The tropical endogeic earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus, a non-standard species used in ecotoxicity, has been found in crude oil-contaminated habitats. We estimated the removal of total hydrocarbons from heavy crude “Maya” oil on an artificially contaminated soil with a median lethal concentration of P. corethrurus and an addition of oil palm bagasse. P. corethrurus had a high survival rate, and the addition of oil palm bagasse led to a greater growth and an increase in abundance of bacteria and fungi. The activity of P. corethrurus and the nutritional quality of oil palm bagasse had a significant impact on the removal of a larger amount of petroleum hydrocarbons from contaminated soil. We concluded that the endogeic earthworm P. corethrurus and oil palm bagasse acted synergistically to achieve a more effective removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons from soil. These results show the potential for using P. corethrurus to remove, either directly or indirectly, crude oil from soil.

Pseudoangiosarcomatous squamous cell carcinoma, also called pseudovascular, pseudoangiomatoid or adenoid pseudovascular carcinoma, is an uncommon and highly aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma. Histologically, it is characterized by proliferation of atypical keratinocytes with acantholysis and formation of pseudovascular spaces, forming anastomosed channels lined with neoplastic cells that invade the dermis. These cells are positive for cytokeratin and negative for vascular markers such as CD31 and CD34. There are few reports of this variant in the literature. Skin, breast, lung and vulva involvement have been described, but to the best of our knowledge, no cases involving the penis has been described. This study aims to describe the first case of angiosarcomatous squamous cell carcinoma of the penis. The patient presented with a painful lesion in the penis associated with urinary retention. Macroscopic findings exhibited an ulcerative vegetating lesion that involving the entire glans and part of the penile body, as well as infiltration of penile structures and scrotal skin. Microscopy shows atypical proliferation of sarcomatous keratinocyte pattern mimicking vascular spaces. Human papilloma virus (HPV) biomarkers and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were all negative. Advanced penile squamous cell carcinoma with aggressive lymph node metastasis. This report presents the first case of penile pseudoangiosarcomatous squamous cell carcinoma, as an important differential diagnosis.  相似文献

Vaccine adjuvants are compounds that enhance/prolong the immune response to a co-administered antigen. Saponins have been widely used as adjuvants for many years in several vaccines – especially for intracellular pathogens – including the recent and somewhat revolutionary malaria and shingles vaccines. In view of the immunoadjuvant potential of Q. brasiliensis saponins, the present study aimed to characterize the QB-80 saponin-rich fraction and a nanoadjuvant prepared with QB-80 and lipids (IMXQB-80). In addition, the performance of such adjuvants was examined in experimental inactivated vaccines against Zika virus (ZIKV). Analysis of QB-80 by DI-ESI-ToF by negative ion electrospray revealed over 29 saponins that could be assigned to known structures existing in their congener Q. saponaria, including the well-studied QS-21 and QS-7. The QB-80 saponins were a micrOTOF able to self-assembly with lipids in ISCOM-like nanoparticles with diameters of approximately 43 nm, here named IMXQB-80. Toxicity assays revealed that QB-80 saponins did present some haemolytical and cytotoxic potentials; however, these were abrogated in IMXQB-80 nanoparticles. Regarding the adjuvant activity, QB-80 and IMXQB-80 significantly enhanced serum levels of anti-Zika virus IgG and subtypes (IgG1, IgG2b, IgG2c) as well as neutralized antibodies when compared to an unadjuvanted vaccine. Furthermore, the nanoadjuvant IMXQB-80 was as effective as QB-80 in stimulating immune responses, yet requiring fourfold less saponins to induce the equivalent stimuli, and with less toxicity. These findings reveal that the saponin fraction QB-80, and particularly the IMXQB-80 nanoadjuvant, are safe and capable of potentializing immune responses when used as adjuvants in experimental ZIKV vaccines.  相似文献

The interaction between the infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) capsid proteins VP2 and VP3 has been analyzed in vivo using baculovirus expression vectors. Data presented here demonstrate that the 71-amino acid C-terminal-specific domain of pVP2, the VP2 precursor, is essential for the establishment of the VP2-VP3 interaction. Additionally, we show that coexpression of the pVP2 and VP3 polypeptides from independent genes results in the assembly of virus-like particles (VLPs). This observation demonstrates that these two polypeptides contain the minimal information required for capsid assembly, and that this process does not require the presence of the precursor polyprotein.  相似文献

