BackgroundMalaria is one of the most severe public health problems worldwide with 300 to 500 million cases and about one million deaths reported to date of which 90% were from world health organization (WHO) Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) countries. The purpose of this study was to explore the spatial distribution of malaria parasite prevalence (MPP) among districts of Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Regional State (SNNRS) in Ethiopia by using 2011 malaria indicator survey (MIS) data collected for 76 districts and to model its relationship with different covariates.MethodExploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) was conducted followed by implementation of spatial lag model (SLM) and spatial error model (SEM) in GeoDa software. Queen contiguity second order type of spatial weight matrix was applied in order to formalize spatial interaction among districts.ResultsFrom ESDA, we found positive spatial autocorrelation in malaria prevalence rate. Hot spot areas for MPP were found in the eastern and southeast parts of the region. Relying on specification diagnostics and measures of fit, SLM was found to be the best model for explaining the geographical variation of MPP. SLM analysis demonstrated that proportion of households living in earth/local dung plastered floor house, proportion of households living under thatched roof house, average number of rooms/person in a given district, proportion of households who used anti-malaria spray in the last 12 months before the survey, percentage household using mosquito nets and average number of mosquito nets/person in a given district have positive and statistically significant effect on spatial distribution of MPP across districts of SNNPRS. Percentage of households living without access to radio and television has negative and statistically significant effect on spatial distribution of MPP across districts of MPP.ConclusionMalaria is spatially clustered in space. The implication of the spatial clustering is that, in cases where the decisions on how to allocate funds for interventions needs to have spatial dimension.  相似文献

Whether current child feeding practices and behaviours among rural households in Sidama, Southern Ethiopia conform to the World Health Organization (WHO) guiding principles for complementary feeding is uncertain. We assessed socio-demographic status, anthropometry, breastfeeding, complementary feeding practices and behaviours, and motor development milestones in a convenience sample of 97 breastfed children aged 6–23 months from three rural Sidama communities. Energy and nutrient intakes from complementary foods were also calculated from 1-day in-home weighed records. Prevalence of stunting ranged from 25% for infants aged 6–8 months to 52% for children aged 12–23 months, whereas for wasting, the corresponding prevalence was 10% and 14%, respectively. Very few children were exclusively breastfed up to 6 months of age ( n  = 2), or received solids/semi-solids for the recommended minimum number of times containing the recommended number of food groups. Responsive feeding was not practised and no cellular animal products were consumed. Median intakes of energy, and intakes and densities of micronutrients from complementary foods (but not protein) were below WHO recommendations, assuming average breast milk intakes; greatest shortfalls were for retinol, vitamin C and calcium densities. Mothers of stunted children were shorter and lighter, and from households of lower socio-economic status than non-stunted children ( P  < 0.05). Acquisition of some motor development milestones was delayed in stunted infants compared with their non-stunted counter-parts. In conclusion, interventions that address the WHO guiding principles for complementary feeding practices and behaviours, as well as prenatal influences on growth, are urgently required in this setting.  相似文献

Owing to their intrinsic properties, such as deformability, high electrical conductivity, and superior electrochemical performance, room-temperature liquid metals and liquid metal alloys have attracted the attention of researchers for a wide variety of applications, including portable and large-scale energy storage applications. In this study, novel gallium-indium-tin eutectic (EGaInSn) room-temperature liquid metal nanoparticles synthesized using a facile and scalable probe-ultrasonication method were used as anode material in lithium-ion batteries. The morphology, geometry, and self-healing properties of the synthesized room-temperature liquid metal nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS and TEM/EDS). The synthesized room-temperature liquid metal nanoparticles delivered a specific capacity of 474 mAh g–1 and retained 77% of the stable reversible capacity after 500 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles at a constant current density of 0.1 A g–1. The high theoretical specific capacity, combined with its self-healing and fluidic features, make EGaInSn room-temperature liquid metal nanoparticles a potential anode material for large-scale energy storage applications.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: In a phase I study of angiotensin-(1--7) [Ang-(1--7)], clinical benefit was associated with reduction in plasma placental growth factor (PlGF) concentrations. The current study examines Ang-(1--7) induced changes in biomarkers according to cancer type and investigates mechanisms of action engaged in vitro. METHODS: Plasma biomarkers were measured prior to Ang-(1--7) administration as well as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 hours after treatment. Tests for interaction were performed to determine the impact of cancer type on angiogenic hormone levels. If a positive interaction was detected, treatment-induced biomarker changes for individual cancer types were assessed. To investigate mechanisms of action, in vitro growth assays were performed using a murine endothelioma cell line (EOMA). PCR arrays were performed to identify and statistically validate genes that were altered by Ang-(1--7) treatment in these cells. RESULTS: Tests for interaction controlled for dose cohort and clinical response indicated a significant impact of cancer type on post-treatment VEGF and PlGF levels. Following treatment, PlGF levels decreased over time in patients with sarcoma (P = .007). Treatment of EOMA cells with increasing doses of Ang-(1--7) led to significant growth suppression at doses as low as 100 nM. PCR arrays identified 18 genes that appeared to have altered expression after Ang-(1--7) treatment. Replicate analyses confirmed significant changes in 8 genes including reduction in PlGF (P = .04) and hypoxia inducible factor 1alpha (HIF-1alpha) expression (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: Ang-(1--7) has clinical and pre-clinical activity for vascular sarcomas that is linked to reduced HIF-1alpha and PlGF expression.  相似文献

