Background  

Antimicrobial activity of 18 ethnomedicinal plant extracts were evaluated against nine bacterial strains (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Ervinia sp, Proteus vulgaris) and one fungal strain (Candida albicans). The collected ethnomedicinal plants were used in folk medicine in the treatment of skin diseases, venereal diseases, respiratory problems and nervous disorders.  相似文献

Antiinflammatory activity of aqueous extract of Tragia involucrata was tested on carrageenan-induced hind paw oedema and cotton pellet granuloma models in albino rats. In the subacute model, cotton pellet granuloma was produced by implantation of 10 mg sterile cotton in the axilla under ether anaesthesia. The animals were administered an aqueous extract at various concentrations of 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg/kg. Phenyl butazone (80 mg/kg) was used as a standard drug. The paw diameter was measured at different time intervals and the dry granuloma weight was taken after the treatment. The aqueous leaf extract (400 mg/kg) showed the maximum inhibition (84.23%) of oedema at the end of 3 h following carrageenin-induced rat paw oedema. In subacute inflammation, the extract showed 76.25% reduction in granuloma weight. The results prove that the aqueous leaf extract showed highest antiinflammatory activity in acute and subacute inflammation and also support the usage of traditional claims.  相似文献

The present study aimed to evaluate the essential oil and an isolated compound from the leaves of Polygonum hydropiper L. against dengue vector mosquito Aedes albopictus L. The plant material was macerated and steam distilled using clavenger apparatus for oil extraction. The essential oil was tested at different concentrations of 100, 50, 25, 12.5 and 6.25 ppm concentrations against the larvae of Ae. albopictus. The isolated compound was tested for larvicidal, ovicidal, repellent, oviposition deterrent and adulticidal activities at 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25 and 0.625 ppm concentrations. The essential oil exhibited LC50 values of 194.63 and 199.65 and confertifolin exhibited LC50 values of 2.02 and 3.16 against the second and fourth instar larvae of Ae. albopictus, respectively. The ovicidal activity of 100 % on 0- to 6-h-old eggs, repellent activity of 320.6 min, oviposition deterrent activity of 98.51 % and adulticidal activity of 100 % at 10 ppm concentration of confertifolin were recorded. No mortality of was observed in negative control. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the potential mosquitocidal activities of confertifolin against Ae. albopictus.  相似文献

Background Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, especially in critical care patients. Developing tools to identify patients who are at risk of poor outcomes and prolonged length of stay in intensive care units (ICUs) is critical, particularly in resource-limited settings. Objectives To determine whether the quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA) score based on bedside assessment alone was a promising tool for risk prediction in low-resource settings. Methods A retrospective cohort of adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (SA), was recruited into the study between 2014 and 2018. The association of qSOFA with in-ICU mortality was measured using multivariable logistic regression. Discrimination was assessed using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and the additive contribution to a baseline model using likelihood ratio testing. Results The qSOFA scores of 0, 1 and 2 were not associated with increased odds of in-ICU mortality (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.24, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.86 - 1.79; p=0.26) in patients with infection, while the qSOFA of 3 was associated with in-ICU mortality in infected patients (aOR 2.82; 95% CI 1.91 - 4.16; p<0.001). On the other hand, the qSOFA scores of 2 (aOR 3.25; 95% CI 1.91 - 5.53; p<0.001) and 3 (aOR 6.26, 95% CI 0.38 - 11.62, p<0.001) were associated with increased odds of in-ICU mortality in patients without infection. Discrimination for mortality was fair to poor and adding qSOFA to a baseline model yielded a statistical improvement in both cases (p<0.001). Conclusion qSOFA was associated with, but weakly discriminant, for in-ICU mortality for patients with and without infection in a resource-limited, public hospital in SA. These findings add to the growing body of evidence that support the use of qSOFA to deliver low-cost, high-value critical care in resource-limited settings Contributions of the study This study expanded the data supporting the use of qSOFA in resource-limited settings beyond the emergency department or ward to include patients admitted to the ICU. Additionally, this study demonstrated stronger predictive abilities in a population of patients admitted with trauma without suspected or confirmed infection, thus providing an additional use of qSOFA as a risk-prediction tool for a broader population.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the mosquitocidal activity of fractions and a compound niloticin from the hexane extract of Limonia acidissima L. leaves on eggs, larvae and pupae of Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae). In these bioassays, the eggs, larvae and pupae were exposed to concentrations of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 ppm for fractions and 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 ppm for compound. After 24 h, the mortality was assessed and the LC50 and LC90 values were calculated for larvae and pupae. Per cent ovicidal activity was calculated for eggs after 120 h post treatment. Among the sixteen fractions screened, fraction 8 from the hexane extract of L. acidissima generated good mosquitocidal activity against Ae. aegypti. The LC50 and LC90 values of fraction 8 were 4.11, 8.04 ppm against Ae. aegypti larvae and 4.19, 8.10 ppm against Ae. aegypti pupae, respectively. Further, the isolated compound, niloticin recorded strong larvicidal and pupicidal activities. The 2 ppm concentration of niloticin showed 100% larvicidal and pupicidal activities in 24 h. The LC50 and LC90 values of niloticin on Ae. aegypti larvae were 0.44, 1.17 ppm and on pupae were 0.62, 1.45 ppm, respectively. Niloticin presented 83.2% ovicidal activity at 2 ppm concentration after 120 h post treatment and niloticin exhibited significant growth disruption and morphological deformities at sub lethal concentrations against Ae. aegypti. The structure of the isolated compound was identified on the basis of single XRD and spectral data (1H NMR and 13C NMR) and compared with literature spectral data. The results indicate that niloticin could be used as a potential natural mosquitocide.  相似文献

