A study was conducted to identify constituents that might be responsible for analgesic and antiinflammatory conditions. Tasumatrol B, 1,13-diacetyl-10-deacetylbaccatin III (10-DAD) and 4-deacetylbaccatin III (4-DAB) were isolated from the bark extract of Taxus wallichiana Zucc. All the compounds were assessed for analgesic and antiinflammatory activities using an acetic acid-induced writhing model, a hot-plate test, a carrageenan-induced paw oedema model, a cotton-pellet oedema model and in vitro lipoxygenase inhibitory assay. All the compounds, especially tasumatrol B, revealed significant analgesic activity in comparison to a saline group based on an acetic acid-induced model. Similarly all of the test compounds, particularly tasumatrol B, showed significant antiinflammatory activity. However, all the compounds failed to exhibit any considerable activity in of the hot-plate test and the in vitro lipoxygenase inhibitory assay. This study has highlighted the potential of tasumatrol B to be further explored as a new lead compound for the management of pain and inflammation, one that has been discovered by scientific validation of the traditional medicinal use of T. wallichiana Zucc. 相似文献

Background and aimsPotential role of health literacy in determining adherence to COVID-19 preventive behavior, pharmacological, and lifestyle management among diagnosed patients of chronic diseases during nationwide lockdown is inadequately investigated.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted from May–August 2020 among diagnosed patients of chronic diseases residing in a COVID-19 hotspot of urban Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and availing health services from primary care facility. Telephonic interviews of participants were conducted to determine their health literacy using HLS-EU-Q47 questionnaire, adherence to COVID-19 preventive behaviour as per World Health Organization recommendations, and compliance to prescribed pharmacological and physical activity recommendations for chronic disease.ResultsAll the 605 diagnosed patients of chronic diseases availing services from primary care facility were contacted for the study, yielding response rate of 68% with 412 agreeing to participate. Insufficient health literacy was observed for 65.8% participants. Only about half of participants had scored above median for COVID-19 awareness (55.1%) and preventive behavior (45.1%). Health literacy was observed to be significant predictor of COVID-19 awareness [aOR: 3.53 (95% CI: 1.81–6.88)]; COVID-19 preventive behavior [aOR: 2.06, 95%CI; 1.14–3.69] and compliance to pharmacological management [aOR: 3.05; 95% CI: 1.47–6.35] but not for physical activity.ConclusionCOVID-19 awareness, preventive behavior, and compliance to pharmacological management is associated with health literacy among patients of chronic disease availing services from primary health facility. Focusing on health literacy could thus be an essential strategic intervention yielding long term benefits. 相似文献

Purpose: The arabinoxylan from Ispaghula (Plantago ovata) husk has been proven scientifically as potential excipient. However, toxicity study of the arabinoxylan is still lacking. The present study was done to investigate the acute toxicity of arabinoxylan in two animal species. Methods: The mice were exposed to (1?g/kg, 5?g/kg, 10?g/kg) and rabbits (2.5?g/kg, 5?g/kg) of arabinoxylan orally and observed for a period of 14 days. On day 15 hematology, serum biochemistry and necropsy was performed in mice relative organ weight calculated and histological examination was carried out. Primary dermal and eye irritation tests were carried out. Cardiac effects of isolated arabinoxylan were studied on frog heart. Results: The acute administration of the arabinoxylan did not produce mortality or significant changes in, water and food consumption however body weights of mice and rabbits decreased initially with a gradual increase till day 14. Internal organs relative weights were found to be normal. Hematological biochemical and histopathological examination did not show any significant (p?0.05) change. Primary dermal and eye irritation was not observed in treated rabbits. No change in heart rate and vascular contraction was observed in frog heart. Conclusion: This study has shown that acute administration of arabinoxylan may be safe. 相似文献

