The effects of sound generated by an ultrasonic dental scaler and a dental turbine on heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and hemodynamic changes in the frontal cortex were measured and compared with those of pure tone stimulation in 17 young volunteers. Near-infrared spectroscopy and the Finapres technique were used to measure hemodynamic and cardiovascular responses, respectively. The dental sound changed the various physiological parameters. To determine if this change was related to participants' previous experiences with dental treatment, participants were divided into two groups: those who had a previous unpleasant experience with dental treatment and those who had not. Participants with previous unpleasant dental experiences showed a significant decrease in cerebral blood flow. Participants who had not had an unpleasant dental experience did not show significant changes in cerebral blood flow. Thus, although sounds associated with dental treatment may reduce cerebral blood flow, this effect may depend on the dental experiences of the patient. It is recommended that dentists treat patients gently and with empathy to promote a friendly image of dentistry. 相似文献

Presenilin-1 (PS1) is intimately involved in cleavage of amyloid precursor protein to form beta-amyloid peptides, certain forms of which aggregate in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The function(s) of PS1 and its precise involvement in the development of cognitive deficits associated with AD are unclear. We have utilised genetically modified mice that under-express PS1 (PS1(+/-) mice) to investigate the role of PS1 in hippocampal synaptic plasticity. Field excitatory postsynaptic responses elicited by baseline stimulation were indistinguishable between PS1(+/-) mice and wild-type controls. Likewise, a measure of short-term plasticity, paired-pulse facilitation, was normal in PS1(+/-) mice. However, long-term potentiation induced by multiple tetanus trains was reduced in PS1(+/-) animals. These results demonstrate that chronic reduction of PS1 activity leads to impaired synaptic plasticity, thus suggesting a role for PS1 in normal cognitive function. 相似文献

We report a case of Gemella morbillorum mitral bioprosthetic valve endocarditis with perivalvular extension in a 44-year-old human immunodeficiency virus-positive man who is an active intravenous drug user together with review of all published cases. This work presents the synthesis and characterisation of intercalated nanocomposites (NCs) from dispersed water solution blends of octadecyl amine-montmorillonite (ODA-MMT) (NC-0), folic acid (FA) conjugated ODA-MMT (NC-1) and Ag-MMT clay as a stable silver carrying agent (NC-2). The composition, chemical/physical and morphology of NCs with in situ intercalating nanostructures were investigated. Effect of organoclay, FA and Ag-MMT on L929 fibroblast (control), human colon carcinoma (DLD-1) cell lines, and the cytotoxicity, apoptosis and necrosis degree were estimated via WST-1/hemocytometric, double staining (as a ribonuclease A enzyme based method) and fluorescence microscopy methods in a dose-dependent manner. The mentioned cell lines integrated with NCs resulted in remarkable change in both morphology and nuclei of DLD-1 and fibroblast cells by apoptosis analysis. The number of necrotic cells were remarkably increased, as the toxic effects of nanocomposite nanoparticles were applied to both cell lines. Finally, the molecular mechanism of anticancer action of functionalised organoclays was elucidated. 相似文献

Epilepsy is a devastating neurological disorder in which those afflicted can gain benefit from specific treatments based on their genetics and geographic location. Currently the prevalence of epilepsy is estimated at 0.5-3% of the world-wide population, and is increasing in developing countries. In order to make more accurate assessments of the prevalence of epilepsy, we applied the capture-recapture method in a 12-month study of epilepsy in a population from the Sharur district of Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic, Azerbaijan with 114,451 people from sixty nine villages and towns. The following methods were applied to determine epilepsy: Door To Door (DTD) survey, Non-Medical Source (NMS), and Medical Source. Using these three techniques, 1,032 patients with epilepsy (9.02/1000) were included in our study. The DTD survey determined 627 patients with epilepsy (5.48/1000) and 247 (2.16/1000) from the NMS methods versus 158 (1.38/1000) from the Medical Source (MS) methods. Applying the capture-recapture method, NMS, and DTD methods, the number of epilepsy cases increased to 1,330 (11.62/1000) [95% CI: 10.21-13.03]. The combinations of these methods show that 887 people (7.75/1000) have a diagnosis of epilepsy. Multiple epidemiological tasks used in our study can be used to estimate clinical signs and/or markers in future applications for the determination and development of treatment strategies for this devastating disease in the third world countries such as the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. 相似文献