γ-sitosterol isolated from Lippia nodiflora was taken as ligand for molecular docking. The molecular targets, glucokinase, Fructose 1, 6- bisphosphatase 1, Human multidrug resistance protein 1 and Cytochromes P450 whose crystallographic structures are available on the PDB database as 1V4S, 2JJK, 3LC4, 2CBZ respectively, were used for the docking analysis using the Autodock tool v 4.2 and ADT v1.5.4 programs. The docking studies of the ligand γ- sitosterol with four different target proteins showed that this is a good molecule which docks well with various targets related to diabetes mellitus. Hence γ-sitosterol can be considered for developing into a potent antidiabetic drug.  相似文献

Aim

Symplocos cochinchinensis (Lour.) S. Moore. is used in Indian system of traditional medicine to treat diabetes mellitus. The present study aims to investigate the antidiabetic efficacy of the hexane extract of Symplocos cochinchinensis leaves in high fat diet-low streptozotocin (STZ) induced type 2 diabetic rats.

Materials and methods

The doses for the study were fixed based on Irwin test. The hypoglycemic effect of the hexane extract of Symplocos cochinchinensis leaves were studied in normal rats. Oral glucose and insulin tolerance tests were carried out. The antihyperglycemic effect of the hexane extract at 250 and 500 mg/kg was studied in high fat diet-low STZ induced type 2 diabetic rats for 28 days.

Results

The extracts showed no adverse effects up to 5 g/kg concentration. In hypoglycemic study, after treatment with hexane extract at 250 and 500 mg/kg the blood glucose was mildly reduced. In oral glucose tolerance test, the treatment with the hexane extract at 250 and 500 mg/kg showed a highly significant reduction of 12.07% and 23.58% in plasma glucose levels, respectively 30 min after glucose load. The insulin tolerance test also showed improved insulin sensitivity after 60 min of insulin treatment. In high fat diet-low STZ induced type 2 diabetic rats, after 28 days treatment with the hexane extract at 250 and 500 mg/kg reduced the plasma glucose level by 17.04% and 42.10%, respectively. A significant reduction in plasma insulin, plasma and hepatic total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and free fatty acids (FFA) and a significant increase in liver glycogen were observed in treated diabetic rats.

