The authors report on the relationship of early adolescent substance use (up to the time of the 16th birthday) to educational-vocational performance in the early adulthood of 612 African-American urban subjects. Voluminous prospective data were available on the behavior, test performance, and families of 612 urban African-American subjects, from birth up to 7 years of age. Scarcer prospective data were available for school performance during later years of school. Control variables were derived from these data to determine the amount of variance in each dependent educational-vocational outcome variable that was accounted for, independently of the amount of variance accounted for by early substance use. Generation and survival of midbrain dopaminergic (DA) neurons were investigated using tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunocytochemistry combined with tritiated thymidine autoradiography at appropriate anatomical levels throughout the anteroposterior (A/P) axes of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA). The wild-type (+/+) and homozygous weaver (wv/wv) mice used here were the offspring of pregnant dams injected with the radioactive precursor when the mesencephalic neurons were being produced (gestational days 11-15). Data reveal that, at postnatal day 90, depletion of TH-stained cells in the wv/wv presented an A/P pattern of increasing severity and, therefore, the DA cells located in posterior parts of the SNc or the VTA appear to be more vulnerable than the settled anterior neurons. When the time of neuron origin is inferred for each level of these cell groups, it is found that the neurogenesis span is similar for both experimental groups, although significant deficits in the frequency of wv/wv late-generated neurons were observed in any level considered. On the other hand, it has been found that TH-positive neurons were settled along the extent of the SNc and the VTA following precise and differential neurogenetic gradients. Thus, the acute rostrocaudal increase in the proportion of late-generated neurons detected in both+/+DA-cell groups is disturbed in the weaver homozygotes due to the indicated A/P depletion.  相似文献

Corporations have engaged in sponsorship of health management programs and, more recently, disease management programs to facilitate healthy and productive work environments. The purpose of this review is to examine the health and financial outcomes from these corporate-sponsored disease management programs. This article focuses on seven diseases or chronic conditions (arthritis, asthma, cancer, depression, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and migraine) that potentially impact employee productivity (both in time away from work and in loss of effectiveness at work) and health status including medical and pharmaceutical utilization and costs.Corporate-sponsored disease management programs typically focus on education and screening for selected diseases or chronic conditions. Partnerships have been formed with health plans and third-party program providers to reach employees with interventions and treatment. The typical outcome measures from these programs have primarily been clinical indicators and medical utilization. Measures of productivity need to be incorporated as important outcome measures for disease management programs.The estimated financial opportunity for the corporation is a reflection of the cost differential for a given disease and the prevalence of that disease within the employee population. Primary diseases, chronic conditions, and health risks contribute to increased medical utilization and decreased productivity within the corporation. Promoting programs that focus on the whole person, including health risks, chronic conditions, and diseases, will likely increase the possibility of success in helping the employee to better self-manage their health conditions and consequently provide gains for both the individual and the corporation.  相似文献

The present study had two aims: (1) To assess heart rate variability (HRV) along with non-specific autonomic measures (used in earlier studies), before and after two minutes of the head stand. (2) To compare changes in two categories of subjects, i.e., those who practiced the headstand in a traditional way (without any support) and those who used the support of the wall (a present day adaptation). The subjects were forty male volunteers (age range 19 to 36 years), with twenty subjects under each category. The following changes were significant after the practice, compared to values at baseline. (i) Both categories had an increase in the power of the low frequency component (LF) and a decrease in the high frequency component (HF) of the HRV spectrum, increased LF/HF ratio, and decreased heart rate. (ii) Subjects who practiced the head stand with the support of a wall showed reduced finger plethysmogram amplitude suggesting increased sympathetic vasomotor tone. (iii) Practicing the headstand without support was associated with an increase in the skin conductance level, suggestive of increased sympathetic sudomotor tone. Hence, both categories showed similar changes in the HRV components though changes in sympathetic vasomotor and sudomotor activity were different. These changes suggest sympathetic activation, irrespective of the method of practice.  相似文献

Summary: Purpose: We wished to identify immunocytochemically the distribution of proopiomelanocortin-related peptides in the hippocampal formation of patients with epilepsy.
Methods: Surgical hippocampal specimens from temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients and autopsy control tissue were examined immunocytochemically for ACTH, α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) and α-endorphin.
Results: There was a dense distribution of ACTH-immunoreactive neurons in the hippocampal formation of patients with mesial TLE syndrome (MTLE). These hippocampal specimens showed significant cell loss. ACTH-positive neurons were most prominent in the subiculum, with scattered ACTH-immunoreactive neuronal elements distributed in the cornu ammonis fields and hilus. Light ACTH immunoreactivity was detected in the tumor-related epileptic hippocampal specimens, which showed minimal cell loss. Although autopsy control tissue from the hypothalamus showed intense ACTH staining patterns in cells and fibers, there was little or no ACTH immunoreactivity in the autopsy hippocampal tissue. The expression of ACTH immunoreactive elements was correlated with patterns of cell loss. No α-MSH- or β-endorphin-immunoreactive neurons were detected in any of the hippocampal specimens.
Conclusions: ACTH has anticonvulsant properties, and its novel expression in the glutamatergic subicular neurons, which provide the main outflow of the hippocampal formation, may represent an attempt by the damaged hippocampal circuit to restore the balance of excitatory/inhibitory neurotransmission in TLE.  相似文献

It has been speculated that exposure to the chronic stress of racism contributes to the high rates of hypertension among African Americans. Social support may buffer the effects of stress on cardiovascular (CV) health by attenuating stress-induced CV responses that have been linked to hypertension. In this study we investigated the effects of racism and social support on CV reactivity in African American women. Participants showed greater increases in CV and emotional responses while responding and listening to racist provocation. Augmented blood pressure (BP) persisted through recovery following racial stress. Participants receiving no support showed the greatest increases in anger during racist provocation. No significant effects were seen for support on CV reactivity. These results provide some of the first evidence that interactive confrontation with racism elicits significant increases in CV reactivity and emotional distress. Furthermore, individuals receiving less support may be at greater risk for the potentially health-damaging effects of racial stress. These findings may have significant implications for the health of African Americans.  相似文献
