A new haplogroup pattern displayed in Fujian Han in China

Human Y-chromosomal binary polymorphisms have been considered to preserve the paternal genetic legacy and provide evidence on human evolution and the genetic relationships among and demographic history of different populations. To reveal the genetic origin and immigration of the Fujian Han, 13 binary markers on the Y chromosome were used to screen Fujian Han by allele-specific polymerase chain reaction. The results indicated that the M₉G marker was highly prevalent (96.20%), suggesting a significant genetic drift. In addition, M₁₂₂C frequency was only 22.78%, and M₄₅A and M₁₀₃T were default. The distinctive haplogroup frequencies (H₁, H₅, and H_6/7/8) imply that the haplogroup pattern is a relatively ancestral and interim type. THE ACTION OF RADIX REHMANNIAE AND PLASTRUM TESTUDINIS ON BETA- ADRENERGIC RECEPTOR-cAMP SYSTEM

Mouse and rat pathological models were pro duced by injections of thyroid hormone (T3 0r T4, Model. I) or hydrocortisone (HC, Model II). A single subcutaneous dose of isoproterenol (ISO) caused plasma cAMP to peak in 5-15 min which was significantly higher in mouse Models I and II than in normal mice. Daily oral administration of a decoction of two Yin tonics-Radix Rehmanniae (RR) and Plastrum Testudinis (PT) reduced peak cAMP in both models. 3H.DHA binding assay re vealed significant elevations of the number of 3 adrenergic receptors in rat Models I and II. Decoc- tion RR and PT restored the peaks to normal range. Yang tonics Radix Aconiti praeparata (RAP) and Cortex Cinnamomi (CC) showcd contradictory effects on these models. It seems unlikely that the action of the two tonics promotes the dlearance of injected hormones, since injected hormone RIA iii plasma showed no differences between Yin tonics treated and untreated models. The therapeutic effects of these two Yin tonics on "Yin deficiency" syndrome of hyperthyroidism or hyperfunction of the adrenal cortex is very probably related to their actions on the O-adrenoreceptor-cAMP system as stated.     

SUBTOTAL SPLENECTOMY IN CIRRHOTIC PATIENTS

lve cirrhotic patients underwent subtotal splenectomy. The operative technique involved pre- servation of anatomic segments and suture of an omental patch to the residual spleen. With knowledge on segmental vascular anatomy in splenomegaly, sub- total splenic resection can be readily accomplished with ease and safety. Follow-up of the 12 patients showed that the preserved spleen had normal uptake of 51Cr denatured erythrocyte isotope, high grade serum IgM, and effect of alleviating fever after splenectomy. Splenic scan and clinical immunologic survey revealed the functional capacity of splenic remnant, and the lower percentage of "pocked" RBCs, an important clue to eusplenia. Thus, the normal function and size retained of the residual spleen were saved. If long-term follow-up confirms the value of segmental splenectomy, it may become an adjuvant treatment in lowering portal hyperten sion in cirrhotic patients.     

REMISSION OF ACUTE LYMPHOBLASTIC LEUKEMIA OF CHILDHOOD FOLLOWING ACUTE INFECTIOUS DISEASE A CASE REPORT

"Spontaneous" remission of leukemia has been observed in both humans and animals. Bierman et al2 in 1953 reported 11 cases of remis- sion in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) of childhood following acute infectious disease. In 1979 we saw a case of ALL remission in a child following a severe attack of respiratory infection.     

IMPROVING ACCESS TO HEALTH SERVICES IS STRATEGIC PRIORITY OF PRODUCTIVITY DEVELOPMENT

As one of the basic human rights, health is an important guarantee for productivity. The authors introduce the Andersen's behavioral model of health service use,as well as the conception and classification of access to health services based on the model. Meanwhile,the relative guidelines and the impact on the health reform of China are discussed, compared with America's and China's. This paper propounds three strategic priority of productivity development.
