The aim of the study was to determine objective radiological signs of danger to life in survivors of manual strangulation and to establish a radiological scoring system for the differentiation between life-threatening and non-life-threatening strangulation by dividing the cross section of the neck into three zones (superficial, middle and deep zone). Forensic pathologists classified 56 survivors of strangulation into life-threatening and non-life-threatening cases by history and clinical examination alone, and two blinded radiologists evaluated the MRIs of the neck. In 15 cases, strangulation was life-threatening (27%), compared with 41 cases in which strangulation was non-life-threatening (73%). The best radiological signs on MRI to differentiate between the two groups were intramuscular haemorrhage/oedema, swelling of platysma and intracutaneous bleeding (all p = 0.02) followed by subcutaneous bleeding (p = 0.034) and haemorrhagic lymph nodes (p = 0.04), all indicating life-threatening strangulation. The radiological scoring system showed a sensitivity and specificity of ≈70% for life-threatening strangulation, when at least two neck zones were affected. Physiological cell death is crucial for matching defined cellular populations within the central nervous system. Whereas the time course of developmental cell death in the central nervous system is well analyzed, information about its precise spatial patterning is scarce. Yet, the latter one is needed to appraise its contribution to circuit formation and refinement. Here, we document that during normal cerebellar development, dying Purkinje cells were highly localized within the vermal midline and in a lobule specific, parasagittal pattern along the whole mediolateral axis. In addition, single hot spots of cell death localized to the caudal declive and ventral lobule IX within the posterolateral fissure. These hot spots of dying Purkinje cells partly overlapped with gaps within the Purkinje cell layer which supports the classification of different gaps based on histological and molecular criteria, i.e., midline gap, patchy gaps, and raphes. Areas characterized by a high incidence of Purkinje cell death and gaps colocalize with known molecular and functional boundaries within the cerebellar cortex. The recent discovery of a number of genes involved in familial forms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) has moved the use of model genetic organisms to the frontline. One avenue holding tremendous potential to find therapies against human diseases is the use of intact living systems where complex biological processes can be examined. Despite key differences that need to be taken into account when using invertebrate models such as Drosophila, there are many advantages offered by this system. The rapid generation time and the ability to easily generate transgenic animals together with the variety of genetic tools to control temporal and spatial expression of any given gene makes the fly model a very attractive system to study human neurodegenerative disorders. In this review, we analyze how the use of fruit flies has revealed to be an excellent tool providing valuable insights into the current understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the progression of PD. 相似文献
