This is a comparative study between manual volumetry (MV) and voxel based morphometry (VBM) as methods of evaluating the volume of brain structures in magnetic resonance images. The volumes of the hippocampus and the amygdala of 16 panic disorder patients and 16 healthy controls measured through MV were correlated with the volumes of gray matter estimated by optimized modulated VBM. The chosen structures are composed almost exclusively of gray matter. Using a 4 mm Gaussian filter, statistically significant clusters were found bilaterally in the hippocampus and in the right amygdala in the statistical parametric map correlating with the respective manual volume. With the conventional 12 mm filter,a significant correlation was found only for the right hippocampus. Therefore, narrow filters increase the sensitivity of the correlation procedure, especially when small brain structures are analyzed. There are few studies regarding the clinical presentation of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in children. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical manifestations, major complications and causes of death in children with VL. A retrospective study was performed with pediatric patients (< or = 14 years old) with a diagnosis of VL in Fortaleza, state of Ceara, in Northeast Brazil. A total of 120 patients were included. The mean age was 5 +/- 3.9 years, and 53.4% were male. The main clinical manifestations at admission were: fever (94.2%), splenomegaly (94.2%), hepatomegaly (82.5%), anorexia (55%), malaise (47.5%), cough (41.6%), abdominal pain (27.5%), vomiting (25.5%), and diarrhea (16.6%). Acute kidney injury was found in 25% of the patients. The main complication during hospital stay was pulmonary infection, found in 27.5% (n = 33), leading to sepsis in 3 cases. Glucantime was the drug of choice in 90% (n = 108) of the cases, amphotericin B in 7.5% (n = 9) and AmBisome in 2.5% (n = 3). Death occurred in 4 cases (3.3%) due to sepsis (3 cases) and hemorrhagic complications (1 case). Visceral leishmaniasis is a frequent infection among children in our region. The main complications were pulmonary infection and acute kidney injury related to antiparasitic therapy, along with sepsis and hemorrhage. 相似文献

Botulinum toxin (BTX) is the most potent biological toxin used for the treatment of urologic conditions. During the last 3 years, the use of BTX has been extended to the treatment of symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia, however, the actual mechanism through which BTX can reduce prostate volume and infravesical resistance is not well understood. This article reviews the main effects of BTX in prostate tissues. A critical analysis of the outcomes of patients who were studied in clinical series that used this toxin to treat lower urinary tract symptoms related to benign prostatic hyperplasia is also presented. 相似文献

Skin wound healing is a complex process involving many types of cells and molecules and often results in scar tissue formation in adult mammals. However, scarless healing occurs in foetal skin and minimal scars may occur after cutaneous healing in the adult with reduced inflammation. Alpha‐melanocyte‐stimulating hormone (α‐MSH) is widely distributed within the central nervous system and in other body regions, such as the skin, and has strong anti‐inflammatory activity. The aim in the present experiments was to learn whether intraperitoneal (i.p) injection of α‐MSH just before skin wounds antagonize inflammation and improves skin wound healing in adult mice. C57BL/6 young adult mice received an i.p. injection of 1 mg/kg of α‐MSH and, 30 min later, two circular through‐and‐through holes (6.5 mm diameter) were made in their dorsal skin under anaesthesia. Control mice were wounded after vehicle injection. The wound healing process was analysed macroscopically and microscopically at 3, 7, 40 and 60 days. Skin samples were fixed in formalin, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 5 μm, stained with H&E or toluidine blue for cell analysis or Gomori's trichrome for extracellular matrix (ECM) analysis. Other samples were fixed in DMSO+methanol, embedded in paraplast and incubated with anti‐CD45, antismooth muscle actin, anticollagen‐I and anticollagen‐III for immunofluorescence analysis. Alpha‐MSH significantly reduced the number of leucocytes, mast cells and fibroblasts at 3 and 7 days after injury. On days 40 and 60, α‐MSH reduced scar area and improved the organization of the collagen fibres indicating that it may direct the healing into a more‐regenerative/less‐scarring pathway. 相似文献
