Vaccination of Lewis rats with temperature-sensitive mutants of Mycoplasma pulmonis: adoptive transfer of immunity by spleen cells but not by sera.

Temperature-sensitive mutant vaccines protect rats against Mycoplasma pulmonis infection. The role of the humoral or cellular immune response in resistance to mycoplasma infection was investigated by adoptive-transfer experiments. Spleen cells from Lewis rats vaccinated but not challenged with wild-type organisms (vaccinated) and spleen cells from rats vaccinated (or not) and challenged were effective in preventing syngeneic recipients from developing respiratory disease. There was also a significant reduction in the incidence and number of challenging organisms in the respiratory system. In contrast, sera from the same donors had no detectable effect on the number of mycoplasmas recovered or on lesion development in the respiratory tract. We conclude that cellular immunity rather than humoral immunity generated in vaccinated rats confers protection against subsequent infection.

血瘀证患者的血液动力学观察

本文通过对14名心血管病血瘀证患者血液动力学观察,北与非血瘀证患者(n=29)及正常对照组(n=24)比较,表明血瘀证患者的血液动力学改变乃以后负荷加重为特征,而不表现为心脏收缩功能的减退。该改变与血瘀证的血液流变性异常具有相同的意义。与已有的关于心气虛表现为左心收缩功能减退的研究结论相联系,似可认为,由负荷加重,最终累及心脏收缩功能减退为血瘀向气虚血瘀转化的病理生理基础。     

Magnetic resonance imaging and single-photon emission computed tomography changes in hypoglycemia-induced chorea.

We present two case studies, one of generalized chorea and one of hemichorea, both after severe hypoglycemia episodes. Both cases showed hyperperfusion in their SPECT scans. The MRI and SPECT findings serve as clues regarding the role of basal ganglion dysfunction associated with chorea.

Identifying incident cases of parkinsonism among veterans using a tertiary medical center.

To better understand the impact of incident Parkinson's disease (PD) on the Veteran's Health Administration (VHA) and to develop methods applicable to future epidemiological research, we performed a medical record review study at a tertiary referral VHA medical center. Searching the local data base, we identified 782 veterans with diagnostic codes for PD or secondary parkinsonism (SP) between 1998 and 2000. Based on structured medical record review, a movement disorders specialist confirmed diagnoses for incident parkinsonism cases. Among the 782, 191 incident parkinsonism cases were identified (100 PD, 75 SP, and 16 Parkinson's Plus). Incident PD cases were older at diagnosis (74.5 vs. 70.4 yr; P < 0.05) and more likely to be white (81% vs. 62; P < 0.07) than incident SP cases. Diagnostic codes were insufficient to distinguish between incident PD and SP (positive predictive value, 57% and 39%, respectively), and VHA sources failed to identify 21% of confirmed deaths among the incident PD cohort by November 2004. Although the large number of incident cases identified suggests PD is an important cause of disability among elderly VHA users, observed limitations of VHA sources for identifying incident PD cases and determining their vital status should be considered when designing future studies.     

FM sonography in diffuse liver disease: prospective assessment and blinded analysis

FM sonography - a signal-processing technique that uses frequency and phase information as well as amplitude data - shows promise in evaluation of patients with diffuse liver disease. In a prospective blinded review of 37 patients with biopsy-proved liver disease and 42 healthy volunteers, FM sonography was clearly superior to traditional amplitude-based (AM) sonography in distinguishing healthy from diseased subjects. Statistically significant differences were seen in accuracy (FM, 98.7%; AM, 84.8%), sensitivity (FM, 97.3%; AM, 70.3%), and negative predictive value (FM, 97.7%; AM, 78.8%). Our data also suggest that current FM sonographic techniques cannot differentiate among histologic findings associated with different hepatic parenchymal abnormalities. It is unclear, therefore, whether FM imaging can reduce the numbers of patients who require biopsy for diagnosis or the frequency of biopsy procedures in patients with known disease.     

A cluster analysis for threshold perimetry

Cluster analysis in perimetry is a technique used in the evaluation of localised visual field loss. It has previously been applied to suprathreshold data and, unlike the indices currently available to indicate localised loss, it is influenced by the relative positions of individual defects. This paper describes a cluster analysis for use with data from Program 31 of the Octopus perimeter. To demonstrate the technique, sensitivity values of normal 60-year-old subject were altered to simulate localised loss. Illustrative examples of clinical cases are given, showing differing degrees of localised loss that do not influence the corrected loss variance (CLV) but influence the computed cluster parameters. It is hoped that the value of this form of analysis will be demonstrated in clinical follow-up of glaucoma patients.     

A proton relaxation enhancement investigation of the binding of fatty acid spin labels to human serum albumin

Proton relaxation enhancement (PRE) values for fatty acid spin labels bound to human serum albumin have been investigated using the inversion-recovery method at 24 MHz. At 0.1 mM protein concentration and a label-to-protein ratio of one-to-one, the PRE value for 12-Doxylsterate-albumin complex is 7.8 +/- 2.3, whereas the PRE values for 5-Doxylstearate and 16-Doxylstearate-albumin complexes are 1.5 +/- 0.6 and 1.7 +/- 0.7, respectively. Addition of 10-fold excess of stearic acid reduced the PRE values nearly to 1, indicating that the strong enhancements arise from direct binding of fatty acid spin labels to human serum albumin. PRE values for all three labels exhibit maxima as a function of the label-to-protein ratio, suggesting multiple binding sites for fatty acid spin labels with labels in the tightest binding sites not resulting in the most effective relaxation. Based on the rates of reduction of ESR signal amplitudes by sodium ascorbate, the difference in PRE values for the three fatty acid spin labels bound to albumin is attributed to the difference in water accessibility of the nitroxide moieties at various positions along the acyl chain, being greater at the C-12 position than at C-5 or C-16 position. The PRE value of 8 for 12-Doxylstearate bound to human serum albumin indicates that this complex may be a suitable paramagnetic contrast agent for in vivo NMR imaging.
