A bacterium's ability to thrive in the presence of multiple environmental stressors simultaneously determines its resilience. We showed that activation of the SigB‐controlled general stress response by mild environmental or energy stress provided significant cross‐protection to subsequent lethal oxidative, disulfide and nitrosative stress in Bacillus subtilis. SigB activation is mediated via the stressosome and RsbP, the main conduits of environmental and energy stress, respectively. Cells exposed to mild environmental stress while lacking the major stressosome components RsbT or RsbRA were highly sensitive to subsequent oxidative stress, whereas rsbRB, rsbRC, rsbRD, and ytvA null mutants showed a spectrum of sensitivity, confirming their redundant roles and suggesting they could modulate the signals generated by environmental or oxidative stress. By contrast, cells encountering stationary phase stress required RsbP but not RsbT to survive subsequent oxidative stress. Interestingly, optimum cross‐protection against nitrosative stress caused by sodium nitropruside required SigB but not the known regulators, RsbT and RsbP, suggesting an additional and as yet uncharacterized route of SigB activation independent of the known regulators. Together, these results provide mechanistic information on how B. subtilis promotes enhanced resistance against lethal oxidative stress during mild environmental and energy stress conditions. 相似文献

An inadequate fit at the abutment/implant interface can generate mechanical and biological problems. The laboratorial stages could induce misfit in such interface when the castable UCLA abutment type is used. The purpose of this study was to comparatively evaluate the performance of three prosthetic laboratories (Labs A, B and C) by vertical fit analysis of castable UCLA abutments on the casting and soldering stages of the same prosthesis. Four fixed prostheses were built by each laboratory using castable UCLA abutments. The evaluation was made by scanning electron microscopy under 500x magnification in the mesial and distal regions of each element of the prosthesis, totalizing 24 measurements per laboratory. The results were analyzed statistically by Kruskal-Wallis test (p<0.05). In the casting process, the values presented by the laboratories differed significantly to each other (p=0.004). After soldering, the values presented by the laboratories showed no significant difference (p=0.948). It may be concluded that the fit values obtained in the casting stage of UCLA abutments can be influenced when processed by different laboratories, and that conventional soldering itself increased the degree of framework misfit, regardless of which laboratory made it. 相似文献

Objective
The aim of this study was to determine the salivary levels of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and cortisol and scores of depression, anxiety and stress in patients with oral lichen planus (OLP).Study design
Thirty-one patients with a diagnosis of OLP were selected; they were matched by sex and age with 31 control patients. Symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress were investigated by the instruments Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory and Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults, respectively. Saliva was collected in the morning and at night for the determination of DHEA and cortisol levels by radioimmunoassay.Results
There was no significant difference between the groups with respect to depression (P = 0.832), anxiety (P = 0.061) or stress (P = 0.611), or with respect to morning and night salivary levels of DHEA (P = 0.888, P = 0.297) and cortisol (P = 0.443, P = 0.983).Conclusions
The results suggest an association of OLP with anxiety. However, DHEA and cortisol levels did not differ between groups, which does not support any neuroendocrine aetiology for OLP. 相似文献17.

During orthodontic treatment, multinucleated clast cells carry out the resorption of mineralized tissues. Adhesion of clast cells to the mineralized tissues is mediated by transmembrane cell-surface glycoproteins called integrins, specifically by the alphavbeta3 integrin, which plays an important role in the process of bone resorption. The role of the alphavbeta3 integrin in bone resorption leading to osteoporosis has been demonstrated, but its role in alveolar bone and root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement is unknown. This study examined the expression of the alphavbeta3 integrin during experimental tooth movement. Tooth movement was achieved in 16 male Sprague-Dawley rats (each weighing 120-200 g) with elastic bands between their maxillary first and second molars. The molar-bearing segments were dissected and processed for histologic and immunohistochemical examination. The expression of alphavbeta3 integrin was examined with 2 primary antibodies: a polyclonal anti-alphav integrin subunit antibody and a polyclonal anti-beta3 integrin subunit antibody. Negative controls were similarly processed but without incubation with primary antibodies. The alphavbeta3 integrin was expressed both by osteoclasts associated with alveolar bone resorption and by odontoclasts associated with root resorption during experimental tooth movement. Furthermore, the beta3 integrin subunit was expressed by the epithelial rests of Malassez in the periodontal ligament. Negative controls did not show immunolabeling. The alphavbeta3 integrin adhesion receptor is expressed during experimental tooth movement and might be involved in the process of mineralized tissue resorption and the functions of the epithelial rests of Malassez. 相似文献

