Hypofibrinogenemia-dysfibrinogenemia and von Willebrand's disease in the same family.

Two Puerto Rican families were studied. One family included a number of members with dysfibrinogenemia occasionally associated with hypofibrinogenemia. The second family had members with von Willebrand's disease. The two diseases merged in the proband's immediate family; the affected members of this family exhibited a mild bleeding disorder. Others in the two families had no obvious bleeding tendency.     

Extracranial cribside sonography in infants

In 29 real-time ultrasonic studies of infants in the intensive care nursery, the technique either accurately diagnosed or led directly to the correct diagnosis in 27 (93%). Twenty-four of these infants had suspected abnormality in the abdomen or pelvis, three had congestive heart failure and bruits, one had respiratory distress and an opacified hemithorax on chest roentgenogram, and one was a child with ambiguous genitalia in whom sonography identified a uterus. We suggest that portable, real-time ultrasonography is an ideal modality with which to study seriously ill infants whose medical condition precludes transport to the radiology department.     

Effect of the somatostatin analogue octreotide acetate on hemostasis in humans.

Octreotide acetate is a somatostatin analogue that has been shown to ameliorate the side effects of excessive secretion of hormone from benign and malignant tumors. The ability of this drug to inhibit the growth of malignant cells and to control gastrointestinal hemorrhage will prompt additional clinical trials. Because some of these patients may have thrombocytopenia, platelet dysfunction, or a coagulopathy, we studied tests of platelet function and blood coagulation in 15 patients before and after 14 days of therapy with octreotide acetate at a dosage of 500 micrograms three times daily. We found no substantial change in the results of these tests, and no patient experienced bleeding or thrombosis. These results suggest that octreotide acetate does not adversely affect platelet function or the coagulation system in humans.     

Relational Aggression, Gender, and the Developmental Process

TOPIC: Defining and exploring the concept of relational aggression, or the purposeful intent to inflict harm on another through a social relationship. PURPOSE: This study aims to describe the concept of relational aggression as it has been shaped through recent research, to contrast relational aggression with other types of aggression, and to explore the influence of gender and the formation of a self-concept in the development of relational aggression. SOURCES: A review of the literature from 1969 to 2005 from selected nursing, child development, women's studies, and psychology publications. CONCLUSIONS: Some degree of relational aggression seems to be a normal response to conflict for many girls, from preschool through adolescence; however, more research needs to be conducted to determine at what level, or what subtypes, of relational aggression are predictive of future deviant behavior.     

Texture patterns in pancreatic sonograms

In a retrospective study of 163 pancreatic sonograms, five internal echo patterns were correlated with the ultimate clinical diagnoses. Attention to the internal echo patterns of the pancreas can provide useful information in diagnosing pancreatic disease, including identification of abnormalities in glands of normal size and contour.     

The effect of Trichomonas vaginalis and the role of pH on cell culture monolayer viability.

In vitro, Trichomonas vaginalis produces contact-dependent cytotoxicity in which the monolayers are disrupted and monolayer cells die. In contrast, when cell-free filtrates of T. vaginalis culture supernatants are applied to a monolayer, detachment occurs but cell viability is maintained. Growth of T. vaginalis in culture results in a dramatic fall in pH. Both in systems where T. vaginalis grew in physical contact with McCoy cells and where they were physically separate, monolayers still disrupted; but the rate of death of McCoy cells significantly decreased when pH was rigidly controlled. This would indicate that cell death attributed to contact-dependent cytotoxicity is in part due to the drop in pH when T. vaginalis is grown in vitro.
