Identification of malaria hot spots for focused intervention in tribal state of India: a GIS based approach

Background  

In India, presently malaria shows a declining trend whereas Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) cases show an up trend. In central India, specifically, Madhya Pradesh (M.P.) a forested and tribal area, control of malaria is logistically difficult and outbreaks are frequently recorded, reasons for this being inadequate surveillance, poor reporting, a time lag in reporting to decision makers and a lack of geo referenced information to pin point the trouble spots for a timely preventive action.

Dimensions of nurse and patient roles in labor

Nurses, as the principal caregivers during labor, play a major role in structuring the social context of childbirth. The influence of nurse‐patient verbal interaction on the social construction of the childbirth experience was investigated. Verbatim records of nurse‐patient interaction during labor were analyzed using Stiles's (1978a) Taxonomy of Verbal Response Modes. Nurse and patient scores on three dimensions of interpersonal roles, attentiveness, acquiescence, and presumptuousness, were determined. The results indicated that nurses established and maintained control over the definition of the childbirth experience. The viewpoint of the laboring woman was seldom acknowledged as relevant. Presumption of knowledge of the laboring woman's experience and failure to determine her perception of the situation can have a negative impact on individualization of care and the creation of a patient‐centered birthing environment.     

Measuring the effect of patient comfort rounds on practice environment and patient satisfaction: A pilot study

Hourly rounding in the acute hospital setting has been proposed as an intervention to increase patient satisfaction and safety, and improve the nursing practice environment, but the innovation has not been adequately tested. A quasi-experimental pretest post-test non-randomized parallel group trial design was used to test the effect of hourly patient comfort rounds on patient satisfaction and nursing perceptions of the practice environment, and to evaluate research processes and instruments for a proposed larger study. A Patient Satisfaction Survey instrument was developed and used in conjunction with the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index. Results on patient satisfaction showed no significant changes. Significant changes were found for three of the five practice environment subscales. Consistent with the aim of a pilot study, this research has provided important information related to design, instruments and process that will inform a larger sufficiently powered study.     

Project 2000 students' perceptions of their training

This paper reports on the findings of a study conducted into the perceptions of final year Project 2000 pre-registration students towards their pre-registration education programme The aim of the research was to discover how students perceive their training in terms of value, relevance, intellectual potency, teaching methods and organization Data were collected using the Hoste scale which has been developed for the evaluation of educational courses A convenience sample of students (n = 131) within one college of nursing were invited to participate Findings include a particularly high level of satisfaction with Project 2000 in terms of value, breadth and relevance Organization and liveliness of the course were perceived much less satisfactorily There was a trend for a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of the theoretical and practical components of the course The findings are discussed with particular reference to the perceptions of theory and practice within the educational programme     

Lack of association between the chemokine receptor 5 polymorphism CCR5delta32 in rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Background  

The chemokine receptor CCR5 has been detected at elevated levels on synovial T cells, and a 32 bp deletion in the CCR5 gene leads to a non-functional receptor. A negative association between the CCR5Δ32 and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been reported, although with conflicting results. In juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), an association with CCR5 was recently reported. The purpose of this study was to investigate if the CCR5Δ32 polymorphism is associated with RA or JIA in Norwegian cohorts.