OBJECTIVES: The light absorption of dental photoinitiators should correlate with the spectral emission profiles of dental light curing units compared on an equivalent basis. Spectral data of dental photoinitiators and light curing units can be used to define the photon absorption efficiency (PAE) obtained by integrating the product of the absorption and emission spectra in terms of photons. This parameter can be used to identify the best performance for photochemical process with specific photoinitiators. METHODS: The efficiency of two LED and one QTH lamps were tested comparing their performances with the photoinitiators camphorquinone (CQ); phenylpropanedione (PPD); monoacylphosphine oxide (Lucirin TPO); and bisacylphosphine oxide (Irgacure 819). Absorption and emission spectra of the photoinitiators and the LED (Ultrablue I and Ultrablue IS) and QTH (Optilux 401) LCUs were determined in the 360-550nm range. RESULTS: CQ exhibited an absorption centered in the blue region and, although the maxima of PPD, MAPO, and BAPO were in the UV-A region, their absorption extended to the visible region. Power output maxima of the LCUs were at 467 (Ultrablue I), 454 (Ultrablue IS) and 493nm (Optilux 401), and the total power densities were 170+/-1, 470+/-4 and 444+/-4mW/cm(2), respectively. SIGNIFICANCE: The use of the PAE allows a prediction of the most efficient photoinitiator/LCU systems. For similar photoinitiator concentrations, Lucirin and CQ are most efficiently photoinitiated by the QTH unit, whereas the high-power LED device is more efficient for Irgacure. A technique for the restoration of carious primary maxillary incisors using indirect resin composite crowns and intracanal reinforcement fiber is described. Endodontic treatment was previously performed on each tooth. The advantages of using an intracanal reinforcement fiber include resin composite crown reinforcement, translucency, and relative manipulation facility. In addition, the use of indirect resin composite crowns provides good shape and esthetics, as well as reduced chair time for the child. The technique is illustrated in a case report in which indirect resin composite crowns and an intracanal reinforcement fiber are placed in a 3-year-old girl. 相似文献

The purpose of this retrospective study was to elucidate potential confounding factors affecting initial stability of miniscrews inserted to enhance orthodontic anchorage. Four hundred and seven miniscrews inserted in 168 patients treated by 17 orthodontic residents were analysed in a consecutive chart review. The outcome variable was the stability of the miniscrew, measured as a dichotomous variable, 0 if the miniscrew loosened during a 1 week period after insertion to the time of orthodontic force application and a value of 1 otherwise. Potential confounding variables examined were gender, age, jaw, insertion site, tissue type, length and diameter of the miniscrew, and number of previous insertions. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) methods were used to estimate the influence of each factor on stability for the correlated binary outcomes of each patient. A weighted analysis for the GEE approach was also performed for the convergence calculation of the estimation procedure due to a value of 0 in one of the cells. Crude odds ratio (cOR) and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and their 95 per cent confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for this purpose. The overall success rate after 1 week was 93.1 per cent (379/407). The screws inserted by more experienced clinicians (more than 20 miniscrews) were found to have approximately a 3.6-fold higher success rate of initial stability compared with those inserted by less experienced clinicians after adjusting for the insertion site (aOR = 3.63, P = 0.015).