Conclusion

This study demonstrated the potential antidiabetic property of hexane extract of Symplocos cochinchinensis leaves on type 2 diabetes mellitus, thus justifying its traditional usage.  相似文献

Ethnopharmacological relevance

For thousands of years, medicinal plants have played an important role throughout the world in treating and preventing a variety of diseases. Kani tribal people in Tirunelveli hills still depend on medicinal plants and most of them have a general knowledge of medicinal plants which are used for first aid remedies, to treat cough, cold, fever, headache, poisonous bites and some simple ailments.

Aim of the study

The present study was initiated with an aim to identify traditional healers who are practicing herbal medicine among the Kani tribals in Tirunelveli hills of Western Ghats, India and quantitatively document their indigenous knowledge on the utilization of medicinal plants particularly most common ethnomedicinal plants.

Methods

Field study was carried out over a period of 4 years in Tirunelveli hills. The ethnomedicinal information was collected through interviews among the Kani traditional healers. The collected data were analyzed through use value (UV), informant consensus factor (Fic), fidelity level (FL) and relative importance (RI).

Results

A total of 90 species of plants distributed in 83 genera belonging to 52 families were identified as commonly used ethnomedicinal plants by the Kani traditional healers in Tirunelveli hills for the treatment of 65 types of ailments. These ailments were categorized into 15 ailment categories based on the body systems treated. Leaves were the most frequently used plant parts and most of the medicines were prepared in the form of paste and administered orally. Fic values of the present study indicated that there was a high agreement in the use of plants in the treatment of jaundice and diabetes among the users. Dermatological infections/diseases and gastro-intestinal disorders had highest use-reports and 29 species of plants had the highest fidelity level of 100%. The most important species according to their use value were Gymneme sylvestre (2.00), Melia azedarach, Murraya koenigii, Syzygium cumini and Terminalia chebula (1.83).

Conclusion

As a result of the present study we can recommend the plants Alpinia galanga, Azadirachta indica, Calophyllum inophyllum, Gymnema sylvestre, Leucas aspera, M. azedarach, Mollugo nudicaulis, Ocimum tenuiflorum, S. cumini, T. chebula and Tribulus terrestris (with high UV and RI values), Bambusa arundinacea, Datura metel, Evolvulus nummularius, Opuntia dillenii and Physalis minima (newly reported claims with highest FL) for further ethnopharmacological studies for the discovery of potential new drugs.  相似文献

Objectives Friedelin was isolated from Azima tetracantha Lam. leaves collected from Kallakurichi, Villuppuram district, Tamil Nadu, India. The anti‐inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities of friedelin have been investigated in Wistar rats and mice. Methods Friedelin was isolated from the hexane extract of leaves of A. tetracantha using column chromatography. The effects of friedelin on inflammation were studied by using carrageenan‐induced hind paw oedema, croton oil‐induced ear oedema, acetic acid‐induced vascular permeability, cotton pellet‐induced granuloma and adjuvant‐induced arthritis. The analgesic effect of friedelin was evaluated using the acetic acid‐induced abdominal constriction response, formalin‐induced paw licking response and the hot‐plate test. The antipyretic effect of friedelin was evaluated using the yeast‐induced hyperthermia test in rats. Key findings In the acute phase of inflammation, maximum inhibitions of 52.5 and 68.7% (P < 0.05) were noted with 40 mg/kg friedelin in carrageenan‐induced paw oedema and croton oil‐induced ear oedema, respectively. Administration of friedelin (40 mg/kg) significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the formation of granuloma tissue induced by cotton pellet at a rate of 36.3%. In the adjuvant‐induced arthritis test friedelin inhibited 54.5% of paw thickness. Friedelin inhibited acetic acid‐induced vascular permeability in mice. Friedelin also produced significant (P < 0.05) analgesic activity in the acetic acid‐induced abdominal constriction response and formalin‐induced paw licking response. In the hot‐plate test, friedelin did not show any significant results when compared with control. Treatment with friedelin showed a significant (P < 0.05) dose‐dependent reduction in pyrexia in rats. Conclusions The results suggested that friedelin possessed potent anti‐inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities.  相似文献
