Animal‐assisted interventions (AAIs) have been found to decrease stress in some settings, but it is not known if AAI is feasible in an aeromedical staging facility or effective in reducing stress following aeromedical evacuation (AE) of military personnel. An experimental design was used to evaluate the efficacy of AAI at reducing stress in AE military patients (N = 120). Patients participated in a 20‐min AAI (n = 60) or 20‐min informational session about assistance dogs as an attention‐control group (n = 60). Demographics, post‐traumatic stress symptom severity (PTSSS), and stress biomarkers (cortisol, alpha‐amylase, and immunoglobulin A) were collected regular intervals. AAI was found feasible and efficacious at reducing stress. Cortisol decreased significantly (p < .05) in the AAI group compared with the attention‐control group. PTSSS moderated the immunoglobulin A responses to AAI as demonstrated by the interaction of PTSD Checklist–Military Version score, group, and time, F(1, 111.23) = 4.15 p = .044; effect size: d = 0.31. This research supports AAI as a stress‐reducing modality in AE patients, particularly those who report higher PTSSS. Implications for future research are discussed.  相似文献

Background   This trial was undertaken to assess the efficacy of a multimodality management regime used for the prevention of hypertrophic scars. It follows previous research and experience (A.D. Widgerow et al, Aesthetic Plast Surg, 24(3):227–234, 2000) with a similar program but with the addition of active agents with specific effects against prolonged inflammation and enhanced hydrative capacity. The modalities specifically targeted are tension on the scar, hydration of the scar, collagen maturation, and controlled inflammation. Methods   Tape was impregnated with a combination of agents providing an occlusive dressing aimed at combatting exaggerated scarring. Patients who had undergone surgery were stratified into four groups: Group 1, 60 patients/60 scars following simple skin excisions, 30 treated scars, 30 untreated scars; Group 2, 20 patients/40 scars, each patient with two excisions, one treated, one untreated; Group 3, 10 patients/20 scars following bilateral breast surgery, one side treated with tape alone, one side treated with tape and gel; Group 4, 30 patients with varying cosmetic procedures/50 scars, all treated and compared with historical outcomes for hypertrophic scarring. Thus, 170 scars were assessed in 120 patients. Results   Results were assessed at 1, 2, and 6 months using a combination of accepted scar assessment techniques. By amalgamating the Vancouver, Manchester, and morphologic table systems together with Patient and Observer Scar Assessment analyses, a comprehensive assessment of scar outcomes was undertaken and comparisons were made with control groups. Conclusion   Treated groups showed improvement outcomes in all variations of assessment. Patient and observer assessments correlated well, and morphologic appearances of the scars following the final assessment at 6 months showed statistically significant positive scar outcomes in the treatment groups. We investigated the effect of Cd and Pb on the growth of the aquatic macrophyte Typha latifolia; the removal from the solution and the accumulation of these elements by the plant were also studied. Thus, small plants of T. latifolia, collected from a noncontaminated site, were exposed for 10 days to Cd and Pb, in a single solution or in mixture solutions, at two concentrations of the metals (5 and 7.5 mg/L). Our results showed that T. latifolia removed effectively Cd and Pb from solutions and was able to accumulate these metals in the roots and, to a lesser extent, in the leaves. Our findings suggested a synergistic effect of Cd and Pb with respect to the toxicity to T. latifolia. Additionally, Cd diminished the Pb absorption by T. latifolia. Our results confirmed, using scanning electron microscopy, the internalization of Cd and Pb in T. latifolia.  相似文献

An in vitro system is described and validated for studying transport of solutes and water in both uninfected and rotavirus-infected neonatal mouse intestine. Control intestine exhibited stable water absorption for periods of up to 40 min. Water absorption was temperature-dependent. Na-dependent, and enhanced by glucose-containing perfusion solutions. Theophylline induced net secretion of water by control intestinal tissue. Water transport by rotavirus-infected lower small intestine was significantly depressed as compared to control levels, and rotavirus-infected middle small intestine exhibited net secretion of water. Upper small intestine and colon from infected animals did not differ significantly from control tissues in their ability to transport water. Water secretion by infected middle small intestine was reversed to absorption by glucose-containing solutions.  相似文献

PURPOSE: Eccentric photorefraction provides an opportunity to gather rapid and remote estimates of refraction and gaze position from infants. The technique has the potential for extensive use in vision screenings and studies of visual development. The goal of this study was to assess the refraction calibration of the PowerRefractor (Multichannel Systems) for use with uncyclopleged infants. METHODS: The defocus measurements from the instrument were compared with the results of simultaneous retinoscopy in one analysis and with known amounts of defocus induced with trial lenses in another. Data were collected from infants 1 to 6 months of age and adults. RESULTS: The PowerRefractor typically read < 1 D of myopia when the retinoscopy reflex was judged to be neutral at the same working distance in both infants and adults. The slopes of both infant and adult validation functions (trial lens power vs. measurement of induced defocus) were close to 1 over a 4D range. The infant slopes were significantly greater than those of the adults, however. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the instrument is capable of detecting large amounts of defocus but needs individual calibration for detailed studies of accommodative accuracy and absolute levels of defocus, as has been recommended previously for adult subjects.  相似文献
