Eighteen Coopworth ewe lambs were divided into three groups based on the initial cystourethrogram and cystometry findings at 5 – 7 weeks of age: group 1, 6 lambs with spontaneous low-pressure bilateral vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) on bladder filling were used to study the natural history of reflux; group 2, 5 lambs with no VUR detected were used to establish an experimental model of bilateral VUR using an unroofing surgical procedure; group 3, 7 lambs with spontaneous VUR detected during micturition had the same surgical procedure to increase the degree of VUR. All three animal groups were followed for 4 – 10 months. Spontaneous VUR was demonstrated in 13 of 18 lambs (25/36 ureters). The presence and severity of spontaneously occurring reflux in group 1 lambs diminished with increasing age. VUR was created successfully in group 2 and increased in degree in group 3 animals. The only significant histological finding in all three animal groups with grades II and III VUR was distal renal tubular dilatation. The sheep is a useful and readily available animal for studying VUR. During 4 – 10 months of follow-up, sterile reflux without bladder outflow obstruction resulted in distal renal tubular dilatation, but no renal parenchymal damage. This study investigated the applicability and utility of Megargee and Bohn's MMPI-based offender classification system in correctional mental health units (MHUs). Previous studies found that 11 MHU samples (n = 1723) had substantially more offenders classified in the more pathological MMPI types than did 21 samples (n = 5881) drawn from general male populations in US prisons. In this study of 63 severely disturbed felons, 43% belonged to the most pathological type (‘group How’). Comparing MHU patients with general offenders from the same IvfIvIPI types on staff ratings and case history variables, we found that the MHU patients were significantly poorer in adjustment. Within the MHU sample, there was no difference in case history variables or adjustment ratings between those in the most and least severe MMPI types. These findings differed from those of studies using less severely disturbed, more heterogeneous, MHU populations. It was concluded that, in settings in which the entire population is flagrantly disturbed, the MMPI-based system is more useful in screening potential admissions than it is in making meaningful distinctions among those already admitted.  相似文献

Over 40% of all cohabiting women, in Asia and Latin America, are using contraceptives, most of them modern methods. In many countries, upper order births are disappearing, and rural birth rates in some regions have fallen nearly as much as urban ones. The average family size is diminishing sharply. It is close to 2 children in Thailand, and below 2 throughout urban China. 4/5 of the developing world's population live in only 17 countries, in which contraceptive use has risen from 41% to 52% of couples in 10 years. Moreover, family planning programs affect the overall health of the population: fewer births have meant fewer maternal deaths, and fewer orphans, fewer infant and child deaths, fewer high-risk births (especially at short intervals and upper parities), fewer children left unimmunized, and fewer unserved by the health services. The extent of this quiet social revolution has its limits. Mainly in the 50 struggling countries of sub-Saharan Africa, most of them with weak health ministries, as well as, among the largest 8 countries, Nigeria and Pakistan, which have changed little. But both are reactivating their family planning programs, and the concentration of 2/3 of the developing world's population in 8 large countries means that only 8 administrations can control the course of vital rates. The consequence of the great transformation induced by contraceptive use has begun to give developing world's women control over their own child bearing, adding freedom to their lives. Nevertheless, if the contraceptive revolution has enormously advanced the cause of international health, it still has a long way to go.  相似文献

Adult female B6C3F1mice were gavaged with 4,4'-thiobis-(6-t-butyl-m-cresol) (TBBC)in corn oil at doses of 10, 100, or 200 mg/kg daily for 14 consecutivedays. There was no overt toxicity, as manifested by grosslyobservable behavioral changes, decreased growth rate over theexposure period, or mortality. There were also no marked effectson serum chemistries or hematology, with the exception of asignificant increase (41%) in the number of leukocytes at thehighest dose. Absolute differential counts indicated that significantincreases occurred in the number of lymphocytes (31%) and neutrophils(177%). Studies with bone marrow indicated a significant 30%increase in the number of cells/femur from animals treated withthe highest dose of TBBC. The number of macrophage progenitors(CFU-M)/femur was significantly increased by 28%, while thenumber of granulocyte-monocyte progenitors (CFU-GM)/femur wasnonsig-nificantly increased by 20% in the high dose animals.The weight of both the spleen and liver was increased in a dose-relatedfashion, although the histopathology of the spleen of TBBC-treatedmice was not different from control. The livers of mice receivingthe high dose showed mild focal hydropic degeneration, mildhepatitis, and a slight increase in the number of Kupffer cells.No other organs were affected. Liver microsomal protein andcytochrome P-450 levels were increased in a dose-related fashion.Enzyme activities of aminopyrine demethylase and aniline hydroxylase,but not arylhydrocarbon hydroxylase, were also increased ina dose-related fashion.  相似文献

