Intravitreal bevacizumab for adult-onset vitelliform dystrophy: a case report

PURPOSE: Adult-onset foveomacular vitelliform dystrophy (AFVD) is often misdiagnosed as occult choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The authors report the anatomic and functional outcome of intravitreal bevacizumab in a case of AFVD associated with a suspected occult CNV. METHODS: Prospective, interventional, single case report. One female patient with decreased visual acuity (VA) and metamorphopsia secondary to AFVD received one single intravitreal injection of bevacizumab 1.25 mg. RESULTS: The patient reported unchanged VA and decreased metamorphopsia 6 weeks after the injection. Fluorescein angiography (FA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed progressive decrease of subretinal fluid until complete disappearance. VA, OCT, and FA remained unchanged during 10 months follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Intravitreal bevacizumab showed a morphologic improvement and stable VA in a patient with AFVD. Further case series are required to confirm this observation.     

Rehabilitation of patients with coronary cardiopathy. Early mobilization after acute myocardial infarction

The early mobilization of selected patients with uncomplicated myocardial infarction is not any longer a controversial subject. The benefits are the prevention of decreasing physical capacity and other complications due to physical immobilization. Anxiety and depressive states are prevented or improved, physical capacity is maintained; there is a well being sensation upon discharge and there are economical advantages due to shortening of the hospitalization period. The latter favors an early return to work and a rapid turnover of hospital beds. From different points of view, early discharge of these patients is desirable, safe, possible, decreases expenses, and favors recovery.

Joint action as a practice of memory transmission in a poor urban neighborhood of Santiago,Chile

In Latin America, one of the key tasks of Community and Liberation Psychology has been to recover the memories of marginalized and excluded communities that have experienced multiple pasts marked by political violence. In Chile, researchers have focused on poor urban neighborhoods, where the question of how memories are transmitted in areas where conflicts and violence are still present has been overlooked. In this context, the following article aims to analyze the ways in which memories are transmitted in a neighborhood that has a long organizational history in the struggle against social inequalities; while at the same time being classified as a critical area by the state due to its current levels of violence and social conflict. The researchers led a 3‐year case study from an ethnographic perspective, and applied a collaborative methodology that brought together the research team and the members of a territorial organization. The analysis is based on 72 interviews, 5 conversation groups and ethnographic observation. The data was analyzed using discourse analysis. The results revealed that the main form of memory transmission is not based on intergenerational narratives of the past, but rather on joint action; namely, dialogical practices among neighborhood residents that generate an ethos; a common way of life.
