Agriculture is a specialized form of symbiosis that is known to have evolved in only four animal groups: humans, bark beetles, termites, and ants. Here, we reconstruct the major evolutionary transitions that produced the five distinct agricultural systems of the fungus-growing ants, the most well studied of the nonhuman agriculturalists. We do so with reference to the first fossil-calibrated, multiple-gene, molecular phylogeny that incorporates the full range of taxonomic diversity within the fungus-growing ant tribe Attini. Our analyses indicate that the original form of ant agriculture, the cultivation of a diverse subset of fungal species in the tribe Leucocoprineae, evolved approximately 50 million years ago in the Neotropics, coincident with the early Eocene climatic optimum. During the past 30 million years, three known ant agricultural systems, each involving a phylogenetically distinct set of derived fungal cultivars, have separately arisen from the original agricultural system. One of these derived systems subsequently gave rise to the fifth known system of agriculture, in which a single fungal species is cultivated by leaf-cutter ants. Leaf-cutter ants evolved remarkably recently ( approximately 8-12 million years ago) to become the dominant herbivores of the New World tropics. Our analyses identify relict, extant attine ant species that occupy phylogenetic positions that are transitional between the agricultural systems. Intensive study of those species holds particular promise for clarifying the sequential accretion of ecological and behavioral characters that produced each of the major ant agricultural systems.  相似文献

Because of their potential for use in advanced electronic, nanomechanical, and other applications, large two-dimensional, carbon-rich networks have become an important target to the scientific community. Current methods for the synthesis of these materials have many limitations including lack of molecular-level control and poor diversity. Here, we present a method for the synthesis of two-dimensional carbon nanomaterials synthesized by Mo- and Cu-catalyzed cross-linking of alkyne-containing self-assembled monolayers on SiO(2) and Si(3)N(4). When deposited and cross-linked on flat surfaces, spheres, cylinders, or textured substrates, monolayers take the form of these templates and retain their structure on template removal. These nanomaterials can also be transferred from surface to surface and suspended over cavities without tearing. This approach to the synthesis of monolayer carbon networks greatly expands the chemistry, morphology, and size of carbon films accessible for analysis and device applications.  相似文献

Acute aquatic toxicity is divided into the “physical” mode governed by weak, non-covalent interactions and the “chemical” mode governed by covalent reactions. The potency of chemical interactions is typically expected to be greater than that for physical ones. This enhanced potency is called “excess” toxicity. As databases have become complex, substances thought to elicit a chemical mode reveal a lack of excess toxicity. One mechanism where the latter is prevalent is Michael-type addition. A series of α-β-unsaturated substances were evaluated for reactivity. Second order rate constants (k′) were calculated (M?1 s?1) and found to vary from >4000 to <0.0003. The electron-withdrawing capacity of the polar group impacts k′ values; the sequence is nitro > carbonyl or sulfone ? sulfoxide, nitrile or amide. When the α-carbon and/or the β-carbon of the π-system are substituted, the k′ value is sharply reduced. Excess toxicity is associated with k′ values >0.01 (M?1 s?1).  相似文献

The present work evaluated the influence of the curved segment length of artificial root canals (the arc) and the number of cycles necessary to fracture engine-driven nickel-titanium endodontic instruments. ProTaper F3 25-mm files at 250 rpm were used in two artificial canals. The artificial canals were made of stainless steel with an inner diameter of 1.04 mm, a total length of 20 mm, and arc on the ends with a radius of curvature of 6 mm. The arc length of the first tube measured 9.4 mm, and the straight part measured 10.6 mm. The second tube was 14.1 mm long, and the straight part measured 5.9 mm. We determined the fracture surface distances and the number of cycles necessary to induce fatigue fracture in the ProTaper F3 instruments. The fracture surfaces and the helical shaft of the instruments were investigated using a scanning electron microscope. The results indicated that the required number of cycles to cause a fracture was influenced by the canal arc length, the morphology of the fractured surface presented ductile characteristics, and plastic deformation in the helical shaft of the fractured instruments did not occur.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to provide molecular and mechanistic evaluation of an ischemic wound model in rats to determine if it is a valid model for human chronic wounds. Compared to acute wounds, human chronic wounds contain markedly elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases, while matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors and growth factor activity are diminished. Accordingly, tissue from ischemic and normal rat wounds were analyzed for cytokine, proteases and growth factor levels. Dorsal full thickness punch wounds were created in rats using a reproducible template. The ischemic wound group (n = 10) had six uniformly placed wounds within a bipedicled dorsal flap. The control group (n = 10) had the same wounds created without elevation of a flap. On postwound days 3, 6 and 13 wounds were excised and analyzed. Protein levels for tumor necrosis factor-alpha were determined with a rat-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, while mRNA was determined by RNase protection assay. Matrix metalloproteinases and serine protease detection was done using gelatin and casein zymography, respectively. Significant delay in healing was achieved in the ischemic group: 50% healing for control wounds was at 7 days and 11 days for ischemic wounds (p < 0.001). No significant differences between wound groups were found for interleukin-1beta, and mRNA for tumor necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-1beta. However, at day 13 ischemic wounds contained significantly more tumor necrosis factor-alpha than controls and normal skin (586 +/- 106 pg/biopsy vs. 79 +/- 7 pg/biopsy vs. 52 +/- 2 pg/biopsy; p < 0. 001). Zymography showed substantially greater quantities of matrix metalloproteinase-2, matrix metalloproteinase-9, and serine proteases in ischemic wounds. This model of delayed healing in rats shares many of the key biochemical, molecular and mechanistic characteristics found in human chronic wounds, namely elevated tumor necrosis factor-alpha and protease levels. As such, this model will likely prove to be useful in chronic wound research, particularly in developing novel therapeutics.  相似文献

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor a (PPARalpha), a member of the steroid hormone receptor superfamily, has been linked to lipid homeostasis and tumorigenesis in tissues with high expression of receptor protein. On the other hand, the role of PPARalpha in tissues with a lower expression is not well known. Here we demonstrate the localization of PPARalpha messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein in developing and adult rat testis. Additionally, we demonstrate the expression of PPARalpha protein in adult human testis. Our experiments with Northern analysis, in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry reveal a complex distribution of PPARalpha in tubular and interstitial cells of both adult and developing rat testis. The overall expression is rather low but may be modified by exogenous or endogenous stimuli. An up-regulation of PPARalpha mRNA could be observed after stimulation with FSH. In the developing rat testis, a clear expression of PPARalpha mRNA was present from the first days after birth. Additionally, PPARalpha mRNA and protein increased toward adulthood. In adult human testis PPARalpha immunoreactivity (IR) was present in interstitial Leydig cells and tubular cells. In the seminiferous epithelium of adult human testis the expression of PPARalpha-IR could be seen in meiotic spermatocytes, spermatids and myoid peritubular cells. The findings of our study suggest that PPARalpha may be involved in the regulation of growth and differentiation of tubular and interstitial cells in rat and human testis.  相似文献
