Anomalously warm sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) are associated with interannual and decadal variability as well as with long-term climate changes indicative of global warming. Such oscillations could precipitate changes in a variety of oceanic processes to affect marine species worldwide. As global temperatures continue to rise, it will be critically important to be able to predict the effects of such changes on species' abundance, distribution, and ecological relationships so as to identify vulnerable populations. Off the coast of British Columbia, warm SSTs have persisted through the last two decades. Based on 16 years of reproductive data collected between 1975 and 2002, we show that the extreme variation in reproductive performance exhibited by tufted puffins (Fratercula cirrhata) was related to changes in SST both within and among seasons. Especially warm SSTs corresponded with drastically decreased growth rates and fledging success of puffin nestlings. Puffins may partially compensate for within-season changes associated with SST by adjusting their breeding phenology, yet our data also suggest that they are highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change at this site and may serve as a valuable indicator of biological change in the North Pacific. Further and prolonged increases in ocean temperature could make Triangle Island, which contains the largest tufted puffin colony in Canada, unsuitable as a breeding site for this species.  相似文献

The present study was carried out on 30 cadavers (5 fresh, 20 preserved adult and 5 fresh stillborn) following injection of red latex through the subclavian and common iliac arteries. The blood supply to the peripheral nerves was studied in general, together with the vascular pedicles to the ulnar, saphenous, sural, deep and superficial peroneal nerves, and the superficial branch of the radial nerve. The nutrient arteries supplying the peripheral nerves came from either the adjacent axial artery or the fasciocutaneous or muscular arteries. They formed anastomotic channels in the epineurium and penetrated it to form a continuous longitudinal artery. Based on the presence of absence of dominant arterial pedicles, five patterns of blood-supply to the nerves could be identified. I: no dominant arterial pedicle; II: only one dominant artery (e.g. artery with a diameter more than 0.8 mm and accompanying the nerve for most of its length); III: only one dominant vessel that divided into ascending and descending branches to supply the nerve; IV: multiple dominant pedicles; V: multiple dominant arterial pedicles forming a continuous artery that accompanied the nerve. The arterial pedicles to the ulnar, saphenous and deep peroneal nerves and the superficial branch of the radial n. had mean diameters of over 0.8 mm, thus being suitable for microvascular anastomosis. Those to the sural nerve were not present in two thirds of the dissected cadavers. In 10% of the cadavers the superficial peroneal nerve had an arterial pedicle that accompanied the nerve for less than two cm with a mean diameter less than 0.8 mm. The ulnar nerve could be very suitable as a donor vascularized nerve graft as it had a dominant vascular pedicle in all the cases studied; however, its use should be restricted to C8 and T1 root damage of the brachial plexus. The superficial branch of the radial n. might be suitable for vascularized nerve grafting, but this is difficult in practice since the radial artery is a major limb artery. The saphenous nerve had a dominant arterial pedicles in all the cadavers dissected and could be the most suitable as a donor vascularized nerve graft, unlike the sural nerve which did not have a dominant arterial pedicle in two-thirds of the specimens. The deep and superficial peroneal nerves may also be unsuitable since the former is accompanied by a major limb vessel while the latter had a dominant vascular pedicle that accompanied the nerve for only a short distance in 10% of the dissected cadavers.  相似文献

Some of the problems raised by the combination of porous scaffolds and self-assembling peptide (SAP) gels as constructs for tissue engineering applications are addressed for the first time. Scaffolds of poly(ethyl acrylate) and the SAP gel RAD16-I were employed. The in situ gelation of the SAP gel inside the pores of the scaffolds was studied. The scaffold-cum-gel constructs were characterized morphologically, physicochemically and mechanically. The possibility of incorporating an active molecule (bovine serum albumin, taken here as a model molecule for others) in the gel within the scaffold’s pores was assessed, and the kinetics of its release in phosphate-buffered saline was followed. Cell seeding and colonization of these constructs were preliminarily studied with L929 fibroblasts and subsequently checked with sheep adipose-tissue-derived stem cells intended for further preclinical studies. Static (conventional) and dynamically assisted seedings were compared for bare scaffolds and the scaffold-cum-gel constructs. The SAP gel inside the pores of the scaffold significantly improved the uniformity and density of cell colonization of the three-dimensional (3-D) structure. These constructs could be of use in different advanced tissue engineering applications, where, apart from a cell-friendly extracellular matrix -like aqueous environment, a larger-scale 3-D structure able to keep the cells in a specific place, give mechanical support and/or conduct spatially the tissue growth could be required.  相似文献

Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) after lung transplantation (LT) is a heterogeneous syndrome that comprises clinical presentations with diverse grades of severity. Proadrenomedullin (proADM) levels may be associated with PGD and may enhance its relationship with outcomes. We prospectively included 100 LT recipients. Plasma levels of proADM were measured at 24, 48 and 72 h after admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). We assessed their relationship with PGD grade and ICU mortality. Fifty patients (50%) presented grade 3 PGD at ICU admission. Twenty‐two patients (22%) developed grade 3 PGD at 72 h, the only grade associated with higher mortality (odds ratio 6.84, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.47–38.44). ProADM levels measured at 24 h (3.25 vs. 1.61 nmol/L; p = 0.016) and 72 h (2.17 vs. 1.35 nmol/L; p = 0.011) were higher in these patients than the rest of the population. When we added the individual predictive utility of grade 3 PGD at 72 h for ICU mortality (area under the curve [AUC] 0.72, 95% CI 0.53–0.90) to that of ProADM at 72 h, the predictive value of the model improved (AUC 0.81, 95% CI 0.65–0.97). Higher levels of proADM measured following LT are associated with grade 3 PGD at 72 h. ProADM enhances the association of this entity with mortality.  相似文献

Summary Biomechanical models of the cervical spine require knowledge of the position, size and orientation of the individual muscles that act on the cervical spine. We have developed a technique to stereometrically measure anatomical specimens. The apparatus is composed of three graduated metallic rods, which slide along a fixed support. This method is accurate to map the anatomy of individual muscles and provides quantitative data on their lines of action. Results are obtained from one specimen. The computer processing of the collected data allows formulation of a three-dimensional model of the neck muscles in man.

