The projection pattern of forepaw nerves to the cuneate nucleus of the raccoon

The transganglionic transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used to determine the projection pattern within the cuneate nucleus of the 4 major nerves innervating the forepaw of the raccoon, a carnivore noted for its tactile and manipulative abilities. The two nerves innervating the dorsal, hairy skin and claws (the radial and dorsal ulnar nerves) projected to the marginal rim of the cuneate nucleus, but not to the middle cluster region or to the caudal region of the nucleus. The two nerves innervating glabrous skin (median and ulnar) projected heavily to the cluster region as well as to rostral and caudal levels of the nucleus. This organization, with dorsal nerves ending above the ventral nerves, is similar in the raccoon, rat and tree squirrel, but reversed in the cat. However, the medio-lateral topography is similar in all species with the ulnar and dorsal ulnar nerves projecting medially within the nucleus compared to the median and radial nerves.     

"Lysostrip" experiments with HLA class-II antigens. I. Independent surface mobility of DQ and DR molecules

We report on results of lysostrip experiments designated to analyse the molecular relations between DQ and DR antigens. The purpose of lysostrip application was to determine whether these antigens can independently be redistributed on B-cell surface by incubation with a specific antibody followed by incubation with F(ab')2 fragments of rabbit antihuman Ig. The obtained results have clearly shown that DQ antigens, and supertypic and narrow DR antigens, move independently, indicating that they are located on separate molecules, supporting the concept of different DQ and DR loci.     

A phase I-II trial of 4'-deoxydoxorubicin (esorubicin) in refractory or relapsed acute leukemia

In a phase I-II study, 21 patients with relapsed or refractory acute leukemia were treated with 4'-deoxydoxorubicin (esorubicin), the 4'-deoxy derivative of doxorubicin. Four of 14 evaluable patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) in relapse or refractory to other anthracyclines achieved partial response (28.5%). Pharmacokinetics were similar to those of the parent compound, doxorubicin. Esorubicin has activity in ANLL and has pharmacologic properties comparable to those of other anthracyclines. Dose-limiting toxicity occurs in the form of mucositis, which may limit its use in combination with other antileukemic drugs.     

Three different pathogenic mechanisms for paraparesis in association with bacterial infections

Three different pathogenic mechanisms are apparent for paraparesis in association with a bacterial infection: a spinal cord compression caused by either an epidural abscess or a vertebral collapse due to spondylitis, an ischaemic spinal cord lesion as a result of septic thromboembolus in abdominal aorta, and a nonspecific, probably immunological, cause in association with reactive polyarthritis. An example of each of these mechanisms is described by means of case histories.     

Diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma of the thoracic spine--differential diagnostic difficulties

Spinal Ewing's sarcomas are rare and cause problems in differential diagnosis. The radiologic, nuclear medicine and CT findings in two children with histologically proven Ewing's sarcoma are presented and problems in differential diagnosis discussed. Biopsy should be done early.
