Enkephalin-like immunoreactivity (ENK-LI) was found throughout the spinal cord of the long-tailed ray Himantura fai. The densest ENK-LI was in the superficial portion of lamina A of the dorsal horn. Lamina B and the deeper parts of lamina A contained radially oriented, labelled fibres. Laminae C, D, and E contained many longitudinally orientated fascicles which were surrounded by a reticulum of transversely orientated, labelled fibres, some of which projected into the ventral and lateral funiculi. Labelled fibres were found in the dorsal commissure and around the central canal, but the later did not cross the midline. One-third of all enkephalinergic cells were found throughout laminae A and B, while two-thirds were located in the medial half of C, D, and E. Occasionally a labelled cell was located in the lateral funiculus. The ventral horn (laminae F and G) contained many enkephalinergic fibres but no labelled nuclei. A few dorsal column axons contained ENK-LI. In the lateral funiculus there were two groups of labelled axons, a superficial, dorsolateral group, and a deeper group, occupying a crescent-shaped region. The ventral funiculus also contained many labelled axons. The central projection of the dorsal root passed through the substantia gelatinosa and divided into rostrally and caudally projecting fascicles within lamina C. The root, and these fascicles, both lacked ENK-LI. In contrast, the fascicles in laminae D and E did contain enkephalinergic fibres. Women’s nutritional status during pregnancy can have long-term effects on children’s brains and cognitive development. Folate and choline are methyl-donor nutrients and are important for closure of the neural tube during fetal development. They have also been associated with brain and cognitive development in children. Animal studies have observed that prenatal folate and choline supplementation is associated with better cognitive outcomes in offspring and that these nutrients may have interactive effects on brain development. Although some human studies have reported associations between maternal folate and choline levels and child cognitive outcomes, results are not consistent, and no human studies have investigated the potential interactive effects of folate and choline. This lack of consistency could be due to differences in the methods used to assess folate and choline levels, the gestational trimester at which they were measured, and lack of consideration of potential confounding variables. This narrative review discusses and critically reviews current research examining the associations between maternal levels of folate and choline during pregnancy and brain and cognitive development in children. Directions for future research that will increase our understanding of the effects of these nutrients on children’s neurodevelopment are discussed. 相似文献

A key responsibility of healthcare professionals is the education of clients/patients, colleagues and students undertaking placements. Peer-assisted learning (PAL) has been incorporated in our veterinary medicine programme for a number of years. The aim of this project was to develop a mechanism to formally recognise the important role that students play in the School’s teaching and learning processes and foster students as partners in education through the development of a novel Undergraduate Certificate in Veterinary Medical Education (UCVME). Students and veterinarians were surveyed in order to inform the design of the programme. The programme is modular and aligned with the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF). Students enrol in their third year, undertaking core and elective components, with completion over the final three years of the degree. The UCVME has been positively received, with 30 of 160 third year students enrolling in the programme’s first year. Activities receiving credit and designed in partnership between staff and students have included: PAL sessions, widening participation school educational workshops and client education events. This initiative has created numerous student-driven educational opportunities. It is hoped that this programme will facilitate the educational training of students and enhance employability and career satisfaction. 相似文献
