Background

Plants are the natural source of antioxidants as well as antimicrobial compounds that has great potentials in pharmaceutical industry. In the present study, two medicinal plants Atropa belladonna and Matricaria chamomilla were collected from Northern areas of Pakistan.

Materials and Methods

The extracts of the collected plants were obtained by microwave assisted extraction (MAE) with changing parameters, power level and time; methanol and ethanol were solvents used during extraction. The extracts of plants were tested against different bacterial strains.

Results

It was observed that ethanolic extracts of Atropa belladonna has more significant antimicrobial activity against S.aureus than E.coli. In parallel, methanolic extract of Matricaria chamomilla showed greater significant antibacterial activity against S.aureus when compared with E.coli. In comparison, ethanolic extracts of Matricaria chamomilla has shown more significant results against S. aureus than E.coli (p≤0.05). Both plants had no antibacterial activity against S.typhi. The free radical scavenging activity observed by DPPH assay, indicate that both plants have antioxidant activity at all levels of concentrations in solvent tested during the present work. However, methanolic extracts had greater antioxidant activity when compared with ethanolic extracts.

Conclusion

Present study is thus helpful in highlighting present potentials for antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in the selected plants.  相似文献

Improving the longevity of composite restorations has proven to be difficult when they are bonded to dentin. Dentin demineralization leaves collagen fibrils susceptible to enzymatic digestion, which causes breakdown of the resin–dentin interface. Therefore, measures for counteracting the enzymatic environment by enhancing dentin collagen’s resistance to degradation have the potential to improve the durability of dental composite restorations. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of polyphenol-rich extracts and a chemical cross-linker on the cross-linking interaction, resistance to digestion, and endogenous matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activities of dentin collagen under clinically relevant conditions. Ten-µm-thick films were cut from dentin slabs of non-carious extracted human third molars. Following demineralization, polyphenol-rich extracts—including grape seed (GSE), green tea (GTE), and cranberry juice (CJE)—or chemical cross-linker carbodiimide with n-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) were applied to the demineralized dentin surfaces for 30 s. The collagen cross-linking, bio-stabilization, and gelatinolytic activities of MMPs 2 and 9 were studied by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, weight loss, hydroxyproline release, scanning/transmission electron microscopy, and in situ zymography. All treatments significantly increased resistance to collagenase degradation and reduced the gelatinolytic MMP activity of dentin collagen compared to the untreated control. The CJE- and GSE-treated groups were more resistant to digestion than the GTE- or EDC/NHS-treated ones (p < 0.05), which was consistent with the cross-linking interaction found with FTIR and the in situ performance on the acid-etched dentin surface found with SEM/TEM. The collagen films treated with CJE showed the lowest MMP activity, followed by GSE, GTE, and, finally, EDC/NHS. The CJE-treated dentin collagen rapidly increased its resistance to digestion and MMP inhibition. An application of CJE as short as 30 s may be a clinically feasible approach to improving the longevity of dentin bonding in composite restorations.  相似文献

Primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix is a rare malignancythat constitutes 0.5% of all gastroin-testinalneoplasms. Moreover, primary signet ring cell carcinomaof the appendix is an exceedingly rare entity. In the present report, we describe a rare case of primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the appendix with ovarian metastasesand unresectable peritoneal dissemination occurring in a 45-year-old female patient. She was clinically misdiagnosed as torsion of ovarian cyst. She underwent appendicectomy and unilateral salpingooophorectomy.Histopathology revealed signet ring cell carcinoma and a right hemicolectomy was done. She then received palliative systemic chemotherapy with 12 cycles of oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil, and leucovorin(FOLFOX-4). The patient is doing well till today on follow up without progression of disease 10 mo after beginning chemotherapy.  相似文献

Trichobezoars(hair ball) are usually located in the stomach, but may extend through the pylorus into the duodenum and small bowel(Rapunzel syndrome). Rapunzel syndrome remains uncommon; with fewer than 40 cases reported. To the best of our knowledge, this case may be the first well-documented case with a length of 75 cm. They are almost always associated with trichotillomania and trichophagia or other psychiatric disorders. In the literature several treatment options are proposed, including removal by conventional laparotomy, laparoscopy and endoscopy. Herein, we are reporting an interesting case of an 18-year mentally retarded girl with history of trichotillomania and trichophagia who presented to our emergency department with a history of central abdominal pain associated with vomiting and constipation for five days. An examination showed a trichobezoar requiring emergent surgical intervention, and indicating the need for psychiatric treatment. The trichobezoar was treated successfully by laparoscopy.  相似文献

Congenital cutaneous candidiasis (CCC) is an extremely rare disorder that presents within the first 6 days of life. The manifestations ranges from diffuse skin eruption without any systemic symptoms to respiratory distress, hepatosplenomegaly, sepsis, and death. We report a neonate who presented with generalized skin eruptions at birth, characterized by erythematous macules and papules. The eruption involved head, face, neck, trunk, and extremities. Candida albicans was demonstrated on direct KOH smear, skin biopsy. The disease implies a congenital intrauterine infection and is different from neonatal candidiasis, which manifests as thrush or diaper dermatitis. The infection is acquired from the maternal genital tract in an ascending fashion. Clinical features, direct smear examination of specimen, and appropriate cultures are useful in differentiating the lesions from other more common dermatoses of the neonatal period. Topical antifungal therapy is sufficient unless systemic candidiasis is present. Prognosis for congenital cutaneous candidiasis is good.  相似文献

Enamel demineralization is slowed by salivary proteins that inhibit calcium hydroxyapatite (HA) demineralization. Statherin (StN43), a 43-residue phosphorylated salivary protein with primary sequence similarities to osteopontin and caseins, binds calcium and HA. The aim of this study was to identify the minimum length of the functional domain of the statherin molecule required for cariostatic function by measuring the efficacy of peptides of progressively shorter length (i.e. containing only the N-terminal 21 (StN21), 15 (StN15), 10 (StN10), or 5 (StN5) residues) to reduce HA demineralization rates (RD(HA) ). Porous HA blocks were used as enamel analogues, and were exposed to 0.1 M acetic acid at pH 4 for 120 h, rinsed, and treated with StN21, StN15, StN10, or StN5 peptides (1.88 × 10(-5) M) for 24 h, then demineralized for a further 120 h. The RD(HA) was measured, before and after peptide treatment, using scanning microradiography. Hydroxyapatite blocks treated with StN21 and StN15 demonstrated a 50-60% reduction in the RD(HA) . However, no reduction in the RD(HA) was observed following treatment with either StN10, StN5, or buffer only. The mechanism by which statherin-like peptides reduce RD(HA) may be associated with their binding to HA surfaces. Comparisons with previously published binding energies of statherin to HA also suggest that statherin-like peptides containing 15 N-terminal residues or more, are required for binding, suggesting a link between binding and demineralization reduction.  相似文献
