Placental p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) concentration and cord blood atopic markers were determined in 19 neonates. Increased placental p,p'-DDE was associated with a statistically significant increase in cord plasma interleukin (IL)-13. Furthermore, both cord plasma IL-4/interferon (IFN)-gamma and IL-13/IFN-gamma ratios were significantly positively associated with placental p,p'-DDE concentration.  相似文献

The effect of cow's milk consumption on childhood asthma has been debated for several years. This study attempts to provide further insight into this association through the use of a longitudinal study design. Newborns from parents with atopic history were recruited from Germany, Austria, and England (n = 696). For five repeated ascertainments, information was collected on cow's milk exposure, incidence of doctor-diagnosed asthma, and confounders. Generalized estimation equations, incorporating different models (concurrent, delayed, combined, and reverse causation), were used to determine this association. No association between cow's milk consumption and childhood asthma was found for the concurrent effects model (OR = 0.81, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.55, 1.20). In the delayed effects model, the direction of the association varied with time of follow-up. Thus, we stratified by period, which resulted in a significant protective delayed effect at 36 months (OR = 0.18, 95% CI = 0.06, 0.49). However, reverse causation negated this finding since the presence of asthma in prior months led to a reduction in further exposure to cow's milk (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.16, 0.99). Hence, cow's milk consumption does not protect against childhood asthma. The apparent protection of cow's milk against asthma may result from parents of asthmatic children avoiding cow's milk, rather than actual prophylaxis.  相似文献

The activity of single neurons in the superior colliculus was recorded while a rhesus monkey made arm movements to visual targets located on a screen in front of him. It was found that the activity of a subpopulation of cells was clearly related to these arm movements. The neurons began to discharge either with the onset of the movement, during the movement period, or well before the onset of electromyogram (EMG) activity and movement, and could be active for the entire duration of EMG activity. While the discharge pattern of some of these'reach'neurons was not different for movements to different target positions, other cells showed graded changes in activity depending on the direction of movement. The peak discharge rate could rise to > 100 impulses/s. Some units received somatosensory input; other reach cells exhibited a visual response and/or presaccadic activity. It is likely that the primate superior colliculus is not only involved in the initiation and control of orientating movements of the eyes but also in reaching movements of the arms.  相似文献

The infective third-stage larvae of the hookworms Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale infect their human hosts by active skin invasion, but A. duodenale is in addition capable of oral infection. The behaviour of the larvae when crawling on surfaces has already been described. Here we analyse in various in vitro systems the other behavioural invasion phases: activation, penetration, and orientation within the host. The larvae normally remained in a motionless, energy-saving, resting posture. An activation to sinusoidal locomotion was stimulated in both species by similar cues such as touch, vibration, water currents, heat, light, and chemicals. Human breath in addition stimulated searching and waving (nictating) behaviour, which facilitates a change-over to the host. Activating cues in air streams were warmth and moisture; CO2 activated only in combination with warmth and/or moisture. Penetration behaviour in both species was stimulated by warmth and skin extracts. The stimulating components of skin extracts were fatty acids, but their stimulating characteristics differed from those inducing schistosome cercarial skin penetration. After penetration into agar substrates, both species showed thermo-orientation, but only A. duodenale followed gradients of serum. The directing serum cues were not amino acids and glucose (the supposed cues for schistosome blood vessel localization), but Ringers solution attracted the larvae. The host-finding and host-invasion behaviour of both hookworm species is well adapted to the invasion of the human skin, and there seems to be no particular adaptation of A. duodenale behaviour to the oral infection mode. Hookworm host-finding behaviour is not as complex as that of schistosome cercariae but seems well adapted to the ecological conditions in the transmission sites.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Eine größere Anzahl von Nestlingen (269) wurde auf Coccidien-Befall hin untersucht. Es handelt sich vorwiegend um Vertreter von Singvogelarten (206) und Haustauben (63). Die Nestjungen waren hier bis zu 17,1% von Coccidien befallen. Die Infektionen erwiesen sich durchweg als sehr schwach. Unter normalen Verhältnissen treten akute Coccidiose-Fälle bei Nestlingen nicht auf.  相似文献

