Age‐dependent renal length tables are routinely used when interpreting pediatric ultrasound. Standard renal length tables may not be accurate for HCT patients due to treatment effects on kidney size. The purpose of this study was to determine whether renal size changes from expected lengths based on age after HCT in the absence of other markers of renal disease. Four hundred and fifty renal measurements were made on 101 patients who underwent HCT between 2006 and 2010. Renal length was measured at 1–90 days pre‐HCT and at 0–30, 31–90, 91–180, and 181+ days post‐HCT. Values were compared with normal renal length tables. Average post‐HCT renal lengths were greater than established normative renal length data within every age group. Age‐adjusted average renal lengths measured at 0–30 and 31–90 days post‐transplantation were significantly larger than pre‐HCT renal lengths, with relative increases of 6.9% (4.5, 9.4; p < 0.001) and 3.9% (1.4, 6.4; p = 0.003), respectively. Average renal length did not differ significantly after 90 days post‐transplantation. HCT patients may have larger kidneys in the absence of renal disease. Awareness of the potential phenomenon of transient renal enlargement following HCT can prevent misdiagnosis and eliminate unnecessary diagnostic evaluations, interventions, anxiety, resource allocation, and financial costs. 相似文献

Dental plaque is considered to be a major etiological factor in the development of periodontal disease. Accordingly, the elimination of supra- and sub-gingival plaque and calculus is the cornerstone of periodontal therapy. Dental calculus is mineralized plaque; because it is porous, it can absorb various toxic products that can damage the periodontal tissues. Hence, calculus should be accurately detected and thoroughly removed for adequate periodontal therapy. Many techniques have been used to identify and remove calculus deposits present on the root surface. The aim of this investigation was to determine the metabolism of glyburide (GL) by microsomes prepared from placentas obtained from uncomplicated pregnancies (UP), women with gestational diabetics (GD) on a diabetic diet, and those on a diet and GL. Term placentas were obtained from UP and GD. Crude microsomal fractions were prepared by differential centrifugation and stored at -80 degrees C. The activity of the microsomes in metabolizing glyburide to the trans-4-hydroxycyclohexyl glyburide (THCGL) and cis-3-hydroxycyclohexyl glyburide (CHCGL) was determined and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS). The activity of the placental microsomes varied widely between individual placentas in each group. The median values (pmol.mg (-1) P.min (-1)) for the rates of THCGL formation were 0.34, 0.3, and 0.23 for placentas of UP, GD on diet, and GD on GL and a diet, respectively. The median values for CHCGL formation were 0.13 for UP, 0.11 for GD on a diet, and 0.10 (pmol.mg (-1) P.min (-1)) for GD on GL and a diet. A pool of individual microsomal fractions from each group was prepared and its activity revealed the following: greater formation of THCGL in the UP (0.36 +/- 0.10) than GD (0.22 +/- 0.03) ( P = 0.058 for GD on a diet, 0.04 for GD on GL). There was greater formation of CHCGL in UP (0.26 +/- 0.04) than GD (0.12 +/- 0.003) ( P < 0.006). There was no difference in GD on a diet and GD on GL plus diet. We concluded that the apparent differences in the formation of metabolites may be statistically significant, but it is unlikely to be of physiological importance, given the sample size and other experimental factors. Valuable effects of gold particles have been reported and used in complementary medicine for decades. The aim of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) against acetaminophen (APAP) induced toxicity. Albino rats were administered APAP at a dose of 2 g/kg p.o. once only. After 24 h of APAP intoxication, animals were treated with three different doses of AuNPs (50 μg/kg, 100 μg/kg, 150 μg/kg) orally or silymarin at a dose of 50 mg/kg p.o., once only. Animals of all the groups were sacrificed after 24 h of last treatment. APAP administered group showed a significant rise in the AST, ALT, SALP, LDH, cholesterol, bilirubin, albumin, urea and creatinine in serum which indicated the hepato-renal damage. A significantly enhanced LPO and a depleted level of GSH were observed in APAP intoxicated rats. Declined activities of SOD and Catalase, after acetaminophen exposure indicated oxidative stress in liver and kidney. The activities of ATPase and glucose-6-Phosphatase were significantly inhibited after APAP administration. AuNPs treatment reversed all variables significantly towards normal level and was found nontoxic. Thus it is concluded that gold nanoparticles played a beneficial role in reducing acetaminophen induced toxicity and can be used in the development of drug against hepatic as well as renal diseases, after further preclinical and clinical studies. 相似文献

Ten strains of Azotobacter chroococcum were studied for their ability to invade the endorhizosphere of wheat. Strain W‐5 exhibited ability to invade endorhizosphere as shown in the microscopic observations. This strain was compared with the strain OA‐3 which did not invade the endorhizosphere zone. Strain W‐5 showed higher production of cellulase and pectinase than OA‐3. Both the strains induced defense enzymes in the host plant. However, induction of peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia lyase activities (PAL) was higher in OA‐3 than W‐5. Quantitative differences in flavonoid like compounds obtained from root extracts and root exudates of plants inoculated with these strains were observed. (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
