This study describes the use of highly versatile, lithographically defined magnetic microdiscs. Gold covered magnetic microdiscs are used in both radiosensitizing cancer cells, acting as intracellular emitters of secondary electrons during radiotherapy, and as well as inducing mechanical damage by exerting a mechanical torque when exposed to a rotating magnetic field. This study reveals that lithographically defined microdiscs with a uniform size of 2 microns in diameter highly increase the DNA damage and reduce the glioblastoma colony formation potential compared to conventional radiation therapy. Furthermore, the addition of mechanical disruption mediated by the magnetic component of the discs increased the efficiency of brain cancer cell killing.

Moyamoya syndrome is a chronic, progressive occlussion of cerebrovascular arteries that leads to the development of characteristic collateral vessels. It is usually accompanied with sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies. We report a 7-year-old boy, who admitted to our clinic with headache, diagnosed as moyamoya syndrome associated with sickle cell trait. To date, two such cases have been reported in the literature. A 6-month-old male infant with hereditary spherocytosis (HS) who was the first child of a cousin marriage is presented. The patient had splenomegaly and severe anaemia. Examination of the peripheral blood smear revealed spherocytes and the osmotic fragility of red blood cells was greatly increased. Physical examination of the parents revealed that both parents had mild anaemia, jaundice and splenomegaly. Their peripheral blood smears showed spherocytes and a few acanthocytes. Osmotic fragility of red blood cells of both parents were increased. Red cell membrane electrophoresis indicated a deficiency of ankyrin in the propositus; mild deficiency was also detected in both parents. Electrophoretic patterns of red cell membrane proteins suggested that the child was homozygous for the dominant form of HS associated with ankyrin deficiency, while both parents had the simple dominant form of the disease. Red blood cell transfusions were given to the patient starting at the age of 1 month until splenectomy was performed at the age of 1 year that resulted in complete haematological response. This observation indicates that homozygosity for dominant type of HS associated with ankyrin deficiency is life compatible and splenectomy may cure the anaemia.  相似文献

Amerotyphlops brongersmianus (Vanzolini, 1976) is distributed in Brazil from the Atlantic Rainforest to the Cerrado biome. Only few studies have focused on the gross anatomy, reproductive organs, and histological data of typhlopids. We accessed information from the anatomy of gonads of 95 individuals collected at different months in the Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. This included histological sections of the testes, ductus deferens and sexual segment of kidney (SSK) in males, and oviducts in females, from which fecundity was determined. Results revealed a correlation between gross morphology and histology of the reproductive system. Testes volume increased during spermatogenesis, and the ductus deferens diameter increased with the presence of spermatozoa. Additionally, changes occurred in kidney morphology, which showed a smooth or rough surface, the latter corresponding to the development of the SSK. Spermatozoa were found inside the lumen of the SSK of some males. Females lacked left oviducts and showed changes in morphological and histological aspects of the right oviducts throughout the year. In summer and spring the uterus showed undeveloped structures, while during winter this organ showed conspicuously developed glands and appeared pleated and opaque upon gross examination. The infundibulum was pleated in most females throughout the year and one female had spermatozoon in a receptacle located in the posterior infundibulum. In spring, this organ was enlarged compared to winter, with a thinner epithelium. Fecundity corresponded to 7–11 eggs.  相似文献
