Seroepidemiology of human syncytial virus: antibody prevalence in the Pacific

A seroepidemiological survey of the human syncytial (foamy) virus was done by means of an indirect immunofluorescence test on 1,717 sera from nine different Pacific island territories. The specificity of the reaction was verified by neutralization tests. The study indicated that the virus is ubiquitous in this part of the world, with no region being entirely free of antibody. The antibody prevalence ranged from a low of 1.2% in Ponape to a high of 15.6% in the Cook Islands. The average prevalence for the nine insular communities was 6.9%.     

Intracelluläre Potentialmessungen zur normalen Spontanaktivität der isolierten Portalvene des Meerschweinchens

Zusammenfassung Es wird eine Technik beschrieben, die langfristige intracelluläre Potentialmessungen an isolierten Segmenten der Portalvene selbst bei starken Tonusschwankungen erlaubt. Das normale Aktivitätsmuster ist durch die Überlagerung folgender Rhythmen gekennzeichnet: 1. Minutenrhythmus (MR), der eine Frequenz von 0.5–2/min besitzt und mit geringen Schwankungen des basalen Membranpotentials (Amplitude um 5 mV) einhergeht. 2. Basaler organieigener Rhythmus (BOR), der die minutenrhythmischen Aktivitätsphasen untergliedert und mit Potentialschwankungen von 10–30 mV verbunden ist; seine Frequenz beträgt 5–10/min. 3. Schnelle Oscillationen des Membranpotentials im Sekundenrhythmus (SR), die den Depolarisationsphasen des BOR überlagert sind. 4. Spikes mit Amplituden zwischen 40 und 60 mV, die vom SR getriggert werden.Bezüglich MR, SR und Spikes bestehen große Ähnlichkeiten mit anderen glattmuskulären Präparaten (z. B. Taenia coli und Fundus ventriculi des Meerschweinchens), während der BOR als mehr spezifisch für die Portalvene anzusehen ist. Alle Rhythmen sind resistent gegen Tetrodotoxin und somit myogener Natur. Gliederung und Terminologie der Rhythmen werden im Zusammenhang mit den Befunden an anderen Präparaten diskutiert.     

Opiate and peptide interaction: effect of enkephalins on morphine analgesia

Interactions between the weakly analgesic enkephalins and morphine on morphine-induced analgesia were studied. Met-enkephalin exhibited morphine analgesia whereas Leu-enkephalin potentiated it. Both Met- and Leu-enkephalin, when tested alone, were not analgesic. The strongly analgesic FK33824 (Sandoz) compound, like Leu-enkephalin, also potentiated morphine analgesia. Tolerance developed to morphine analgesia but not to Met-enkephalin inhibition of morphine analgesia.     

Potency of the N3im-methyl analog of TRH in the induction of shaking movements in the rat

The relative potencies of TRH analogs in provoking a shaking response in rats were determined. Bilateral administration of 0.011–2.0 μg TRH analog into the periaqueductal-fourth ventricular spaces of the barbiturate-anesthetized rat showed that N^3im-methyl TRH was approximately 10X more potent than TRH, wherease N^1im-methyl TRH was approximately 10X less potent than TRH. These results indicate that the potencies of the TRH analogs in inducing shaking parallel their thyrotropin-releasing activities.
