A bicistronic DNA vaccine against rabies and parvovirus infection of dogs was developed by subcloning rabies glycoprotein and canine parvovirus (CPV) VP2 genes into a bicistronic vector. After characterizing the expression of both the proteins in vitro, the bicistronic DNA vaccine was injected in mice and induced immune response was compared with monocistronic DNA vaccines. There was no significant difference in ELISA and virus neutralizing (VN) antibody responses against rabies and CPV in mice immunized with either bicistronic or monocistronic DNA vaccine. Further, there was significantly similar protection in mice immunized with either bicistronic or monocistronic rabies DNA vaccine on rabies virus challenge. Similarly, dogs immunized with monocistronic and bicistronic DNA vaccines developed comparable VN antibodies against rabies and CPV. This study indicated that bicistronic DNA vaccine can be used in dogs to induce virus neutralizing immune responses against both rabies and CPV. 相似文献

The Garhwal Himalayas are a part of a unique ecosystem, with sharp agro-climatic variations within a very small geographical area (53,485 km2). The varied agro-climatic situations result in different cropping systems and socio-economic lifestyles that could likely affect the nutritional status of the people living in this region. This article will attempt to explore the impact of these variables (namely, age, family size, education, income, calorie and protein intake, land holding, number of animals, and wheat production) on the body mass index (BMI) of the population residing in the Garhwal Hills. A total of 1,030 subjects were studied from the three agro-climatic zones (406 from the high hills, 292 from the mid hills, and 332 from the low hills). It has been found that the people living in the high hills are the most undernourished, as the lowest percentage of people (52.6 per cent) with an acceptable BMI and the highest percentage of people in the severely malnourished category (11.1 per cent) are found here. People living in urban areas have a better nutritional status. Correlation studies show that the nutritional status of the population improves with age, literacy levels, and small family size. In some cases, calorie and protein intake have a positive impact on the health of the people, whereas size of land holding, number of animals, and income of the family do not have any significant influence on nutritional status. 相似文献
AIM: To study the in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of Tabernaemontana divaricata leaf extract on male albino mice. METHODS: Aqueous decoction and methanol leaf extracts were tested for their ability to reduce croton oil-induced edema in the mouse ear after topical application. The methanol leaf extract dose-dependently inhibited the croton oil-induced ear edema in mice (ID50 〈500 μg.cm-2). A bioassay-guided liquid-liquid fractionation of this methanol extract gave four active fractions: water insoluble (F1), hexane (F2), ethyl acetate (F3) and water (F4). RESULTS: The hexane fraction showed a very high activity (42.1% inhibition at 0.7 μg.cm-2) as compared to the control. The other fractions were less active (FI: 56.1% at 506.2 μg.cm-2; F3: 57.3% at 289.3 lag.cm-2; and F4: 31.9% for 203.8 μg.cm-2) while indomethacin gave 48.8% of inhibition at 90 μg-cm-2. The activity of F1 and F3 may be at least in part explained by the presence of anti-inflammatory flavonoids, while the activity was not correlated to the tannin contents. No compounds were detected in the most active F2 fraction. CONCLUSIONS: The results give a rational support to the traditional use of T. divaricata in tropical India as anti-inflammatory agent. 相似文献
Herbal medicines are readily available and commonly perceived to be relatively harmless. Butcher's Broom is used in various medicinal preparations and contains substances having α-adrenergic−stimulating properties.
Objective
Our aim was to report a case of toxicity associated with Butcher's Broom in a diabetic patient.
Case Report
A 39-year-old woman developed diabetic ketoacidosis 5 days after beginning therapy with Butcher's Broom for mild ankle swelling. Her diabetic ketoacidosis was complicated by hyperkalemia and acidosis with a pH of 7.02. After management with intravenous fluid, insulin, and calcium gluconate, her condition stabilized and she was discharged several days later.
Conclusions
This case represents a small but potentially serious public health concern in a diabetic woman taking Butcher's Broom. 相似文献
Unconventional sites are being used for pacing in patients with inaccessible right ventricle like single ventricle, atresia of tricuspid valve and in anomalous venous drainage. Here we report a case in which the right ventricle could not be accessed due to the metallic prosthesis. A 41-year-old lady required triple valve replacement for rheumatic involvement. Permanent pacemaker implantation was done with epicardial lead for bradycardia post operatively. Pulse generator change was needed within 3 years as the pacemaker reached end of life due to high lead threshold. Subsequent pacemaker implantation was done with a left ventricular lead in coronary sinus by percutaneous approach. One year after implantation, the threshold remains stable. Coronary sinus can be utilized for permanent pacing in patients with inaccessible right ventricle due to prosthetic tricuspid valve. 相似文献
With the advent of improved diagnostic and imaging techniques, it is now possible to detect renal cancers in their very early
stages, when they are still present as small renal masses. In these situations, use of laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN)
techniques are indicated and have gained acceptance in major medical institutions worldwide, offering comparable oncological
outcomes and improving quality of life in the patient when contrasted with open nephrectomy procedures. However, a complication
that may occur during or after this surgery is the possibility of compromising renal function, as a result of extended ischemia
times of more than 30 min. We have undertaken a systematic study of the potential of several agents that may enhance renal
parenchymal preservation without causing unwanted renal dysfunction as a result of enhanced ischemia times. In this study,
we have evaluated the potential of one such agent under study, namely hydralazine, which was shown earlier to enhance hypoxia
inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) levels in experimental animal systems. Our aim was to determine whether enhanced levels of HIF-1α
via pre-treatment with hydralazine had a reno-protective effect after ischemic injury. 相似文献