Using a conditioning-test paradigm, we studied the recovery function of tibial nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) conditioned by preceding peroneal nerve stimulation. The inter-stimulus intervals (ISIs) ranged from 0 to 400 msec, where 0 msec indicated simultaneous arrival of tibial and peroneal nerve volleys at the L1 spine. The recovery curve was W-shaped, showing two peaks of SEP suppression, maximum at 6 msec ISI (1st phase) and 50-75 ISI msec (2nd phase). In the 1st phase suppression, we found distinct differences in wave forms between 0-2 msec ISI and 4-6 msec ISI. At 0-2 msec ISI, P40-N50-P60 amplitude decreased and latencies shortened, while P31 and N35 were unchanged. At 4-6 msec ISI, all peaks, possibly excluding P31, were markedly depressed. We attribute the former change to an "occlusive effect" and the latter to an "inhibitory effect," each mediated via a central synaptic network between the two nerves. The attenuation of the 2nd but not the 1st phase suppression by peroneal nerve block distal to the stimulating electrodes provided evidence that the 2nd phase suppression resulted primarily from interfering afferent signals generated by peroneal nerve peripheral receptors, activated by foot movement.  相似文献

Summary (1) The influence of various dopamine (DA) receptor agonists and antagonists on the kinetic properties of the specific binding of 3H(–)-N-n-propylnorapomorphine (NPA) in the mouse striatum in vivo was studied. The specific binding of 3H-NPA, defined as the difference between the radioactivity in the striatum and cerebellum, was completely antagonized by the selective D-2 receptor antagonist raclopride but not by the selective D-1 antagonist SCH 23390, showing that the binding occurs exclusively to the D2 receptors. (2) The selective D-2 receptor agonists pergolide and quinpirole inhibited the 3H-NPA binding biphasically at low doses, indicating that these DA receptor agonists have high affinities for a subfraction (10 to 30%) of the NPA binding sites. (3) Increasing the synaptic DA concentration by DA release [(+)-amphetamine] or uptake blockade (amfonelic acid and methylphenidate) inhibited the 3HNPA binding in a competitive manner (unchanged B max, increased K D). Depletion of the DA in the synapses by -butyrolactone or reserpine decreased the apparent K D value. (4) The possibility of estimating changes in the synaptic DA concentration from changes in the apparent K D is discussed. According to the results obtained, the normal concentration of DA in the synaptic cleft in mouse striatum in vivo is about 40 nmol/l and this concentration is increased 2 to 3 times by (+)-amphetamine and amfonelic acid in doses which evoke hyperactivity and stereotypic behaviour.Send offprint requests to S. Immunotoxicity of the Semiconductor Gallium Arsenide in Female B6C3F1 Mice   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The effects of gallium arsenide (GaAs) exposure on immunocompetenceof B6C3F1 female mice were investigated. GaAs was administeredas a single intratracheal instillation at doses of 50, 100,and 200 mg/kg. Fourteen days after exposure, various cellularand humoral immune parameters were assessed. GaAs exposure increasedspleen cellularity in a dose-dependent manner. However, thepercentages of Thy 1.2 positive and 1g positive cells were decreasedand that of F4/80 positive cells was increased dose dependency.The IgM and IgG antibody-forming cell response of the spleento the T-dependent antigen sheep erythrocytes was reduced by66 and 48%, respectively, at 200 mg/kg. Levels of the serumcomplement protein, C3, were increased by as much as 16% withno significant change in CH50 levels. The mitogenic responseof splenic T cells to Con A and PHA was unaffected by GaAs,but that of B cells to LPS was increased by 52%. The delayedhypersensitivity response to keyhole limpet hemocyanin and mixedlymphocyte response were significantly reduced in a dose-dependentmanner by GaAs exposure. Natural killer cell activity againstthe YAC-1 mouse lymphoma was enhanced in treated mice. Analysisof peritoneal exudate cells (PEC) revealed a dose-dependentdecrease in number and a shift in the composition of PECs. Thepercentage of PEC monocytes increased from 53% of the populationto 81%, while the lymphocytes decreased from 46 to 20%. Theadherent PEC population demonstrated decreased phagocytosisof covaspheres and increased phagocytosis of chicken erythrocytes(CRBC). GaAs exposure had no effect on host resistance to Plasmodiumyoelii or Streptococcus pneumoniae, but dose dependency increasedresistance of the mouse to Listeria monocytogenes Treated micedemonstrated a significantly decreased resistance to the B16F10melanoma with a sevenfold increase in tumor burden at 200 mg/kg.GaAs affects both humoral and cellular immune parameters inmice and impairs the ability of the immune system to protectagainst B16F10 tumor challenge.  相似文献
