The relationship of the extrinsic blood supply to regeneration in graft reconstructed peripheral nerves

Median nerves of rats were reconstructed with conventional or vascular nerve grafts. After 2, 3 and 4 weeks, Allen Video-Enhanced Contrast, Differential Interference Contrast (AVEC-DIC) microscopy revealed axonal transport in most preparations, with varying degrees of myelination. Radio-isotope tracer was measured in the nerve. Two and 4 week measurements revealed no difference between the graft types. At 3 weeks the vascular graft group exhibited transport along the entire length of the nerve in contrast to a relatively abbreviated path length in the conventional graft group. Nerve conduction velocities (NCV) were measured proximal to, within and distal to the grafts. Three week NCV showed no difference between the graft types. The 4 week NCV revealed normal values in the vascular graft group at points distal to and within the graft. Significant slowing was seen in the conventional grafts at both points.     

Surgical morbidity and mortality in one hundred and twenty-nine patients with obstructive jaundice

One hundred and twenty-nine jaundiced patients were operated upon for the relief of benign and malignant bile duct obstruction during a 10-year period, 1977-86. The overall mortality was 4.7 per cent but increased to 9.1 per cent in patients with a serum bilirubin greater than 300 mumol/l. In all, 46.5 per cent of patients had a rise in postoperative creatinine but renal dysfunction occurred in only 4.7 per cent. Wound infection developed in 3.1 per cent of patients and appeared unrelated to infected bile; 3.9 per cent of patients were treated for postoperative septicaemic episodes. The low morbidity and mortality observed suggests that preoperative biliary drainage need not be considered in routine surgical practice if simple measures to maintain urine flow and prevent postoperative sepsis are used.     

Serum beta 2-microglobulin after five-day administration of cisplatin

Patients with testicular tumors receiving the Einhorn combination chemotherapy with cisplatinum administration for five consecutive days were evaluated for signs of glomerular filtration rate impairment by means of serum beta 2-microglobulin measurements before and on days 2 and 5 after cessation of cisplatin administration and then before repeated cycles of the same chemotherapeutic regimen. Though no significant changes in the level of serum beta 2-microglobulin could be found, an evident increase in the values was seen indicating that in more aggressive cisplatin administration schedules not only tubular impairment might contribute to possible nephrotoxic effects.     

Quinone oxidoreductase gene polymorphism and genetic susceptibility to nasopharyngeal carcinoma]

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain whether the point mutation of cDNA609 C to T of quinone oxidoreductase (NQO1) gene is associated with the genetic susceptibility to nasopharyngeal carcinoma. METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was employed to assess the polymorphism of NQO1 genes both in 120 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and 120 healthy subjects matched for age, gender and origin. RESULTS: The allelic frequency of mutant T allele of NQO1 gene was significantly higher in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma than in the healthy subjects (P<0.05), and the individuals with T allelic genotype of NQO1 gene were at greater risk to develop nasopharyngeal carcinoma. CONCLUSION: The cDNA 609 T allele of NQO1 gene is very likely to be associated with the genetic susceptibility to nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Clinical pathologic study on effect of Qianggan capsule in treating patients of chronic hepatitis B with liver cirrhosis

To explore the clinical therapeutic effect of Qianggan Capsule (QGC) in treating chronic hepatitis B with liver fibrosis from the pathological aspect.

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of pseudocoronary syndromes in persons undergoing cardiac diagnostic tests because of suspected ischaemic heart disease. The study involved 384 subjects, 114 women and 270 men aged 21–75 years, who had been referred for precise cardiac diagnosis with a tentative preliminary diagnosis of ischaemic heart disease. In each subject an exercise stress test was performed, as was an ECG both at rest and during exercise and a coronary angiogram. Subjective sensations (e.g. pain in the chest, dyspnoea) experienced during the tests were also taken into account. Of the 384 patients suffering from pain in the chest area, ischaemic heart disease was excluded in 180 cases. In this subgroup the target HR (submaximal HR) was achieved during the stress test without any significant alterations in the ECG trace (raising or lowering of the ST segment). The subsequent coronary angiography definitively excluded any cardiogenic origin of the pain in the chest.
