Zur theoretischen beschreibung der kinetik der radikalischen terpolymerisation von styrol mit N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidon und methylmethacrylat anhand des klassischen copolymerisationsmodells

The polymerization rate of the ternary monomer system, styrene, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, and methyl methacrylate, was investigated in bulk at 60°C with AIBN as initiator. The results were interpreted by means of the well known classical reaction model and a newly derived simplified reaction model. The classical rate equation describes the reaction rate correctly in general, however, supplementary assumptions are needed for this special monomer system. The simplified reaction model is useful to estimate the terpolymerization rate, if initiation rates for the monomer mixtures are not known.     

Leptospirosis in piggery workers on Trinidad

Of 133 cases of human leptospirosis recorded in Trinidad between 1977 and the end of February 1982, at least eight (6%) were in people who worked on pig farms. Three of the eight died, and their presumptive infecting serogroups were Icterohaemorrhagiae (3), Canicola (2), Pyrogenes (2) and Grippotyphosa (1). Six of the eight cases were followed up. Altogether, sera from 201 pigs, 78 other livestock animals, 38 workers and 34 dogs were tested for leptospiral agglutinins. The seropositivity prevalence among pigs on farms with human illness (43% greater than or equal to 1:100) was similar to that in pigs from farms not associated with illness (46%), but the titres among the former group (geometric mean 209.5) were higher than among the latter (91.5), where only titres less than or equal to 1:400 were recorded. Similar infecting serogroups were recorded among pigs on the two groups of farms, with Icterohaemorrhagiae, Autumnalis, Canicola and Pyrogenes most frequently recorded overall. There was little evidence of the pig-adapted serogroups Pomona and Tarassovi. Twelve of 13 workers (93%) from a farm on which at least two other people had contracted leptospirosis had serological evidence of exposure, compared with seven of 24 (29%) on a neighbouring farm not associated with human illness. Dogs and rodents are thought to be the major sources of leptospirosis in pigs and piggery workers in Trinidad.     

Die Todesursache bei der Nebelkatastrophe im Maastal

Zusammenfassung Die Ursachen der Nebelkatastrophe im belgischen Maastal 1930 lassen sich heute nach dem Abschluß der amtlichen Untersuchungen mit größerer Sicherheit beurteilen als bisher. Alle zum Teil sehr phantastischen Vermutungen über neue Krankheiten und mysteriöse Ursachen sind dadurch hinfällig geworden. Es steht außer jedem Zweifel, daß nur eine schwere Verunreinigung der Luft durch industrielle Gase, Dämpfe oder Schwebstoffe, die sich durch ein ganz seltenes Zusammentreffen von sehr verschiedenartigen, nicht zuletzt auch klimatischen Umständen zeitweise in abnorm hohen Konzentrationen angereichert hatten, die Ursache war. Daß dabei, wie offiziell angegeben wird, die Verbrennungsprodukte des Schwefels aus der Kohle eine bedeutende Rolle gespielt haben, ist durchaus zuzugeben. Es fragt sich aber, ob und wieweit noch andere Stoffe beteiligt waren. Die zahlreichen Todesfälle finden keine befriedigende Erklärung, wenn man lediglich eine Einatmung von Schwefeldioxyd, von Schwefeltrioxyd bzw. von mit Schwefelsäure beladenen Schwebstoffen annimmt. Höchstwahrscheinlich haben außerdem noch weitere, und zwar auch resorptiv toxisch wirkende Giftstoffe mitgewirkt. Soweit auf Grund der amtlichen Feststellungen und sonstigen Ermittlungen ein Urteil möglich ist, ist in erster Linie an Vergiftungen durch Einatmung von Fluorverbindungen zu denken.
