Spiral coils for arterial occlusion

Roentgen endovascular occlusion with spiral emboli was used in 240 patients with different diseases. The introduction of spiral emboli into the arteries of abdominal and retroperitoneal organs was fulfilled through usual angiographic catheters. Duration of the arterial occlusion was checked up in the following angiographic examinations and showed the devices described to be appropriate for a continuous arterial blockade. No complications resulting from the introduction of the spiral embolus were noted.     

Multiple regression analysis of twin data obtained from selected samples

The multiple regression analysis of twin data in which a cotwin's score is predicted from that of a proband (the member of a twin pair selected because of a deviant score) and the coefficient of relationship provides a powerful test of genetic etiology (DeFries and Fulker: Behav Genet 15:467-473, 1985). Moreover, when an augmented model containing an interaction term is fitted to the same data set, direct estimates of heritability (h2) and the proportion of variance owing to shared environmental influences (c2) are also obtained. In the present paper, the expected partial regression coefficients estimated from these models are derived, and the flexibility of the general approach is illustrated. An extended model is formulated for the analysis of data from combined samples of affected and control twin pairs that yields tests for differential h2 and c2 in the two groups as well as pooled estimates of these parameters. The application of these models is illustrated by an analysis of data from reading-disabled and control twin pairs. Because of the ease, flexibility, and utility of the multiple regression analysis of twin data, it is an appealing alternative to more traditional model-fitting approaches.     

Regulation of in vivo IgE biosynthesis in mice with complete Freund's adjuvant

Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) administered before sensitization dampened the normal and cyclophosphamide-enhanced response of high and moderate IgE responder phenotype mice (CAF1 and C57B1/6J, respectively). CFA-induced suppression of IgE biosynthesis was effective in reducing anaphylactic histamine release from approximately 2,900 ng histamine per milliliter to background levels (less than 100 ng/ml). CFA-induced ascites fluid was able to reduce the cyclophosphamide-enhanced IgE response of low-responder phenotype SJL mice from 1:320 to less than 1:5 as determined by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. Muramyl dipeptide, a mycobacterial cell wall component capable of eliciting effects similar to those seen with CFA, was shown to induce suppression of IgE production if incorporated in incomplete Freund's adjuvant. Muramyl dipeptide administered in saline was ineffective, while incomplete Freund's adjuvant alone had some immunoregulatory properties. Ongoing IgE responses were less susceptible to regulation. CFA administered to sensitized C57B1/6J mice was ineffective in inducing IgE suppression when animals were challenged with antigen.     

A clinical evaluation of MK-0787/MK-0791 for long-term administration in urological infections

MK-0787 (Imipenem)/MK-0791 (Cilastatin sodium), a new compound of Thienamycin, was administered in treatment of 35 patients (36 cases) with chronic complicated UTI or for prevention of serious infections with much complicated factors. The patients were principally treated at a daily dose of 1 g for over 10 days. The efficacy rate of 26 patients who were evaluable in the early phase (4-7 days) was 88.5%, while it became up to 92.3% in the final phase judgment. As for clinical usefulness, the result was obtained to be as high as that of the clinical efficacy. In bacteriological study, 35 strains were clinically isolated including 7 strains of P. aeruginosa from UTI. All the strains disappeared with an eradication rate of 100% after treatment. Strains appearing after Imipenem/Cilastatin sodium treatment mainly consisted of fungi. Usefulness judgements tended to be greater in the final phase than in the early phase. As for side effects, vomiting was recorded in one case, in which the administration was discontinued. In laboratory findings there were 3 cases with elevated GPT, 2 cases with elevated GOT, one case with elevated gamma-GTP, one with thrombocytopenia, and one with eosinophilia each, but these abnormal values were slight and transient. In summary our clinical study showed that Imipenem/Cilastatin sodium was a very effective antibiotic in treatment on moderate or serious UTI or preventive use for infections in compromised hosts. Considering the features of this agent, it might be more effective and useful for clinical use in treatment on polymicrobial infections including stubborn organisms than any other antimicrobial compounds. Furthermore, it was safe and well tolerable in a long term treatment.     

Organic affective syndrome associated with metoclopramide: case report

Metoclopramide, a substituted benzamide derivative, was orally administered to a patient with intractable hiccups. Dysphoria, akathisia, depressed mood with suicidal ideation, insomnia, racing thoughts, and labile affect were seen following the administration of metoclopramide. The episode met criteria for an organic affective syndrome. It is suggested that the mental status of patients undergoing metoclopramide therapy be monitored, since these symptoms have not been previously reported.     

Efficacy of radiology of the esophagus for evaluation of dysphagia

The efficacy of radiology in evaluating dysphagia was studied in 86 patients by comparison to endoscopic findings. In the 66 patients with endoscopic abnormalities radiology was correct in 54, for a sensitivity of 82%. Sensitivity of radiology improved to 95% if mild esophagitis was excluded. In the 20 patients with normal endoscopy, radiology was normal in 18 (90%). Thus radiology proved to be a reliable means of evaluating the esophagus in patients with dysphagia.
