Alterations in the growth plate associated with growth modulation by sustained compression or distraction 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Sustained mechanical load is known to modulate endochondral growth in the immature skeleton, but it is not known what causes this mechanical sensitivity. This study aimed to quantify alterations in parameters of growth plate performance associated with mechanically altered growth rate. Vertebral and proximal tibial growth plates of immature rats and cattle, and rabbit (proximal tibia only) were subjected to different magnitudes of sustained loading, which altered growth rates by up to 53%. The numbers of proliferative chondrocytes, their rate of proliferation, and the amount of chondrocytic enlargement occurring in the hypertrophic zone were quantified. It was found that reduced growth rate with compression and increased growth rate with distraction were associated with corresponding changes in the number of proliferative chondrocytes per unit width of growth plate, and in the final (maximum) chondrocytic height in the hypertrophic zone (overall correlation coefficients 0.38 and 0.56 respectively). According to multiple linear regression coefficients for these two variables (0.72 and 1.39 respectively), chondrocytic enlargement made a greater contribution to altered growth rates. 相似文献

Approximately 70% of the gene responsible for the most common form of
autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease ( PKD1 ) is replicated in
several highly homologous copies located more proximally on chromosome 16.
We recently have described a novel technique for mutation detection in the
duplicated region of PKD1 that circumvents the difficulties posed by these
homologs. We have used this method to identify two patients with a nearly
identical cluster of base pair substitutions in exon 23. Since pseudogenes
are known to be reservoirs for mutation via gene conversion events for a
number of other diseases, we decided to test whether these sequence
differences in PKD1 could have arisen as a result of this mechanism. Using
changes in restriction digest patterns, we were able to show that these
sequence substitutions are also present in N23HA, a rodent-human somatic
cell hybrid that contains only the PKD1 homologs. Moreover, these changes
were also detected in total DNA from several affected and unaffected
individuals that did not harbor this mutation in their PKD1 gene copy. This
is the first example of gene conversion in PKD1 , and our findings
highlight the importance of using gene-specific reagents in defining PKD1
mutations.

Data from the Cantonese Communicative Development Inventory (CCDI) is used to review the phonological preferences of younger (16–22 months) and older (23–30 month) groups of children in the lexical items they are reported to be able to say. Analogous results to those found for English emerge from the Cantonese data: the younger group display selectivity in the initial consonants of words they say, and their preferences accord with developmental tendencies in Cantonese phonology. From children whose scores fell below the tenth percentile of the CCDI, a subset were followed up 1 year later and their linguistic progress evaluated. Only a proportion of these children were below still below the tenth percentile for vocabulary at follow‐up. Their lexical immaturities were accompanied by limited phonetic abilities. In an attempt to determine the relative contributions to adrenocortical hyperactivity in depression of agitation, delusions, and melancholic subtype, we measured cortisol levels before and after dexamethasone in 93 unipolar major depressed inpatients. Stepwise multiple regression showed that agitation predicted 22% of the variance in a.m. cortisol level after dexamethasone. Addition of the variables melancholia and delusionality to the regression model accounted for 27% and 34%, respectively, of the variance in the same cortisol variable. Age, illness severity, and weight loss added no further significant predictive value. Age, weight loss, and illness severity did affect cortisol levels when examined separately from the other variables. Rate of nonsuppression on the dexamethasone suppression test (DST) differed between the nonmelancholic major depressive group and any other group with melancholia. These results suggest why some discrepancies may exist between studies of the DST in delusional depression and indicate that agitation merits careful assessment in future studies of DST response. 相似文献

The specific role of different parietal regions to episodic retrieval is a topic of intense debate. According to the Attention to Memory (AtoM) model, dorsal parietal cortex (DPC) mediates top-down attention processes guided by retrieval goals, whereas ventral parietal cortex (VPC) mediates bottom-up attention processes captured by the retrieval output or the retrieval cue. This model also hypothesizes that the attentional functions of DPC and VPC are similar for memory and perception. To investigate this last hypothesis, we scanned participants with event-related fMRI whereas they performed memory and perception tasks, each comprising an orienting phase (top-down attention) and a detection phase (bottom-up attention). The study yielded two main findings. First, consistent with the AtoM model, orienting-related activity for memory and perception overlapped in DPC, whereas detection-related activity for memory and perception overlapped in VPC. The DPC overlap was greater in the left intraparietal sulcus, and the VPC overlap in the left TPJ. Around overlapping areas, there were differences in the spatial distribution of memory and perception activations, which were consistent with trends reported in the literature. Second, both DPC and VPC showed stronger connectivity with medial-temporal lobe during the memory task and with visual cortex during the perception task. These findings suggest that, during memory tasks, some parietal regions mediate similar attentional control processes to those involved in perception tasks (orienting in DPC vs. detection in VPC), although on different types of information (mnemonic vs. sensory). 相似文献
