Although a growing body of evidence demonstrates that altered mtDNA content (mtDNAc) has clinical implications in several types of solid tumours, its prognostic relevance in acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) patients remains largely unknown. Here, we show that patients with higher-than-normal mtDNAc had better outcomes regardless of tumour burden. These results were more evident in patients with low-risk of relapse. The multivariate Cox proportional hazard model demonstrated that high mtDNAc was independently associated with a decreased cumulative incidence of relapse. Altogether, our data highlights the possible role of mitochondrial metabolism in APL patients treated with ATRA. 相似文献
This study used a video prompting intervention to overcome language barriers between English-speaking trainers and Spanish-speaking immigrant parents of children with autism. Parents were taught instructional skills targeting independent dressing. A multiple baseline design across three families and a replication using an alternating treatments design with a fourth family were used to evaluate the effects of the intervention. All mothers reached mastery criterion and generalization of instructional skills was observed for three mothers, with treatment gains maintaining during follow-up. Improvement in independent dressing skills was observed for four children. Findings suggest that video prompting can be used to teach immigrant parents of children with autism who have limited English proficiency when there is a language mismatch between parents and trainers.
BackgroundUremic encephalopathy is defined as cerebral dysfunction due to toxin accumulation in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). This condition is characterized by subtle to florid symptoms, and its clinical course is always progressive when untreated but partially reversible with renal replacement therapy. While no test exists to measure subclinical uremic encephalopathy, two tests have been validated to measure minimal hepatic encephalopathy: the critical flicker frequency (CFF) test and the psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score (PHES).ObjectiveTo use CFF and PHES to measure the prevalence of cerebral dysfunction in individuals with CKD.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included a total of 69 patients with stage-5 CKD. Cutoff points for minimal encephalopathy were established using existing clinical guidelines: ≤39 Hz for CFF and < −4 for PHES. All participants were also screened for cognitive function and depression.ResultsEighteen cases (26.1%) of cerebral dysfunction linked to uremic encephalopathy were detected with CFF, while twelve (17.4%) were detected by PHES; only six cases (8.7%) were diagnosed by both methods. Half of the cases (50%) had diabetes, and 61% were on hemodialysis. Cognitive function scores did not differ significantly between those receiving dialysis, hemodialysis, or no renal replacement therapy.ConclusionsIt is essential to identify cerebral dysfunction when uremic encephalopathy is in early subclinical stages to reduce preventable events as traffic and work accidents. 相似文献
ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to examine the presence of small-area-level effects on children’s dental caries in Alberta, Canada, where dental public health programming is targeted in nature, based on an area-level measure of socio-economic circumstances.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included data on tooth decay (from an intra-oral examination conducted by dental hygienists at school) and socio-demographic and behavioural information (from a parent questionnaire) from 5677 grade 1 and 2 schoolchildren attending schools in public or Catholic school systems in Calgary and Edmonton in 2013/2014. Area-level socio-economic circumstances were quantified using the Pampalon Material Deprivation Index derived from census data, applied to the dissemination area (DA) of the child’s school. The outcome variable was presence (vs. absence) of tooth decay (cavitation). Data were analyzed using multilevel modeling with two levels: individual level (level 1) and school dissemination area (DA) (level 2).ResultsWe observed a small but statistically significant area-level effect on children’s caries experience, above and beyond individual-level characteristics.ConclusionStudy findings are relevant to dental public health programming in Alberta and other jurisdictions that use targeted strategies. Multilevel interventions, including universal approaches, are necessary to reduce inequities in children’s dental caries. 相似文献
This study aimed to investigate the influence of Outdoor Education (OE) on different areas of development in 1–3-year-old children attending Italian nursery schools. The sample was composed of 160 children (1–3-year-old) divided into a first group (Traditional), with 76 children attending nursery schools with traditional educational activities; and a second group (Outdoor) of 84 children following a continuous OE programme at school. In January (T1) and in June (T2), the quality of child development was assessed by teachers, appropriately trained, through Kuno Beller Developmental Scales. Comparing the two groups, the results showed that, in most of the developmental areas (cognitive, emotional, social, fine motor skills), significant improvements at T2 were detected for the Outdoor group compared to the Traditional group. The findings highlight that OE, compared to indoor activities, offers greater opportunities for the child development – playing, therefore, a crucial role as a protective developmental factor since early childhood. 相似文献
Leucocytospermia has been associated with loss of sperm function. Extracellular traps (ETs) of leucocytes are produced during innate immune response. ETs can be activated by spermatozoa in contact with polymorphonuclear (in vitro), inducing sperm entrapment and decrease motility. In this pilot study, we describe the results of ETosis ex vivo, in seminal fluid (SF) smear of infertile patients, associating ETs with leucocytospermia and bacteriospermia. In 21 infertile patients, semen parameters (WHO, 2010), microbiological study, leucocytospermia and presence of ETs in SF were determined. Leucocytes (CD45, CD15 and CD68) were evaluated by immunostaining in SF smears. Indirect immunofluorescence (global histone and H4‐citrullinated 3) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to determine ETs morphology. In 28.6% of patients presented leucocytospermia without bacteriospermia, all of them presented a large number of ETs in the SF smears examined. About 76.6% of the patients without leucocytospermia were positive for ETs. Samples with leucocytospermia have a higher number of ETs and would be related to the amount of leucocytes in the SF. The morphological predominant ETs were diffuse (diffETs) and spread (sprETs). The formation of ETs indicates leucocyte activation in semen, and it was observed that ETosis does not depend exclusively on the presence of bacterial contamination. 相似文献
Boar fertility is an important factor in farm production; it is therefore of interest to determine factors which reduce the fertilising capacity of semen samples stored at 17°C for use in intrauterine insemination. This work evaluated the effect of the number of rest days between each mounting of the boar, and the number of days that the semen was stored at 17°C, on sperm motility and semen concentration. We also analysed whether the boar's age influenced the sperm concentration. The results showed that only the total motility diminished as the storage time at 17°C increased (p < .05). A low negative correlation was observed between the variables’ rest days and total and progressive motility. The sperm concentration presented no relation with rest days or the boar's age. The boars’ rest days had no effect on motility and sperm concentration in the males studied, allowing them to be used with the frequencies described with no effect on these parameters. 相似文献
