Adult mosquitoes of the Anopheles quadrimaculatus complex were collected from Montgomery County, AL (MON) and Alachua County, FL, (KBG) and laboratory stocks of species A and B were established through a selection procedure employing isofemale lines. Progeny from a cross of species B females to ORL males were usually semisterile females and sterile males. Progeny of the reciprocal cross were also semisterile females and sterile males, but the sex ratio was variable and ranged from normal to no males because of male mortality during the pupal stage. Conspecific crosses between strains from the two locations resulted in fertile offspring. Crosses between the sibling species from the two locations invariably gave semisterile females and sterile males (or lethal effects). This evidence confirmed previous data from hybridization and electrophoretic analyses of field populations indicating that Anopheles quadrimaculatus is a species complex.  相似文献

A new member, species C, of the Anopheles quadrimaculatus complex was recently found in collections from the northwest coast of Florida. This new species cannot be differentiated from the other 2 species with available taxonomic keys. Evidence for this taxon as a sibling species includes data on hybrid sterility and distorted sex ratios in the progeny of crosses to species A and B, chromosomal differences, and diagnostic allozymes.  相似文献

Access to food and the amount consumed were investigated within a group of 45 children aged 33 to 60 months, among whom growth stunting was common. Children were observed throughout 1 day; all foods offered and consumed were weighed, and food-related behaviors noted. Children ate frequently, at least 2 meals and an average of 7.4 +/- 2.6 snacks daily. Children had access to 2029 +/- 575 kcal (8493 +/- 2407 kJ) yet only consumed 1528 +/- 343 kcal (6396 +/- 1436 kJ) daily; thus food availability was not restricting intake. A higher proportion of snacks than meals (85 per cent vs. 71 per cent) was consumed. Children requested foods frequently (x = 9.2 +/- 4.3) and 76 per cent of requests were fulfilled. Neither amount of accessible food nor amount consumed differed by age, gender, or socioeconomic status. The importance of the child's role in determining food intake, and of snacking to overall food consumption, was demonstrated.  相似文献

Cognitive deficits associated with closed head injury (CHI) have been well studied. Less attention has been directed to the emotional consequences of CHI and subsequent attempts to cope with major life events. CHI typically constitutes a catastrophic injury, yet few studies have examined coping strategies used by individuals after CHI or the effects of CHI on family functioning that may mediate coping. Previous workers have speculated that time since injury is a crucial determinant of coping; however, this has not been investigated with regard to CHI. In this preliminary investigation, 40 patients with CHI were compared with 17 neurologically intact controls. The CHI group was divided into two groups according to time since injury. It was found that patients with CHI used information seeking as their most dominant coping strategy regardless of their time since injury. Patients with CHI had higher family cohesion scores than control subjects. Implications of these findings for psychological response to CHI are discussed.  相似文献

Assessment of disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis with (18)F-FDG PET.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
The aim of this study was to assess synovitis by (18)F-FDG PET in an individual joint analysis and in a global analysis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease activity and to compare (18)F-FDG PET parameters with clinical, biologic, and sonographic (US) rheumatoid parameters. METHODS: Three hundred fifty-six joints were assessed in 21 patients with active RA: the knees in all subjects and either wrists as well as metacarpophalangeal and proximal interphalangeal joints in 13 patients, or ankles and the first metatarsophalangeal joints in the remaining 8 patients. PET analysis consisted of a visual identification of (18)F-FDG uptake in the synovium and measurements of standardized uptake values (SUVs). Independent assessors performed the clinical and US examinations. RESULTS: PET positivity was found in 63% of joints, whereas 75%, 79%, and 56% were positive for swelling, tenderness, and US analysis, respectively. Both the rate of PET-positive joints and the SUV increased with the number of positive parameters present (swelling, tenderness, US positivity) and with the synovial thickness. The mean SUV was significantly higher in joints where a power Doppler signal was found. In a global PET analysis, the number of PET-positive joints and the cumulative SUV were significantly correlated with the swollen and tender joint counts, the patient and physician global assessments, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein serum levels, the disease activity score and the simplified disease activity index, the number of US-positive joints, and the cumulative synovial thickness. CONCLUSION: (18)F-FDG PET is a unique imaging technique that can assess the metabolic activity of synovitis and measure the disease activity in RA.  相似文献

We have studied 14 patients from a kindred with an autosomal dominant form of myotonia, with features differing from most cases of autosomal dominant or recessive myotonia congenita. All patients had painful muscle stiffness that was provoked by fasting and oral potassium administration and was relieved by carbohydrate-containing foods. Muscle biopsies showed the presence of type 1, 2A, and 2B fibers, as opposed to the absence of type 2B fibers seen in some patients with myotonia congenita. Acetazolamide was dramatically effective in alleviating myotonia in all patients and was more effective than other antimyotonic agents.  相似文献