Summary The possible role of microtubules and microfilaments in the secretory process of the rat exocrine pancreas was analysed in vitro using isolated pancreatic lobules. Colchicine and vinblastine as microtubule inhibitors, hexylene glycol as a microtubule stabilizer, and cytochalasin B as a disruptive agent for microfilaments were used in increasing concentrations to test their effects on protein synthesis, intracellular transport, zymogen discharge, and cellular respiration.Colchicine only at 10–2 M concentrations inhibits protein synthesis, while vinblastine inhibits at 10–6 and 10–5 M by 20% and at 10–4 M by 55%. A similar inhibition is observed with 1.5% concentrations of hexylene glycol while cytochalasine B at 1,5 and 10 g/ml is without effect on protein synthesis. Colchicine and vinblastine have their major effects on intracellular transport both in secretion studies and cell fractionation experiments. Colchicine in concentrations between 10–3 to 10–5 M inhibits discharge of newly synthesized proteins by 50%, while vinblastine shows a dose-response relationship of 40% inhibition at 10–6 M to 90% at 10–4 M. Discharge of amylase is uniformly reduced by 30% by both colchicine and vinblastine in the whole dose range. The pronounced effect of colchicine and vinblastine is evident in cell fractionation studies: both drugs inhibit the disappearance of protein radioactivity from microsomes and its appearance in zymogen granules; similarly the peak radioactivity in smooth microsomes (Golgi) appears delayed. No differential effect on the secretory process was observed with 1.5% concentrations of hexylene glycol or cytochalasin B at 1.5 and 10 g/ml concentrations. A fines tructural analysis of microtubules and microfilaments in the exocrine pancreatic cell reveals their distribution in all parts of the cytoplasm and in relation to all cell organelles. Both systems (microtubules, microfilaments) seem to be connected, at least in certain areas of the cytoplasm and at the plasma membrane.The reduction of transport efficiency by microtubule inhibitors results in a deposition of secretory material in the cisternal space of the rough endoplasmatic reticulum, which leads to the formation of paracrystals. Summary The concentration of free and conjugated norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E) and dopamine (DA) were measured by a modified radioenzymatic assay in the plasma and in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 45 patients with normal and in 21 patients with disturbed blood-CSF barriers. In patients with an undisturbed blood-CSF barrier the free NE and E in CSF were 128±45 ng/l and 27±20 ng/l (mean values±S.E.), respectively, and represented about 50 % of the average plasma values. Mean DA was not different in plasma (47±22 ng/l) and in CSF (41±19 ng/l). Both in plasma and in CSF, considerable higher free catecholamine (CA) levels were measured in patients with dysfunction of the blood-CSF barrier. In one patient with bacterial meningitis twofold higher concentrations of free NE and DA in CSF as compared with plasma were detectable. Sulfate conjugates of catecholamines are predominant in plasma and CSF.The contribution of conjugated CA to total CA in plasma from patients with normal blood-CSF barrier averaged 69.7 %, 63.1 % and 98.1 % for NE, E and DA, respectively and was significantly lower in the CSF (p<0.001). In patients with disturbed blood-CSF barrier, the increases of conjugated CA were more pronounced in CSF than in plasma. Further, the contribution of conjugated NE and E to total NE and E in CSF was not only increased in patients with bacterial meningitis, but also in patients with renal insufficiency compared to the control patients (p<0.02 and p<0.001 resp.). Free and conjugated NE, E and DA in the plasma and CSF were related significantly (p<0.01 resp.) with stronger correlation for conjugated CA (p<0.001 resp.). These results together with findings in the literature, suggest that there is little or no rostral-caudal gradient in CSF CA conjugate concentrations and that even in patients with intact blood-CSF barrier plasma conjugated CA concentrations influence those in CSF. Thus only free CA levels in CSF may reflect the central adrenergic activity.  相似文献
