Primary fibroblast cultures were obtained from 9 patients with xeroderma pigmentosum of various clinical types. Repair replication of the UV-damaged DNA in fibroblasts was studied by means of 3H-thymidine labeling and radioautography. A DNA repair replication was found to be decreased in all xeroderma pigmentosum fibroblasts as compared with the control cells obtained from normal donors. The repair activities in cells from patients ranged from nearly 0% in two infant cases and one case of De Sanctis-Cacchione syndrome to approximately 100% in adult moderate case. There was, however, no correlation between the level of repair replication and the severity of clinical symptoms. Since two cases which showed a lack of repair DNA replication were infant, it is assumed that these cases may develop De Sanctis-Cacchione syndrome in future. On xeroderma pigmentosum cells, a genetic analysis was performed with cell fusion methods using irradiated HVJ virus in order to determine the type of the complementation group. To investigate magnesium status in patients with cardiovascular diseases and in those presenting high factors for these diseases, we measured the concentrations of serum total Mg, serum ionized Mg and intra-erythrocyte Mg. Mg is an important cofactor for many enzymes, especially those involved in phosphate transfer reactions. Mg deficiency has been shown to be associated with fatal cardiovascular diseases, as well as with risk factors for these diseases. Only measurement of the serum concentration of total Mg is routinely available, but ionized Mg is the physiologically active component. Furthermore, most of the body's Mg is present in the intracellular space. Subjects included patients with ischaemic heart disease (n=80), cardiac arrhythmia (n=60), diabetes mellitus (n=36), essential hypertension (n=194) and hypercholesterolaemia (n=60). The same measurements were made in healthy controls (30 men and 26 women; mean age 58+/-11 years). The serum ionized Mg concentration was measured with a selective ion electrode. The intra-erythrocyte Mg concentration was measured by atomic absorption. No gender difference was found for any Mg parameter, nor was age related to any Mg parameter. The serum albumin concentration was positively correlated only with the serum total Mg concentration. Although the serum total Mg concentration was similar in all groups, patients with diabetes mellitus and arrhythmia had lower serum levels of ionized Mg. Patients with essential hypertension exhibited higher intra-erythrocyte Mg concentrations than the healthy controls. Thus the measurement of serum total Mg concentration may obscure the presence of extracellular Mg deficiency in patients with arrhythmia and diabetes mellitus. Almost all physicians involved in treating sexually transmitted infections recognize the specific clinical manifestations
of patients with urethritis. However, in previous studies, the diagnosis of gonococcal urethritis was based on cultures or
staining methods. In this study, we examined in detail the clinical manifestations of patients with urethritis diagnosed by
the nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). A total of 154 patients with male urethritis were included in the study. The NAAT
could distinguish 64 patients with gonococcal urethritis, 45 patients with chlamydial urethritis, and 45 patients with nongonococcal
and nonchlamydial urethritis. Forty-three (67.2%) patients with gonococcal urethritis had more severe symptoms, i.e., moderate
or profuse urethral discharge, and cloudy or purulent discharge, than patients with chlamydial urethritis, nongonococcal and
nonchlamydial urethritis. There were 39 (86.7%) patients in the chlamydial urethritis group with mild symptoms, clear discharge
or none, and moderate or profuse discharge. Although the diagnosis of male urethritis can be performed by microbiological

BACKGROUND: Features of enhanced color flow images in small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are not fully elucidated. The purpose of this study was to clarify the characteristic vascular images in small HCC observed by enhanced color Doppler. METHODS: Enhanced color Doppler using the contrast agent Levovist was performed on 13 patients with HCC smaller than 30 mm. Enhanced color flow appearance was compared with angiographic findings. Time-intensity changes after injection of the contrast agent were analyzed in HCC nodules. RESULTS: Significant improvement in the detection of color flow signals was obtained in small HCC using Levovist, from 33% in precontrast to 92% in postcontrast (p < 0.005). Three patterns of enhanced color flow images, which were related to the angiographic findings, were observed. The time-intensity curve was classified into two types by "time to peak" and "time on plateau" and was associated with the patterns of enhanced images. CONCLUSION: Enhanced color flow imaging promises to be a useful method for evaluating tumor vascularity noninvasively and to contribute to the elucidation of the hemodynamics in small HCC. 相似文献