Background BMS-747158-02 is a novel fluorine 18-labeled pyridazinone derivative designed for cardiac imaging. The uptake and retention mechanisms of F-18 BMS-747158-02 in cardiac myocytes were studied in vitro, and the biodistribution of F-18 BMS-747158-02 was studied in vivo in mice. Methods and Results Fluorine 19 BMS-747158-01 inhibited mitochondrial complex I (MC-I) in bovine heart submitochondrial particles with an IC50 of 16.6±3 nmol/L that was comparable to the reference inhibitors of MC-1, rotenone, pyridaben, and deguelin (IC50 of 18.2±6.7 nmol/L, 19.8±2.6 nmol/L, and 23.1±1.5 nmol/L, respectively). F-18 BMS-747158-02 had high uptake in monolayers of neonatal rat cardiomyocytes (10.3%±0.7% of incubated drug at 60 minutes) that was inhibited by 200 nmol/L of rotenone (91%±2%) and deguelin (89%±3%). In contrast, an inactive pyridaben analog, P-0 (IC50 value>4 μmol/L in MC-1 assay), did not inhibit the binding of F-18 BMS-747158-02 in cardiomyocytes. Uptake and washout kinetics for F-18 BMS-747158-02 in rat cardiomyocytes indicated that the time to half-maximal (t1/2) uptake was very rapid (approximately 35 seconds), and washout t1/2 for efflux of F-18 BMS-747158-02 was greater than 120 minutes. In vivo biodistribution studies in mice showed that F-18 BMS-747158-02 had substatial myocardial uptake (9.5%±0.5% of injected dose per gram) at 60 minutes and heart-to-lung and heart-to-liver ratios of 14.1±2.5 and 8.3±0.5, respectively. Positron emission tomography imaging in the mouse allowed clear cardiac visualization and demonstrated sustained myocardial uptake through 55 minutes. Conclusions F-18 BMS-747158-02 is a novel positron emission tomography cardiac tracer targeting MC-I in cardiomyocytes with rapid uptake and slow washout. These characteristics allow fast and sustained accumulation in the heart.  相似文献

PURPOSE: To verify whether estimation of bone mineral density (BMD) using digital X-ray radiogrammetry (DXR) is possible on children and to determine normative values of both such a DXR-BMD estimate and a corresponding metacarpal index (DXR-MCI) on. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In retrospect, X-rays were selected of the hands of 200 healthy Caucasian children (120 boys and 80 girls, aged 4-18 yr). The involved children were selected among a larger group of children submitted to the surgical department of our institute for evaluation of a suspected fracture after an occurred trauma. All children with a verified fracture or a chronic bone-related disease, including bone age retardation or acceleration, were excluded from the study. Furthermore, only conventional X-rays with the same film and capture parameters were included. The images were scanned and analyzed using the Pronosco X-posure system V.2 (Sectra Pronosco, Denmark). DXR-BMD, DXR-MCI, and a porosity index (DXR-PI) were automatically calculated using the midshafts of the metacarpals II-IV. Mean values of DXR-BMD and DXR-MCI were calculated separately for girls and boys in 2-yr intervals. RESULTS: In the present study the system has been demonstrated to be capable of calculating DXR-BMD from conventional X-rays of the hand from children down to approx 6 yr of age. This ability depended somewhat on the diameter and the length of the involved metacarpals. The success rate was higher for large bones than for small bones. The system succeeded in analyzing the images of 110 boys and 68 girls. Values of DXR-BMD were observed to increase with age from 0.40 g/cm2 to 0.62 g/cm2 in the male group and from 0.39 g/cm2 to 0.54 g/cm2 in the female group. Girls aged 11-12 yr had a higher DXR-BMD than did boys, corresponding to the earlier entry to puberty of girls. Standard deviations (SDs) reached values of up to 0.05 g/cm2. DXR-MCI increased with age from 0.36 to 0.47 for boys and from 0.34 to 0.49 for girls with a maximum SD of 0.06. The correlation between DXR-BMD and age was r=0.83 and r=0.84 for boys and girls, respectively. The corresponding correlations for DXR-MCI was lower, with observed correlations of r=0.63 (boys) and r=0.68 (girls), respectively, with p<0.01 in all cases. The DXR-PI did not reveal a significant correlation to age (r=-0.31 and r=0.04. respectively) and showed SDs marginally higher than the calculated mean values. CONCLUSION: The newly available DXR-methodology seems to offer the ability to determine DXR-BMD and DXR-MCI in children starting with a bone age of 6. This possibility may be of special relevance for children suffering from chronic bone diseases that require repeated X-rays of the hand (e.g. to determine bone age). The acquired normative data suggest that the measurements are of clinical value owing to low age-dependent variability (SDs) relative to an observed high increase with age. The clinical value of the porosity index (DXR-PI) remains uncertain and is limited owing to a high inter-individual variability.  相似文献

The incidence and severity of catheter-induced tricuspid regurgitation has not been studied extensively. Given the frequency with which right heart catheters are employed to measure cardiac output, it is important to know whether the severity of catheter-induced tricuspid regurgitation is sufficient to invalidate the measurement of thermodilution cardiac output. Accordingly, the purpose of the present prospective study was to determine the incidence and severity of catheter-induced tricuspid regurgitation in 25 men (mean age, 58.1 +/- 1.4 years) using Doppler ultrasound. The tricuspid valve was interrogated from two orthogonal views using pulsed-wave and color flow Doppler, either in the presence or absence of a 7-French catheter across the tricuspid valve. The severity of catheter-induced tricuspid regurgitation was graded semiquantitatively using a validated scoring system. Pulsed-wave Doppler studies showed that the incidence of catheter-induced tricuspid regurgitation was 48 percent, and that the average tricuspid regurgitation score increased from 0.41 +/- 0.16 to 0.61 +/- 0.17 (p less than 0.01). Color flow Doppler studies showed similar findings. Further, the incidence of catheter-induced tricuspid regurgitation was not related to the patient's underlying hemodynamic status or right ventricular geometry. In conclusion, this study shows for the first time that the quantitative extent of catheter-induced tricuspid regurgitation is small, and is therefore unlikely to be important clinically, particularly with regard to the assessment of thermodilution cardiac output.  相似文献
