Flow cytometric analysis of the DNA content of thymomas

In this study, the prognostic value of determining the nuclear DNA content of thymomas by flow cytometry was evaluated. Of a total 31 resected thymomas, 10 (32%) showed DNA aneuploidy, the presence of which was significantly correlated with an advanced clinical stage of disease. The patients with an aneuploid tumor had a poorer prognosis than those with a diploid tumor, demonstrating a survival rate of 50% at 7 postoperative years, which was considerably less favorable than that of the patients with a diploid tumor, being 100% in the same period (p<0.05). Moreover, patients with a high DNA index (DI), i.e., a DI1.5, tended to have a poorer prognosis than those with a low DI. These findings indicated that the DNA content can be an important prognostic index in patients with thymomas.     

Parkinsonism induced by atypical neuroleptics in a patient with severe iron deficiency.

Although still controversial, iron deficiency has been indicated as one of the risk factors for developing neuroleptic-induced extrapyramidal symptoms (EPSs), including akathisia, dystonia, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Here we report our experience of iron supplementation and alternating neuroleptics for treating Parkinsonism in a schizophrenic female patient having severe iron deficient anemia.     

Histology-Based Assessment of Sonazoid-Enhanced Ultrasonography for the Diagnosis of Liver Metastasis

This retrospective study aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound with Sonazoid (S-CEUS) for liver metastasis. We enrolled in this study 98 patients with 148 histologically proven liver lesions, with 121 metastases and 27 non-metastases. The S-CEUS technique showed sensitivity in 95.0% (115 of 121), specificity in 44.4% (12 of 27) and accuracy in 85.8% (127 of 148) for the diagnosis of metastasis. Higher body mass index had a negative influence on the positive predictive value and accuracy, and a greater depth of the lesion had a negative influence on the accuracy. The management was changed in 8 patients (8.2%) because of S-CEUS findings. In conclusion, the addition of S-CEUS may offer a great benefit by improvement of the quality of diagnosis and management for patients with cancer who have a tentative diagnosis of liver metastasis by contrast-enhanced computed tomography.     

Overexpression of cyclin‐dependent kinase 4 protein in extramammary Paget's disease

Cyclin‐dependent kinase 4 and 6 (CDK4/6) plays an important role in cell cycle progression, and the CDK4/6–cyclin D1 complex controls the cell cycle transition from G₁ phase to S phase. CDK4 is enhanced in several types of cancers and CDK4/6 inhibitors attenuate the proliferation of several types of cancer in vitro/in vivo. The purpose of our study was to investigate the expression pattern of CDK4 and evaluate its clinical importance in extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD). Almost all EMPD tissues were positive for CDK4, and metastatic lesions had a similar immunostaining intensity to primary lesions. In addition, CDK4 protein levels were positively correlated with those of cyclin D1 protein. Taken together, CDK4 may assume a crucial role in EMPD progression.
