Regulation of autoimmunity.

Despite the prevalence of self-reactive T cells, the healthy organism is not in a state of all-out war. Potent regulatory mechanisms exist at every level to permit the successful integration of the various aspects of the immune system, allowing only minor skirmishes, which ordinarily can be neutralized.     

Cephalosporins: recent developments

Cephalosporin antibiotics have attained a significant role in managing bacterial diseases. The author discusses the second- and third-generation cephalosporins in this review.     

Pan natural killer cell monoclonal antibodies and their relationship to the NK1.1 antigen

The study of natural killer (NK) has been difficult because they account for a small percentage of peripheral blood and splenic lymphocytes and the paucity of NK specific antigens that have been identified. We have isolated pure populations of C57BL/6 (H-2b) NK cells using the IgG2b monoclonal antibody PK136 (anti-NK1.1). These NK1.1+ cells were used to immunize 129/J (H-2b) mice, and in this report, we describe three new NK specific monoclonal antibodies (SW3A4(IgM), SW4B12(IgG1), and SW2B4(IgG2b] and their relationship to the known murine NK antigen NK1.1. We have further characterized the NK1.1 antigen as a 39 kd molecule which is coded for by a gene which appears to map to chromosome 6.     

Fetal liver infusion in aplastic anaemia

Forty patients with severe aplastic anaemia received an intravenous infusion of 0.004 to 11.1 x 10(8) (median: 8 x 10(8) hematopoietic cells prepared from the fetal livers of 8-32 week old abortuses. Five patients, who died within 15 days of fetal liver infusion, are excluded from analysis. Twenty-two of the 35 evaluable patients (62%) responded favourably. Six of the 7 patients with good response were alive after 9 to 44 months (median: m = 20); one died 106 months after fetal liver infusion due to renal lithiasis. Four of the 7 with moderate response were alive after 9 to 31 months; 3 died within 16 months. Of 8 patients with minimal response, one was lost to follow-up and the others died in 3.4 to 10 months (m = 6). Median survival of responders was 15.7 months. Bone marrow cellularity became normal in 12 patients following fetal liver infusion. In seven patients, there was a relapse; 6 regained a normal bone marrow cellularity after a second or third fetal liver infusion. These data strongly suggest a role of fetal liver infusion in inducing bone marrow recovery. Of 13 non-responders, 4 were lost to follow-up and 9 died within 20 days-4.3 months (m = 1.6). Fetal liver infusion appears to be an effective therapy in patients with severe aplastic anaemia.     

Remote afterloading endocurie therapy for carcinoma of the cervix.

Since October 1975, 41 cancer patients were treated with a remote afterloading device using fractionated high dose-rate intracavitary radiation. Nineteen of these 41 patients were treated for carcinoma of the cervix. Remote afterloading high dose-rate fractionated intracavitary radiation was given in combination with external irradiation. The dose fractionation and rad equivalent therapeutic (RET) values and various points of interest are discussed.
