Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) is a neuropeptide which also interacts with cells of the immune system. The paucity of specific VIP receptor antagonists has hampered studies of possible receptor heterogeneity and of VIP function. To aid in achieving these goals, a new VIP antagonist, a hybrid between neurotensin and VIP, has been synthesized. This peptide interacted with VIP receptors on spinal cord cells with an affinity 10-fold greater than VIP itself. In contrast, 1000-fold higher concentrations of the antagonist were required to displace labeled VIP from its receptor on lymphoid cells as compared to VIP itself, suggesting VIP receptor heterogeneity between immune and spinal cord cells.  相似文献

Two cases of bilateral malignant glaucoma are presented. In one case the condition developed sequentially in the two eyes; pars plana vitrectomy was eventually needed in the operated eye, whereas the condition responded to medical treatment in the fellow eye. In the second case the two eyes were involved simultaneously nearly 1 year after surgery, and the glaucoma responded to medical treatment.  相似文献

Extracorporeal immune adsorption with staphylococcal protein A (SPA) columns can remove immune complexes and immunoglobulins in the treatment of a variety of diseases. We present the case of an elderly man with neuropathy associated with monoclonal gammopathy, treated by 3 on-line SPA procedures. At the completion of these treatments his neuropathy relapsed, progressing to near-total paralysis. Return to a baseline clinical status required several months. The reason for this severe relapse is not clear. Possible explanations include SPA activation of T-lymphocytes, with release of gamma interferon and increased antigen recognition, or removal of an anti-idiotype control mechanism. We advise caution in the application of immunoadsorption to conditions in which it has not yet been evaluated. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Jackstone calculi are urinary tract stones that have a specific appearance resembling toy jacks. They are almost always composed of calcium oxalate dihydrate and may be found in the urinary bladder or rarely in the upper urinary tract. Their appearance on plain radiographs and computed tomography (CT) in human patients has been well described. They have also been imaged in several species of animals. However, our review of the English medical literature revealed no previous report in which a jackstone calculus had been identified on the sonographic examination of a human patient. We report a case in which a large jackstone calculus was incidentally detected during abdominal sonography in a 75-year-old man.  相似文献

During the light phase of a light/dark cycle, dendrites of teleost cone horizontal cells display numerous finger-like projections, called spinules, which are formed at dawn and degraded at dusk, and are thought to be involved in chromatic feedback processes. We have studied the oscillations of these spinules during a normal light/dark cycle and during 48 h of constant darkness in two groups of strongly rhythmic, diurnal fish, Aequidens pulcher. In one group the retinal dopaminergic system had been destroyed by the application of 6-OHDA, while in the other (control) group, the dopaminergic system was intact. In control fish, oscillations of spinule numbers were observed under both normal and constant dark conditions, indicating the presence of a robust circadian rhythm. However, spinule dynamics were severely affected by the absence of retinal dopamine. During the normal light phase, the number of spinules in 6-OHDA injected retinae was strongly reduced, and throughout continual darkness, spinule formation was almost completely suppressed. These results indicate that dopamine is essential for both light-evoked and circadian spinule formation; furthermore, we conclude that there is no circadian oscillator within horizontal cells controlling the formation of spinules.  相似文献

We describe the pattern of cognitive profiles within a community-based sample of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia (PDD) using cluster analyses, and compare the results with data from patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Fifty patients with PDD and 39 with AD from Stavanger, Norway, and 62 patients with DLB from San Diego, CA, USA were diagnosed by either standardized clinical procedures or criteria (all PDD and all AD cases) or necropsy (all DLB cases). Four subgroups were identified: two subgroups with a subcortical cognitive profile (one with mild and one with moderate dementia severity), one subgroup with global impairment and severe dementia, and one subgroup with a cortical cognitive profile and moderate dementia. Of the patients with PDD and with DLB, 56% and 55%, respectively, had a subcortical cognitive profile, compared with only 33% of the AD patients. Conversely, 30% of the patients with PDD and 26% of those with DLB had a cortical cognitive profile, compared with 67% of the patients with AD. These findings suggest that in some patients with PDD, frontosubcortical changes are the main contributing factor to dementia, whereas in other patients, cortical and hippocampal changes are more important.  相似文献
