spectroscopy provides a promising approach to study the effects of hepatotoxicants on cellular ATP, pH, and Mg levels.

Spastic paretic hemifacial contracture related to multiple sclerosis: a rare and under-recognized entity

We describe an additional case of spastic paretic hemifacial contracture, an uncommon condition characterized by sustained unilateral contraction of the facial muscles associated with mild ipsilateral facial paresis. This entity has only rarely been associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) and can be mistaken for hemifacial spasm. Early consideration of MS in the differential diagnosis of young patients admitted with these symptoms is essential.     

Synovectomy and total joint arthroplasty for recurrent hemarthroses in the arthropathic joint in hemophilia

Severe hemophiliacs with intractable bleeding into one or more joints despite adequate clotting factor replacement therapy are difficult management problems. Synovectomy has controlled bleeding only in joints without significant arthritic destruction. Total joint replacements have been performed in arthropathic joints, but not when uncontrolled bleeding was a concurrent problem. This report describes a hemophiliac with uncontrolled bleeding into an arthritic knee who was successfully managed by combining synovectomy with total knee replacement.
