During 160 consecutive fiberoptic endoscopic examinations, glycogenic acanthosis was diagnosed in 24 patients. The endoscopic diagnosis was confirmed histologicaily in the fust 14 patients from whom biopsies were obtained. No correlation with any other disease affecting the gastrointestinal tract was found including reflux esophagitis. The long-term performance of porous and solid ring-tipped electrodes was compared in clinical use over a one-year period. Each of the two electrode designs was implanted in 22 patients in conjunction with an output-programmable pacemaker. Implant evaluation included impedance, height of sensed R wave, and a strength-duration curve. Threshold determination by pulse-width programming was performed at the time of implant and at one week, two weeks, two months, six months, and one year. Objectives To evaluate the usefulness of the Food Guide Pyramid as a quantitative tool for assessing nutritional adequacy and quality.Design One-day food records (n=2,489) were assigned food group scores (1 through 5) by two systems. System 1 recorded the number of food groups on a given record that included the minimum number of servings suggested by the Food Guide Pyramid. System 2 recorded the number of food groups in the Food Guide Pyramid for which at least one serving was included. The food records were further evaluated by mean adequacy ratio (MAR) for iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, and vitamin B-6 (MAR-5 score) and percentage of energy contributed by fat and sugar. Sensitivity and specificity of the food group scores to predict nutritional inadequacy were determined.Subjects College students (n = 2,489) attending introductory nutrition, foods, and health-related courses at a mid-western university.Statistical analyses Student's t test, χ2 test, Dunnett's multiple mean comparison test.Results A food group score of 5 was given to 11% and 35% of the diet records by systems 1 and 2, respectively; MAR-5 scores of 75 or greater were given to 70% of the records. Only 4% of the diets contained both 30% or less and 10% or less of energy from fat and sugar, respectively. Researchers have reported that 45–50% of American and European youth aged 10-19 worry about the negative impact of nuclear war on their lives. For some, the fear of nuclear war was associated with troubling feelings of sadness, powerlessness, and rage. Fearing they have no future, many teens rated fear of nuclear war as their second greatest worry. However, research has not identified those children or adolescents who are at high risk for nuclear anxiety (NA) or the impact of NA and developmental problems. Young Americans, who do not mention nuclear anxiety unless asked about it, were less optimistic and less knowledgeable about nuclear war than Soviet youth. PURPOSE: Clinical experience and epidemiological studies suggest that patients with interstitial cystitis have multiple nonbladder related symptoms. However, to our knowledge this finding has not been tested with a validated questionnaire and matched controls. With the University of Wisconsin scale, we compare the scores for patients with interstitial cystitis to those for control subjects. This validated questionnaire includes 7 bladder and 18 reference symptoms not related to the bladder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 35 female patients with interstitial cystitis and 35 age matched female controls completed the University of Wisconsin questionnaire. RESULTS: For the 7 bladder symptoms the difference between interstitial cystitis and control groups was extremely significant (p = 0.0001). Patients with interstitial cystitis had higher scores than controls for 2 reference symptoms, including other pelvic discomfort, backache, dizziness, chest pain, aches in joints, abdominal cramps, nausea, heart pounding and headache (p <0.01). However, they did not have higher scores for blind spots and/or blurred vision, numbness and/or tingling in fingers or toes, swollen ankles, feeling of suffocation, sore throat, cough, flu, nasal congestion and ringing in ears. The majority of patients with interstitial cystitis had a 0 score for all but 2 of the reference symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with interstitial cystitis had increased scores for 9 reference symptoms but did not indiscriminately report high scores for generalized complaints. This result suggests that in some cases of interstitial cystitis the pathophysiology may affect other organ systems besides the bladder.
