Rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis occurring together.

Rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis are often difficult to differentiate, though it is important to do so as the natural history and treatment of the two conditions differ. Nine patients have recently been seen, each of whom fulfilled the criteria for both rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. In eight of the nine patients the histocompatibility antigen HLA-27 was present. A possible explanation of these cases is that one of the diseases occurred by chance in patients already suffering from the other, but this is extremely unlikely. If a chance association is not the correct explanation the basic concepts defining rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis must be reconsidered.     

Antrafenine, naproxen and placebo in osteoarthritis: a comparative study

Antrafenine is a new non-narcotic analgesic. In a double-blind, cross-over study the efficacy of antrafenine at doses of 450 mg/day and 900 mg/day was compared to naproxen 750 mg/day and placebo in patients with osteoarthritis. Each drug treatment was given for two weeks, the total duration of the study being eight consecutive weeks. Antrafenine, at either dose, was effective in relieving pain associated with osteoarthritis; the efficacy was comparable to naproxen. There was no definite indication that 900 mg/day was more effective than 450 mg/day. Antrafenine, at both dosage levels, was well tolerated. Any noted side-effects were mild. There was a total of 12 side-effects in nine patients with the high dose, five side-effects in five patients with the low dose, compared with 11 side-effects in nine patients with naproxen and 10 side-effects in seven patients with placebo.     

Chemical and crystallographic microanalysis of fine particles in the urban atmosphere

Dust particles were collected from the urban atmospheres of Paris and Lyon. The microparticles occurring the most often (pollution background) were studied with X-ray micro-analysis coupled with electron microdiffraction. The relative occurrence of each inorganic species was determined on 500 particles in our data.     

The advantages of delayed imaging and radiographic correlation in scintigraphic localization of gastrointestinal bleeding

Two cases in which gastrointestinal bleeding was localized by serial scintigraphic imaging with red blood cells labeled in vivo with 99mTc-PYP are reported. The importance of both early serial imaging and delayed imaging and of the correlation with other radiographic techniques is demonstrated. Reflux of blood from the sigmoid into the proximal colon was observed in both cases. In one case, contrast material injected into a resected specimen confirmed the scintigraphic localization of the site of bleeding.     

Epilepsy and coeliac disease

A number of neurological disorders have been described in association with coeliac disease, including epilepsy. A review of 177 patients with coeliac disease failed to show an increased prevalence of epilepsy. This is contrary to the findings of other workers, and requires further investigation.     

A Laboratory evaluation of test apparatus and techniques for investigating spray deposit and drift in crack and crevice treatments

Conclusion A crack's width and depth have very little effect on the amount of insecticide deposited on the outside of the crack. Factors such as rate of application, concentration of insecticide, tank pressure and air turbulence would have a more direct effect on the amount of deposit. While other factors such as humidity and temperature were not considered in this study, other researchers have shown their importance in spray deposition.The amount of insecticide deposited along the interior of a crack is strongly influenced by the width of the crack. The wider the crack opening, the more insecticide deposited.Data collected using the test apparatus has shown that the apparatus is able to provide a great deal of information about the factors influencing the amount of insecticide in crack and crevice treatments. The apparatus and techniques utilized during this study have proved to be accurate and sensitive to changes in crack width and depths. This method also gives valuable information as to the efficiency of the application equipment that was used in this study.The next step is to test the apparatus using pressures.
