A novel conceptual approach to gas‐responsive functionality, with the capability to tune the amphiphilic characteristics of existing waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs), via CO2/N2 bubbling in aqueous solution, is exploited. In this study, a series of functional WPUs are successfully prepared. These colloids exhibit high aqueous stability, excellent capability for emulsification/demulsification as a surfactant, and reversible hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase transition owing to reversible formation of carboxylic acid moieties induced by bubbling CO2 gas. More interestingly, when carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are covalently incorporated into these WPUs, the CNT exhibits CO2‐switchable amphiphilic behavior in a two‐phase mixture of n‐butanol (BuOH)/deionized water, forming a stable hydrophobic CNT dispersion in BuOH upon CO2 bubbling, and reversibly reverting to the previous hydrophilic CNT dispersion in water upon N2 bubbling. With simple preparation and switchable amphiphilic properties, these CO2‐responsive WPUs offer a paradigm for the development of multifunctional gas‐responsive polymers.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess health literacy (word recognition and comprehension) in patients at a rural rheumatology practice and to compare this to health literacy levels in patients from an urban rheumatology practice.Inclusion criteria for this cross-sectional study were as follows: ≥18-year-old patients at a rural rheumatology practice (Mid-North Coast Arthritis Clinic, Coffs Harbour, Australia) and an urban Sydney rheumatology practice (Combined Rheumatology Practice, Kogarah, Australia). Exclusion criteria were as follows: ill-health precluding participation; poor vision/hearing, non-English primary language. Word recognition was assessed using the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Medicine (REALM). Comprehension was assessed using the Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults (TOFHLA). Practical comprehension and numeracy were assessed by asking patients to follow prescribing instructions for 5 common rheumatology medications.At the rural practice (Mid-North Coast Arthritis Clinic), 124/160 patients agreed to participate (F:M 83:41, mean age 60.3 ± 12.2) whereas the corresponding number at the urban practice (Combined Rheumatology Practice) was 99/119 (F:M 69:30, mean age 60.7 ± 17.5). Urban patients were more likely to be born overseas, speak another language at home, and be employed. There was no difference in REALM or TOFHLA scores between the 2 sites, and so data were pooled. REALM scores indicated 15% (33/223) of patients had a reading level ≤Grade 8 whereas 8% (18/223) had marginal or inadequate functional health literacy as assessed by the TOFHLA. Dosing instructions for ibuprofen and methotrexate were incorrectly understood by 32% (72/223) and 21% (46/223) of patients, respectively.Up to 15% of rural and urban patients had low health literacy and <1/3 of patients incorrectly followed dosing instructions for common rheumatology drugs.There was no significant difference in word recognition, functional health literacy, and numeracy between rural and urban rheumatology patients.  相似文献

Conditional ligands have enabled the high‐throughput production of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) libraries that present defined peptides. Immunomonitoring platforms typically concentrate on restriction elements associated with European ancestry, and such tools are scarce for Asian HLA variants. We report 30 novel irradiation‐sensitive ligands, specifically targeting South East Asian populations, which provide 93, 63, and 79% coverage for HLA‐A, ‐B, and ‐C, respectively. Unique ligands for all 16 HLA types were constructed to provide the desired soluble HLA product in sufficient yield. Peptide exchange was accomplished for all variants as demonstrated by an ELISA‐based MHC stability assay. HLA tetramers with redirected specificity could detect antigen‐specific CD8+ T‐cell responses against human cytomegalovirus, hepatitis B (HBV), dengue virus (DENV), and Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV) infections. The potential of this population‐centric HLA library was demonstrated with the characterization of seven novel T‐cell epitopes from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus, HBV, and DENV. Posthoc analysis revealed that the majority of responses would be more readily identified by our unbiased discovery approach than through the application of state‐of‐the‐art epitope prediction. This flow cytometry‐based technology therefore holds considerable promise for monitoring clinically relevant antigen‐specific T‐cell responses in populations of distinct ethnicity.  相似文献

Introduction: Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is an aggressive malignancy arising from the mesothelial cells lining the pleura and other serosal membranes. It is associated with an extremely poor prognosis and has limited therapeutic options.

Areas covered: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is known to be highly overexpressed in mesothelioma with reported EGFR overexpression between 44 to 97%. Given this, several anti-EGFR agents have been trialed in mesothelioma. In this review, we provide an overview of the current available data on anti-EGFR therapies in MM and future directions of investigation with these targeted agents in MM.

Expert opinion: While many anti-EGFR therapies have failed to show significant efficacy in the management of MM, the pathway is biologically active and its abrogation preclinically points toward it being a valid target. Toward targeting the pathway, many novel EGFR-based therapies are still being investigated. Current ongoing research of interest in MM include EGFR-targeted nanotechnology approach for drug delivery, antibodies targeting the extracellular EGFR and potentially anti-EGFR antibody drug conjugates.  相似文献
