Synthesis of Zeolites from Fine-Grained Perlite and Their Application as Sorbents

The hydrothermal alteration of perlite into zeolites was studied using a two-step approach. Firstly, perlite powder was transformed into Na-P1 (GIS) or hydro(xy)sodalite (SOD) zeolites at 100 °C and 24 h using 2 or 5 M NaOH solutions. Secondly, the Si:Al molar ratio of the reacted Si-rich solution was adjusted to 1 by Na-aluminate addition to produce zeolite A (LTA) at 65 or 95 °C and 6 or 24 h at an efficiency of 90 ± 9% for Al and 93 ± 6% for Si conversion. The performance of these zeolites for metal ion removal and water softening applications was assessed by sorption experiments using an artificial waste solution containing 4 mmol/L of metal ions (Me²⁺: Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Ba²⁺ and Zn²⁺) and local tap water (2.1 mmol/L Ca²⁺ and 0.6 mmol/L Mg²⁺) at 25 °C. The removal capacity of the LTA-zeolite ranged from 2.69 to 2.86 mmol/g for Me²⁺ (=240–275 mg/g), which is similar to commercial zeolite A (2.73 mmol/g) and GIS-zeolite (2.69 mmol/g), and significantly higher compared to the perlite powder (0.56 mmol/g) and SOD-zeolite (0.88 mmol/g). The best-performing LTA-zeolite removed 99.8% Ca²⁺ and 93.4% Mg²⁺ from tap water. Our results demonstrate the applicability of the LTA-zeolites from perlite for water treatment and softening applications.

Zusammenfassung Die akute Endometritis parietalis und eitrige Entzündung der fetalen Teile der Placenta während der Schwangerschaft hängt in den beiden beschriebenen Fällen, und wahrscheinlich auch in einigen im Schrifttum niedergelegten Fällen, ursächlich mit dem frühzeitig erfolgten Blasensprung zusammen, der den Scheidenkeimen die aufsteigende Infektion der Uterushöhle ermöglicht. Dabei kommen verschiedene Bakterien (Streptokokken, Diplostreptokokken, Staphylokokken und Bacterium coli) als Infektionserreger in Betracht. Im 1. Fall, bei dem die Infektion einen ganz überraschenden Tod der Mutter zur Folge hatte, ließ sich an Hand der Schnitte nachweisen, daß die Mikroorganismen nicht durch die Eihäute hindurch in den intervillösen Raum und von hier aus in den mütterlichen Kreislauf gelangten, sondern daß sie am Rande der Placenta geradeswegs in mütterliche Venen eindrangen und so die Allgemeininfektion verursachten.Mit 2 Textabbildungen.     

CDK13-related disorder: Report of a series of 18 previously unpublished individuals and description of an epigenetic signature

PurposeRare genetic variants in CDK13 are responsible for CDK13-related disorder (CDK13-RD), with main clinical features being developmental delay or intellectual disability, facial features, behavioral problems, congenital heart defect, and seizures. In this paper, we report 18 novel individuals with CDK13-RD and provide characterization of genome-wide DNA methylation.MethodsWe obtained clinical phenotype and neuropsychological data for 18 and 10 individuals, respectively, and compared this series with the literature. We also compared peripheral blood DNA methylation profiles in individuals with CDK13-RD, controls, and other neurodevelopmental disorders episignatures. Finally, we developed a support vector machine–based classifier distinguishing CDK13-RD and non–CDK13-RD samples.ResultsWe reported health and developmental parameters, clinical data, and neuropsychological profile of individuals with CDK13-RD. Genome-wide differential methylation analysis revealed a global hypomethylated profile in individuals with CDK13-RD in a highly sensitive and specific model that could aid in reclassifying variants of uncertain significance.ConclusionWe describe the novel features such as anxiety disorder, cryptorchidism, and disrupted sleep in CDK13-RD. We define a CDK13-RD DNA methylation episignature as a diagnostic tool and a defining functional feature of the evolving clinical presentation of this disorder. We also show overlap of the CDK13 DNA methylation profile in an individual with a functionally and clinically related CCNK-related disorder.     

Extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Neisseria gonorrhoeae causing possible gonorrhoea treatment failure with ceftriaxone plus azithromycin in Austria,April 2022

We describe a gonorrhoea case with ceftriaxone plus high-level azithromycin resistance. In April 2022, an Austrian heterosexual male was diagnosed with gonorrhoea after sexual intercourse with a female sex worker in Cambodia. Recommended treatment with ceftriaxone (1 g) plus azithromycin (1.5 g) possibly failed. Worryingly, this is the second strain in an Asian Neisseria gonorrhoeae genomic sublineage including high-level azithromycin-resistant strains that developed ceftriaxone resistance by acquisition of mosaic penA-60.001. Enhanced resistance surveillance and actions are imperative to prevent spread.     

Venous drainage patterns in a case of pseudotumor cerebri following unilateral radical neck dissection

We report the extracranial venous ultrasound findings in a case of pseudotumor cerebri (PTC) following unilateral radical neck dissection (rND). PTC is known to be a rare complication following bilateral rND, and is caused by venous outflow obstruction. Single cases of PTC have been reported after unilateral rND, and are thought to be due to resection of the dominant internal jugular vein (IJV) in the presence of a hypoplastic or aplastic contralateral transverse sinus. Our patient developed PTC despite prominent flow in the contralateral IJV as shown by venous ultrasound. No compensatory increase in flow in the vertebral veins was observed, as confirmed by digital subtraction angiography. We conclude that the physiological collateral function of the vertebral venous system and deep neck veins was insufficient and contributed to global venous outflow obstruction in our case of unilateral rND.