Résumé Pour élaborer un modèle biomécanique de la colonne cervicale, il faut connaître la position, la taille et l'orientation des différents muscles du cou. Nous avons mis au point une méthode de mesure stéréométrique sur des sujets anatomiques. L'appareil est composé de 3 axes métalliques gradués qui coulissent sur un support fixe. Cette technique permet une étude anatomique précise de chacun des muscles de la nuque, fournissant des données quantitatives sur les différents faisceaux ou lignes d'action. Les résultats sont obtenus sur un sujet. Leur traitement informatique permettra l'élaboration d'un modèle mathématique tridimensionnel des muscles du cou chez l'homme.

We have previously reported that few striatal axons from adult host brain innervate intrastriatal grafts of fetal ventral mesencephalic tissue. To see whether the immature rat brain would favor striatal innervation of the graft, unilateral implantation of fetal ventral mesencephalic tissue was carried out at 7 (P7), 14 (P14), or 60 (adults) days of age in neonatally dopamine- (DA)-lesioned and nonlesioned rats. Immunocytochemistry for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), and/or dopamine- and adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate-regulated phosphoprotein-32 (DARPP-32) was performed 2–6 months later. In the great majority of immature and in all adult recipients, the resulting graft consisted of a distinct intrastriatal mass of tissue surrounded by the host parenchyma. Most TH-immunopositive neurons were found within the confines of such grafts, although some were lying at short distances into the host striatal tissue, particularly in immature recipients. In a few immature recipients, there was, however, extensive intermingling of TH-positive neurons with the adjacent host brain tissue. In all recipients grafted at P7, P14, or as adults, the distinct, intra-parenchymal grafts contained moderate numbers of DARPP-32-positive processes, mainly at their periphery. These results indicate that the limited capacity of host striatal neurons to grow axons into transplanted fetal ventral mesencephalic tissue is not markedly different in young versus adult rats. A better integration of the ventral mesencephalic graft into the striatal circuitry of immature — as opposed to adult — recipients should therefore rely more on the higher tendency of DA neurons to become located into the host tissue following transplantation in young rats.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to determine the most cost-effective option to prevent alloimmunization against the Rh factor.MethodsA virtual population of Rh-negative pregnant women in Quebec was built to simulate the cost-effectiveness of preventing alloimmunization. The model considered four options: (1) systematic use of anti-D immunoglobulin; (2) fetal Rh(D) genotyping; (3) immunological determination of the father’s Rh type; (4) mixed screening: immunological determination of the father’s Rh type, followed if positive by fetal Rh(D) genotyping. Two outcomes were considered, in addition to the estimated costs: (1) the number of babies without hemolytic disease, and (2) the number of surviving infants.ResultsIn a first pregnancy, two options emerged as the most cost-effective options: systematic prophylaxis and immunological Rh typing of the father, with overlapping confidence intervals between them. In a second pregnancy, the results were similar. In all cases (first or second pregnancy or a combination of the two) fetal genotyping was not found to be a cost-effective option.ConclusionRoutine prophylaxis and immunological Rh typing of the father are the most cost-effective options for the prevention of Rh alloimmunization. Considering that immunological typing of the father would probably not be carried out by the majority of clinicians, routine prophylaxis remains the preferred option. However, this could change if the cost of Rh(D) fetal genotyping fell below $140 per sample.  相似文献

ObjectivesThe World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding of infants up to 6 months. The proportion of breastfeeding initiation and duration increased more slowly in France than in neighboring European countries. The perinatal network data are incomplete. The objective of this study is to evaluate within the perinatal network “Loire–Nord Ardèche” (ELENA), breastfeeding rates in hospital discharge and at 2 months, and identify needs for maternal support.Patients and methodsProspective and declarative study by written questionnaire, with all the women volunteers who gave birth in October 2011 in a maternity of our perinatal network.ResultsPopulation concerns 426 women volunteers of 968 new mothers. Two hundred and ninety-four questionnaires were used: 69% of women initiated breastfeeding, 63% have continued after the stay in the maternity and 50% at 2 months. Eighty percent chose to breastfeed before pregnancy, mainly for child health, 65% with the support of their spouse, 58% if their mother had breastfed. Simple pathologies of breastfeeding and childbirth were responsible for weaning. A third of women in difficulty have not consulted anyone, one third wanted more practical help and systematic support motherhood.Discussion and conclusionThe rate of initiation of breastfeeding or duration and the great influence of the surroundings of the mother, similar in this study to literature data, call for enhanced prenatal information for parents and systematic “lactation” consultation in the early post-partum, by trained professionals and with the help of support associations for breastfeeding. This study showed a clear need to support breastfeeding. It has also allowed targeting actions that would be able to avoid the majority of early weaning.  相似文献