Slices (n = 45) from the somatosensory cortex of mouse (P8-13) generated spontaneous bursts of activity (0.10 +/- 0.05 Hz) that were recorded extracellularly. Multiunit action potential (AP) activity was integrated and used as an index of population activity. In this experimental model, seizure-like activity (SLA) was evoked with bicuculline (5-10 microM) or N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA, 5 microM). SLA was an episode with repetitive bursting at a frequency of 0.50 +/- 0.06 Hz. To evaluate whether SLA was associated with a change in synchrony, we obtained simultaneous intracellular and extracellular recordings (n = 40) and quantified the relationship between individual cells and the surrounding population of neurons. During the SLA there was an increase in population activity and bursting activity was observed in neurons and areas that were previously silent. We defined synchrony as cellular activity that is consistently locked with the population bursts. Signal-averaging techniques were used to determine this component. To quantitatively assess change in synchronous activity at SLA onset, we estimated the entropy of the single cell's spike trains and subdivided this measure into network burst-related information and noise-related entropy. The burst-related information was not significantly altered at the onset of NMDA-evoked SLA and slightly increased when evoked with bicuculline. The signal-to-noise ratio determined from the entropy estimates showed a significant decrease (instead of an expected increase) during SLA. We conclude that the increased population activity during the SLA is attributed to recruitment of neurons rather than to increased synchrony of each of the individual elements.  相似文献

Local anaesthesia for fibreoptic bronchoscopy should be given by a safe technique that is not unpleasant to the patient and should provide acceptable conditions for the bronchoscopist. Single injection transcricoid local anaesthesia was compared with the "spray as you go" technique in patients having day case fibreoptic bronchoscopy. Patients were randomised to receive either 100 mg lignocaine by a single cricothyroid puncture or 240 mg lignocaine instilled through the bronchoscope under direct vision. Further doses were given by the operator to both groups as required. The 30 patients receiving transcricoid lignocaine coughed less (3.56 (SD 3.1) coughs/min) than the 32 patients receiving lignocaine through the bronchoscope (5.89 (4.8)/min) despite receiving a lower total dose of lignocaine (322 (25.9) v 451 (20.9) mg). Cricothyroid puncture was not associated with any complications and was not unpleasant for the patients.  相似文献

Bill 7, the most recent amendment to the Ontario Mental Health Act was introduced in December 1986. It has resulted in some major changes to the practice of psychiatry, especially in provincial hospitals. We compared patients who had discharged themselves against medical advice (AMA) during the six months before the Bill was enacted, with those who discharged themselves AMA in the 12 months following. Significantly more patients discharged themselves AMA in the post- than the pre-Bill period. The majority of these were potentially treatable, acutely ill individuals with schizophrenia or affective disorder. We argue that Bill 7 has largely failed in its objective to improve the overall "quality of care" to psychiatric patients, at least in the short term.  相似文献

Summary The interaction between sufentanil, a -opioid agonist, and the Ca2+ antagonist nimodipine on respiration and on the development of opioid tolerance in awake rats has been analyzed. Our previous work demonstrated that chronic treatment with nimodipine together with sufentanil increases the analgesic potency of the opioid 50 fold. Therefore, we have investigated whether the opioid-induced respiratory depression is potentiated in parallel with the analgesia. Ventilation was measured by the whole body plethysmographic method. In naive rats, sufentanil (10–80 g/kg) consistently induced a dose-dependent respiratory depression. Pretreatment with nimodipine (200 g/kg) potentiated this effect but to a lesser extent than it potentiated analgesia. After chronic administration of the opioid (2 g/h, 7 days) tolerance was manifested as a reduction in both the area under the time course curve and in the maximum effect. Nimodipine (1 g/h) administered concurrently with sufentanil for 7 days counteracted the tolerance to respiratory depression but no additional potentiation was observed. These results demonstrate that the interaction between nimodipine and sufentanil is not limited to antinociception but also exends to respiratory depression. However, compared with analgesia, the clinical relevance of a potential increase in opioid-induced respiratory depression by nimodipine may be negligible.Correspondence to: M. A.
