Thymoma is described in a 3-year-old female Java sparrow (Padda oryzivora). Histopathologically, the subcutaneous mass from the cervical region consisted of epithelial cells characterized by large polyhedral cells and spindle cells, which sometimes showed squamous differentiation, and small lymphocytes without apparent atypical forms. Immunohistochemically, the epithelial cells possessed cytokeratin in their cytoplasm and proliferating cell nuclear antigen.  相似文献

AIMS: Studies are disclosing that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is involved in the aetiology of various neoplasms including undifferentiated carcinomas of the aerodigestive tract. The aetiology of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), a malignant neoplasm arising from intrahepatic biliary epithelia, has yet to be fully evaluated. To date, two cases of EBV-related ICC have been reported, and they presented foci of lymphoepitheliomatous undifferentiated carcinoma components. METHODS AND RESULTS: To determine whether EBV is commonly involved in the developments of ICC, we performed in-situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry for EBV in 215 cases of ICC in Japan, using a probe against EBV-coded nuclear RNA (EBER) and a specific antibody against latent membrane protein-1 (LMP-1), respectively. We did not detect EBV-infected carcinoma cells in any of the ICC cases examined. No lymphoepitheliomatous undifferentiated carcinoma components were found either. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that EBV infection is unlikely to be involved in the pathogenesis of ICC.  相似文献

The cortical masticatory area (CMA) elicits rhythmic jaw movements in response to repetitive stimulation and is involved in the control of mastication. Based on jaw movement patterns, the CMA is divided into two parts. One is the part of the CMA in which a T-pattern similar to jaw movements during food transport in natural mastication is evoked by electrical stimulation. The other is more dorsomedially located, and during chewing a C-pattern similar to jaw movements can be induced. However, it is still not known which region of the putamen receives projections from the CMA and whether projections originate from both parts of the CMA. In this study, electrophysiological and histological experiments were undertaken in rabbits to investigate projections from the CMA to the putamen. Both experiments showed that the ventral region of the putamen received projections from the CMA. The density of the projections from the CMA area inducing the T-pattern seemed to be higher than that from the area inducing the C-pattern. Furthermore, the peak latency of the evoked potentials from stimulation of the CMA area inducing the T-pattern was shorter than that from stimulation of the area inducing the C-pattern. The data obtained from the present study indicate the functional role of the ventral region of the putamen in the regulation of mastication, and further suggest that the corticostriatal pathway is involved in the transition between behavioral jaw movement patterns.  相似文献

The disturbance of immune regulatory T cells is related to the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis. Here we demonstrated and characterized the serum factor from ulcerative colitis patients that induced proliferation of intrathymic T cells. The factor isolated from the patient sera by a combination of gel filtration and anion-exchange chromatography induced proliferation of CD4+CD8 intrathymic T cells in the organ-cultured embryonic mouse thymus. Purification and amino acid sequence analysis of the serum factor demonstrated that the N-terminal 12 sequence was homologous to that of interleukin-7. SDS-PAGE and Western blot confirmed that purified serum factor was interleukin-7. Enzyme immunoassay demonstrated that the serum interleukin-7 concentration was significantly increased in the patients. PCR and Southern blot hybridization demonstrated that interleukin-7 mRNA expression was increased in the thymus tissues from patients but decreased in the colonic mucosa. Since interleukin-7 is a crucial cytokine for proliferation and differentiation of T cells in the thymus, the present study indicates that interleukin-7 may contribute to the disturbance of immune regulatory T cells in ulcerative colitis.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common skin disease characterized by chronic recurrent eczematous lesions, but its exact etiology and mechanism are unclear. We found that beige rats (DAbg/bg), a mutant model of Chediak-Higashi syndrome, develop skin lesions characterized by pruritus, excoriation, erosion and alopecia. We describe the beige rat and examine its possible usefulness as an AD model. METHODS: Beige rats of 4, 8, 13, 16, 26 and 52 weeks were used. Histological analysis of the skin was performed. Plasma IgE and cytokines were measured. Th1 and Th2 cytokines and RANTES mRNA expression of skin and lymph nodes were evaluated. Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) reactions were examined, and maximization tests were conducted. RESULTS: Skin lesions begin to develop with increases in serum IgE levels and the expression of IL-4 mRNA in the lymph node and skin. Histologically, skin lesions are characterized by acanthosis, ulceration and inflammatory cell infiltration in the dermis. Inflammatory cells consist of CD3+, CD4+, ED1+, ED2+ and I-A+ mononuclear cells, eosinophils, degranulated mast cells and neutrophils accompanying interleukin (IL)-4, interferon (IFN)-gamma and RANTES mRNA expressions of the skin. Inflammatory cells are reduced during chronification with decreased expressions of IL-4, IFN-gamma and RANTES mRNA. In addition, the rats show a high sensitivity to PCA reactions and maximization tests. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that some of the skin lesions of beige rats are morphologically similar to human AD, being characterized by inflammatory cell composition in the acute phase, and increased IgE and RANTES levels. However, the inflammatory process and cytokine expression pattern are different from those in human AD.  相似文献

