PURPOSE: To determine the antioxidant role of vitamin E (VE) (10 mg/kg/day) against radiation-induced cataract in lens after total-cranium irradiation of rats with a single dose of 5 Gy. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups. Group 1 did not receive VE or irradiation but received both 0.1 ml physiologic saline intraperitoneally and sham irradiation (control group). Group 2 received to total cranium 5 Gy of gamma irradiation as a single dose (RT group) plus 0.1 ml physiologic saline intraperitoneally. Group 3 received irradiation to total cranium plus 10 mg/kg/day VE (RT+VE group). The rats were irradiated using a cobalt-60 teletherapy unit. Chylack's cataract classification (1) was used in this study. At the end of 10 days, the rats were killed and their eyes were enucleated to measure the antioxidant enzymes (the activity of superoxide dismutase [SOD], glutathione peroxidase [GSH-Px]) and lipid peroxidation level (malondialdehyde [MDA]). RESULTS: While grade 1 cataract development was detectable in seven rats in the RT group, it was detectable only in two rats in the RT+VE group, whereas none of the rats in the control group exhibited any biomicroscopic change in their lenses. MDA level and GSH-Px activity in the rat lens in the RT group was significantly higher than in the control group. SOD activity in the RT group was lower than in the control group. The activity of SOD and GSH-Px enzymes was higher in the RT+VE group, but MDA level was lower in the RT+VE group when compared with the RT group. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin E has a protective effect on radiation-induced cataract by decreasing oxidative stress. 相似文献

There is currently substantial clinical interest in zinc (Zn) as a protective agent against radiation-related normal tissue injury. To further assess this drug's potential, the effect of Zn was studied in rats using a radiation-induced skin injury model. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups. Group 1 received neither Zn nor irradiation (control group). Group 2 received 30 Gy of gamma irradiation as a single dose to the right hind legs of the rats (RT Group). Groups 3 and 4 received the same irradiation plus 5 mg/kg/day Zn (RT+5 Zn group) or 10 mg/kg/day Zn orally (RT+10 Zn group), respectively. The rats were irradiated using a cobalt-60 teletherapy unit. Acute skin reactions were assessed every three days by two independent radiation oncology experts. At the endpoint of the study, light-microscopic findings were assessed by two independent expert pathology physicians. Clinically and histopathologically, irradiation increased dermatitis when compared with the control group (p < 0.05). The severity of radiodermatitis of the rats in the RT+5 Zn and RT+10 Zn groups was significantly lower than in the RT group (p < 0.05); radiodermatitis was seen earlier in the RT group than in the other groups (p < 0.05). Zn was found to be efficacious in preventing epidermal atrophy, dermal degeneration such as edema and collagen fiber loss, and hair follicle atrophy. The most protection for radiation dermatitis was observed in the RT+10 Zn group. It would be worthwhile studying the effects of zinc sulphate supplements in radiation-treated cancer patients, in the hope of reducing radiation-induced toxicity. 相似文献

PURPOSE: To evaluate the functions of the magnocellular and parvocellular pathways in strabismic amblyopia. METHODS: Visual evoked potentials produced by achromatic and chromatic stimuli in 14 children with strabismic amblyopia were compared with those in 14 age-matched control subjects. The achromatic sine-wave grating with low spatial frequency was used to stimulate the magnocellular pathway, whereas the parvocellular pathway was stimulated by the chromatic sine-wave grating (isoluminant red-green) with low and high spatial frequencies. RESULTS: When the achromatic stimuli with low spatial frequency were used, the latencies of the N1 and P1 components and the amplitude of the N1-P1 complex were similar in the children with strabismic amblyopia and the control subjects. There also were no differences between the amblyopic and non-amblyopic eyes of the children with strabismic amblyopia. When chromatic stimuli with low and high spatial frequencies were used, the latencies of the N1 and P1 components were significantly longer and the amplitude of the N1-P1 complex was significantly smaller in the children with strabismic amblyopia than in the control group. When the amblyopic and non-amblyopic eyes of the children with strabismic amblyopia were compared, the latencies of the N1 and P1 components were longer and the amplitude of the N1-P1 complex was smaller in the amblyopic eyes. CONCLUSION: In strabismic amblyopia, the cells in the parvocellular pathway may be more involved, whereas the magnocellular pathway may be relatively spared. 相似文献

We describe an access technique that we have used in 150 nephrostomy and biliary drainage procedures and for access to some abscesses and viscera. The system provides safe coaxial access with a 22-gauge removable hub needle, which then acts as a guide wire and is replaced by an 18-gauge cannula. A major advantage is that only one guide wire is used (0.038-inch) for the entire drainage procedure. No significant complications have occurred to date with this method. 相似文献

Despite the widespread use of interventional radiologic techniques, there has been reluctance to apply these to the spleen. Concern for bleeding and difficulty in negotiating around the colon and pleura have limited its use. The authors report their experience with interventional radiology of the spleen in 35 cases, including percutaneous biopsy (n = 5), diagnostic and therapeutic fluid aspiration (n = 14), and catheter drainage of abscesses (n = 9), hematomas (n = 2), intrasplenic pancreatic pseudocysts (n = 2), and necrotic tumor (n = 1). Transsplenic fluid aspiration and biopsy of the pancreas and adrenal gland were performed as well (n = 2). All procedures were performed under computed tomographic or ultrasound guidance. Biopsies were performed with 22- or 20-gauge needles only; no complications were encountered. Diagnoses included primary and secondary malignancies and an infectious process. Drainages were successful in 11 of 14 patients; pleural effusions occurred in two cases, but neither required specific therapy. Interventional radiologic procedures in the spleen are feasible, and the authors discuss methods to promote their safe application. 相似文献

Musculoskeletal neoplasms after intraarterial chemotherapy: correlation of MR images with pathologic specimens 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The most accurate prognostic indicator in patients with musculoskeletal sarcomas is the percentage of tumor necrosis after intraarterial chemotherapy. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was evaluated to determine its ability to indicate the percentage of necrosis in musculoskeletal neoplasms after treatment. Fourteen patients with musculoskeletal neoplasms underwent treatment protocols including intraarterial chemotherapy (n = 14), radiation therapy (n = 6), and systemic chemotherapy (n = 14). All patients underwent MR imaging before and after treatment, and all underwent either limb salvage surgery (n = 8) or amputation (n = 6) within 1 week of the last MR examination. Standard unehanced spin-echo T1-, spin-density-, and T2-weighted MR sequences were used. The MR images were compared with the pathologic specimens. On T2-weighted images, the signal intensities of viable tumor, tumor necrosis, edema, hemorrhage, and necrosis overlapped. With the unenhanced spin-echo technique, MR imaging cannot be used to predict the percentage of tumor necrosis in musculoskeletal neoplasms after intraarterial chemotherapy. 相似文献

Anti-Sc1 was detected in a gravida-2 patient at 12 weeks' gestation. At 29 weeks, the antibody was found to be of the IgG3 subclass with a titer of 16, score 36, by the indirect antiglobulin test, and it produced 7 percent lysis by antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) assay, a finding that suggested an unaffected fetus. The titer remained constant throughout the pregnancy, as did the IgG subclass and activity in the ADCC assay. At delivery of the full-term infant, the cord hemoglobin was 13.5 g per dL and the direct antiglobulin test was positive (3+) with anti-IgG. The infant did not require transfusion. A sample taken 9 weeks after delivery showed 44 percent lysis in the ADCC assay. The anti-Sc1 titer was 32, score 65. 相似文献