Biomineralization plays a key role in modifying the geological properties of soil, thereby stabilizing it against wind erosion, especially in areas characterized by harsh weather and harsh soil (calcareous and arid); i.e. Arabic Gulf region. Among soil microorganisms, ureolytic bacteria are capable of modifying soil characteristics and thus, inducing biomineralization. This research investigated the occurrence and diversity of ureolytic bacteria in Qatari soils, specifically to study their acquired potential to adapt to harsh conditions exhibiting ureolytic activity. Soil samples were collected from various locations in Qatar and were used to isolate the indigenous ureolytic bacteria. It was noticed that most of the ureolytic bacteria in Qatari soil belong to the genus Bacillus mainly Bacillus cereus. Identification and differentiation of 18 ureolytic isolates were performed using MALDI-TOF MS techniques while ribotyping (16S rRNA) molecular technique was used mainly for 6 selected strains. This study not only shows the diversity of species of ureolytic bacteria in Qatari soil but also shows the diversity in their protein profiles, which confirms that bacteria have adapted well to the harsh environment. In addition, the strains were evaluated based on a newly modified screening method in this work; i.e. production of arbitrary urease activity (AUA). Thus, the strains showing the highest AUA, exhibited the highest capability to produce urease enzymes induced by urea. Analysis of calcium carbonate precipitation utilizing SEM-EDX showed that the ureolytic bacteria also play a significant role in the precipitation of minerals such as CaCO3, in the presence of urea in soil. Therefore, this research showed a high occurrence of indigenous Bacillus bacteria in Qatari soil that can perform biomineralization and thus can be helpful, if properly stimulated, in enhancing soil stabilization, and for other local applications as well, since they are adapted to these soil and weather conditions.Biomineralization plays a key role in modifying the geological properties of soil, thereby stabilizing it against wind erosion, especially in areas characterized by harsh weather and harsh soil (calcareous and arid); i.e. Arabic Gulf region. 相似文献

A 48-year-old man presented with a traumatic arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in the left popliteal space, due to a bullet injury 20 years back. A computed tomographic (CT) angiography revealed an AVF in the left popliteal space with an associated large iliac vein aneurysm (9.2 x 9.0 cms). Primary repair of the AVF was done. A Doppler scan showed marked reduction in the size of the aneurysm, 4 months after surgery. Cases associated with a venous aneurysm distant from the site of AVF are rare and there are only 7 cases reported in the international literature. 相似文献

Paget's disease of bone is a common metabolic bone disease in most of the European countries. The disease has distinct geographical distribution being rare in Asia. We report Paget's disease in a 70 years old Pakistani male who presented with history of pain in right leg with difficulty in walking for the last 5 months. Plain X-ray raised suspicion of Paget's disease of bone. Technetium-99m MDP bone scan showed involvement of multiple bones. Bone biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. This case illustrates that Paget's disease of bone does exist in Pakistan. 相似文献

The incidence of ectopic pregnancy has increased in recent years and now is around one in 100 pregnancies. However, the incidence of live twin ectopic pregnancy in a spontaneous conception is still quite rare. A 34-year-old gravida 3, para 0 presented in the Early Pregnancy Unit with a positive pregnancy test, lower abdominal pain and vaginal spotting. Her quantitative serum Beta hCG was high, and the transvaginal scan revealed an empty uterine cavity with a twin ectopic pregnancy in the left adnexa with cardiac activity in both embryos. The patient was taken for laparoscopic surgery and a left ampullary twin pregnancy was confirmed. She underwent a left salpingectomy and is well on a one-year follow-up. This case report discusses the incidence, diagnoses and treatment of ectopic pregnancies in general. 相似文献

The conventional model of intestinal epithelial architecture describes a unidirectional tissue organizational hierarchy with stem cells situated at the crypt base and daughter cells proliferating and terminally differentiating as they progress along the vertical (crypt–luminal) axis. In this model, the fate of a cell that has left the niche is determined and its lifespan limited. Evidence is accumulating to suggest that stem cell control and daughter cell fate determination is not solely an intrinsic, cell autonomous property but is heavily influenced by the microenvironment including paracrine, mesenchymal, and endogenous epithelial morphogen gradients. Recent research suggests that in intestinal homeostasis, stem cells transit reversibly between states of variable competence in the niche. Furthermore, selective pressures that disrupt the homeostatic balance, such as intestinal inflammation or morphogen dysregulation, can cause committed progenitor cells and even some differentiated cells to regain stem cell properties. Importantly, it has been recently shown that this disruption of cell fate determination can lead to somatic mutation and neoplastic transformation of cells situated outside the crypt base stem cell niche. This paper reviews the exciting developments in the study of stem cell dynamics in homeostasis, intestinal regeneration, and carcinogenesis, and explores the implications for human disease and cancer therapies. © 2015 Authors.