Background We designed a phase II trial to examine the benefit of preoperative hyperfractionated radiation therapy (XRT) and concurrent chemotherapy for patients with locally advanced esophageal cancer (LAEC). Aim of Study The pathologic complete response (pCR) was the primary endpoint to estimate efficacy. Methods Twenty-three patients with LAEC received twice-daily XRT during wk 1 and 5 once-daily XRT during wk 2–4 (59 Gy). Cisplatin (100 mg/m2) was given on d 1, while 5-fluorouracil (1000 mg/m2) was given by continuus infusion the first and fifth weeks of the XRT. Results The pCR for the 19 patients undergoing esophagectomy was 16%. The study was closed at the interim analysis having not met the required minimum pCR rate of 20%. Hematologic toxicities consisted of grades III and IV neutropenia observed in 33% and 14% of patients, respectively. Grade III nausea and vomiting was seen in 38% of patients. One grade V pulmonary toxicity occurred. The median survival was 44.6 mo with 65% of patients alive at 2 yr. Conclusions The pCR rate in this trial did not meet the predetermined statistical minimum. With the encouraging 2-yr survival, it is not clear that pCR is a reliable surrogate endpoint to discern treatment efficacy.  相似文献

From 1995 to 2001, five rounds of sentinel surveillance were carried out for young women attending antenatal care clinics at four health centers in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, to monitor trends in the prevalence of HIV infection and syphilis. Serum samples were tested for antibodies to HIV (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blotting) and antibodies to Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum hemagglutination assay and rapid plasma reagin test). Prevalence ratios for an increase in one calendar year were estimated using log-binomial models. Between 1995 and 2001, the prevalence of HIV infection among young women (age range, 15-24 years) attending antenatal care clinics in inner city health centers declined from 24.2% to 15.1% (prevalence ratio for an increase in one calendar year, 0.91; 95% confidence interval, 0.87-0.95). No change was observed for older age groups or in outer city health centers. The decline in the prevalence of active syphilis (T. pallidum hemagglutination assay and rapid plasma reagin testing positive for antibodies to T. pallidum) was more pronounced among and also restricted to the young age groups (age range, 15-24 years) in the inner city (from 7.6% in 1995 to 1.3% in 2001; prevalence ratio, 0.69; 95% confidence interval, 0.59-0.80). The declining trends in the prevalence of HIV infection and syphilis among young women attending antenatal care clinics in the inner city are encouraging, but these findings require confirmation in future years and for other population groups.  相似文献

Between 1997 and 2001, 1624 Ethiopian factory workers were enrolled in prospective HIV-1 cohorts in Ethiopia, at Akaki and Wonji towns. HIV-1 seroprevalence at intake was 11.8% (Akaki) and 7.1% (Wonji). HIV-1 incidence was .75 per 100 person-years (Akaki) and .35 per 100 person-years (Wonji). During follow up, CD4 T-cell counts remained significantly lower and CD8 T-cell counts significantly higher in Ethiopian seroconverters compared with Dutch seroconverters. Viral loads were lower in Ethiopian seroconverters versus Dutch seroconverters in the first months after seroconversion, subsequently increasing to similar levels. All 20 Ethiopian seroconverters were infected with HIV-1 subtype C (15 with sub-cluster C' and 5 with sub-cluster C). Viral loads were higher in sub-cluster C'-infected Ethiopian seroconverters. One subject demonstrated a window period of at least 204 days, combined with a high preseroconversion viral load and no decline of CD4 T cells over a follow-up period of at least 3 years.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of malaria helminth co-infections and their contribution for aneamia in febrile patients attending Azzezo health center, Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia.MethodsA cross section study was conducted among febrile patients attending Azezo health center from February-March 30, 2011. Convenient sampling technique was used to select 384 individuals. Both capillary blood and stool were collected. Giemsa stained thick and thin blood film were prepared for identification of Plasmodium species and stool sample was examined by direct wet mount and formalin-ether concentration technique for detection of intestinal helminthes parasites. Haemoglobin concentration was determined using a portable haemoglobin spectrophotometer, Hemocue Hb 201 analyzer.ResultsOut of 384 febrile patients examined for malaria parasites, 44 (11.5%) individuals were positive for malaria parasites, of which Plasmodium vivax accounted for 75.0% (33), Plasmodium falciparum for 20.5% (9) infectious, whereas two person (4.5%) had mixed species infection. Prevalence of malaria was higher in males (28) when compared with prevalence in females (16). More than half (207, 53.9%) of study participants had one or more infection. Prevalence was slightly higher in females (109, 52.7%) than in males (98, 47.3%). About helminths, Ascaris lumbricoides was the predominant isolate (62.1%) followed by hookworms (18.4%). Only 22 participants were co-infected with malaria parasite and helminths and co-infection with Ascaris lumbricoides was predominant (45.0%). The prevalence of anemia was 10.9% and co-infection with Plasmodium and helminth parasites was significantly associated with (P< 0.000 1) higher aneamia prevalence compared to individuals without any infection.ConclusionsPrevalence of malaria and soil transmitted helminths is high and the disease is still major health problem in the study area. Hence, simultaneous combat against the two parasitic infections is very crucial to improve health of the affected communities in economically developing countries.  相似文献

African horse sickness (AHS) is associated with high morbidity and mortality in equids, especially horses. A retrospective analysis was carried out concerning 737 AHS outbreaks that occurred during 2007–2010 in Ethiopia. A total of ten outbreaks were investigated in the study period. All four forms of the disease (pulmonary, cardiac, horse sickness fever and the combined form) were observed, with the cardiac form being the most prevalent. Multiple African horse sickness virus serotypes (AHSV‐2, AHSV‐4, AHSV‐6, AHSV‐8 and AHSV‐9) were detected by molecular methods (type‐specific real‐time RT‐PCR assays), and fourteen isolates were derived from blood and tissue samples collected during 2009–2010. This is the first report of AHSV‐4, AHSV‐6 or AHSV‐8 in Ethiopia.  相似文献