To develop novel biodegradable biomedical materials, polylactide-grafted dextrans (Dex-g-PLA)s having various lengths, numbers of graft chains and sugar units were synthesized using the trimethylsilyl (TMS) protection method. To explore the possibility of using Dex-g-PLA as a biomedical soft-material, the contact angle, cell attachment and protein adsorption properties of the films prepared from these biodegradable and amphiphilic graft co-polymers were investigated. The poly-L-lactide (PLLA) film did not absorb water at all because of its high hydrophobicity, while the graft co-polymer films started immediately to swell after immersion in PBS. The percentage of water absorption at equilibrium increased with increasing sugar unit content. The receding contact angle of the Dex-g-PLA films against water was smaller than that of the PLLA film. The receding contact angle of Dex-g-PLA films against water decreased with increasing the sugar unit content. The top surface of the Dex-g-PLA film was suggested to be covered with hydrophilic Dex segments by means of annealing in water and to afford the wettable surface. Such a wettable surface led to the suppression of cell attachment and protein adsorption onto the film.  相似文献

STUDY OBJECTIVES: There is a long-standing controversy surrounding the existence of dream experiences during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. Previous studies have not answered the question whether this "NREM dream" originates from the NREM sleep mechanism because the subject might simply be recalling experiences from the preceding rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. METHODS: We scheduled 11 healthy men to repeat 20-minute nap trials separated by 40-minute periods of enforced wakefulness across a period of 3 days. At the end of the nap trial, each participant answered questions regarding the formal aspects of his dream experiences during the nap trial, using the structured interviews. RESULTS: We obtained a total of 172 dream reports after naps containing REM sleep (REM naps) and 563 after naps consisting of only NREM sleep (NREM naps). Dream reports from NREM naps were less remarkable in quantity, vividness, and emotion than those from REM naps and were obtained more frequently during the morning hours when the occurrences of REM sleep were highest. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the polysomnographic manifestations of REM sleep are not required for dream experiences but that the mechanisms driving REM sleep alter experiences during NREM sleep in the morning. A subcortical activation similar to REM sleep may occur in human NREM sleep during the morning when REM sleep is most likely to occur, resulting in dream experiences during NREM sleep.  相似文献

TT virus (TTV) is a newly discovered virus from a patient with post-transfusion hepatitis. We investigated the frequency and pathogenesis of TTV infection in children. A semi-nested PCR assay was used to amplify TTV-DNA in serum samples from 254 ambulatory children without liver disease, 20 with hepatitis of unknown etiology, and 18 transfusion recipients or hemophiliacs. In positive samples, TTV-DNA was quantified by real-time quantitative PCR using a fluorescent probe. We detected TTV-DNA in 20% of children with hepatitis of unknown etiology, which was not statistically different from the 23% prevalence in ambulatory children. In transfusion recipients or hemophiliacs, the frequency was higher (50%) than that in ambulatory children (P = 0.01). Among ambulatory children, TTV-DNA was frequently detected in children with acute gastroenteritis (36%). TTV-DNA was detected in 10% of the infants under 6 months old, and 20% of the children from 7 to 12  months old. The prevalence was constant after the age of 1 year; however, the copy number of TTV-DNA was significantly higher in children under 1 year of age (mean: 105.4 versus 103.8 copies/ml, P= 0.008). Finally, TTV-DNA was quantified serially in three children with chronic hepatitis who were positive for TTV-DNA. The presence or amount of TTV-DNA was unrelated to the serum alanine aminotransferase level. These results indicate that TTV infection is common in children. The larger quantity of TTV-DNA in infants and the high prevalence of TTV in children of all ages suggest that TTV may be transmitted in early childhood.
