Biofilms are responsible for causing 80% of human infections including chronic infections like-cystic fibrosis, endocarditis and osteomyelitis. The growing ability of the biofilm to resist most of the available antibiotics has caused a serious threat to different life forms. Plenty of research work has already been reported, and some are ongoing to combat this serious health issue worldwide. Recent developments in nanotechnology have given a great boost in dealing biofilm infections. The unique size-dependent properties for antibacterial and antibiofilm activities provide the nanoparticles better options to eradicate biofilms. Here, the authors have discussed the basic biology of bacterial biofilm and their impact on human health. In addition, different nanotechnology-based strategies to overcome serious health issues caused by biofilm infections have been highlighted.
Beetroot is an herb used worldwide as a food product, raw material for food industry, ethanol production and source of food coloring. Beet leaves are an unconventional food with antioxidant properties, which might neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by oxidized Low‐Density Lipoprotein (LDL) present in dyslipidemias. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of beet leaves on the suppression of LDL oxidative processes. Beet leaves extract was produced, characterized, and tested for its antioxidant capacity using endothelial cells in vitro. A model of human umbilical vein endothelial cells was used in various tests, including viability assay, molecular analysis of antioxidant genes, ROS labeling, and macrophage adhesion assay. The extract improved the antioxidative protection of endothelial cells against different agents including oxidized LDL‐cholesterol and H2O2. It acted on ROS directly due to its high content of natural antioxidants, but also due to the activation and improvement of cellular defenses such as Superoxide dismutase 1, Superoxide dismutase 2, and catalase. The inhibition of LDL‐mediated oxidative effects on endothelial cells may turn this unconventional food a functional food with great potential for phytotherapy of atherosclerosis as an adjuvant for medicinal treatments. 相似文献
The atypical, or nontuberculous, mycobacteria are opportunistic pathogens that usually cause infection following accidental trauma or surgery. These organisms are ubiquitous in nature but have been found with increasing frequency in other environments that include medical offices and surgical suites. Management of atypical mycobacterial ocular infections can be difficult because in vitro antibiotic activity does not always correlate with in vivo efficacy and because normal immune defenses against mycobacteria may work too slowly to prevent irreversible damage to infected ocular tissues. This report describes a patient who developed a severe ocular infection due to Mycobacterium chelonae after vitrectomy. Despite eradication of the infection, the eye became blind and painful. The somatotropin release-inhibiting factor somatostatin-14 (SRIF) is known to activate distinct receptor subtypes (sst1-5). In rat pituitary tumor cells (GC cells), sst2 but not sst1 receptors mediate the SRIF-induced inhibition of intracellular concentration of Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) and are negatively coupled to cAMP-dependent pathways. In the present study, transduction mechanisms coupling distinct SRIF receptors to their specific functional role were investigated with the use of both SRIF agonists with well-known affinity at individual SRIF receptors and the sst2 receptor antagonist L-Tyr(8) isomer of Cyanamid 154806 (CYN-154806). Our results demonstrate that sst1 and sst2 receptors are coupled to distinct signaling pathways in GC cells. In particular, sst2 receptors are negatively coupled to the cAMP-dependent pathway and this pathway is partially responsible for the sst2 receptor-mediated inhibition of [Ca2+]i. In addition, sst1 and sst2 receptors are both coupled to a decrease of arachidonic acid (AA) release with an efficacy similar to that of SRIF, suggesting that SRIF reduces AA release through either a partial activation of both receptors or the activation of one at a time. This finding is important given the well-accepted role for phospholipase A2 (PLA2) as a positive signaling component in transduction pathways of SRIF receptors. sst1 and sst2 receptor negative coupling to PLA2/AA pathways does not seem to be implicated in the SRIF-induced inhibition of [Ca2+]i. The possible role for the SRIF-mediated inhibition of AA release in GC cell function remains to be elucidated. 相似文献
Larsen syndrome is a complex syndrome with genetic heterogeneity, and with both autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive patterns of inheritance. It is characterized by congenital dislocation of joints, flat faces and complicated by issues relating to respiratory, cardiac, musculoskeletal and central nervous systems. This report describes the anaesthetic management of two patients with Larsen syndrome. The first case is a 4-year-old patient who had cervical cord compression secondary to cervical instability and who was scheduled for anterior corpectomy with fusion of cervical vertebrae and placement of halo frame. This patient had transient loss of evoked potentials during positioning and a stormy postoperative course requiring reintubation and a prolonged stay in the intensive care unit. The second case is a 22-month-old child who was scheduled for a repeat posterior cervical spinal fusion due to failure of her initial fusion procedure. This patient had an uneventful perioperative course. Relevant anaesthetic issues in patients with Larsen syndrome are discussed. 相似文献
We carried out a seroepidemiological survey to define the prevalence of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV6) infection in an aboriginal population (Andino Pune?os) from a remote region in north-west Argentina. Antibodies against HHV6 (total IgG and the 4 subclasses of IgG) were studied in 84 serum samples (collected in 1995 and stored at -70 degrees C), using core blood mononuclear cells infected with HHV6 in an immunofluorescence assay. Of the 84 samples, 70 (83%; 95% confidence interval, 75-91%) exhibited IgG antibodies against HHV6. No significant differences in the frequency of humoral immunity were found among the 4 age-groups studied (mean ages 13, 31, 47 and 70 years) namely, 75%, 89.7%, 79.2% and 100%, respectively. HHV6-specific IgG1 was found in all the positive serum samples tested but none of them contained specific IgG2, IgG3 and IgG4. These results confirmed a high rate of infection with HHV6 within this aboriginal group in Argentina and an IgG1 anti-HHV6 activity compatible with a maintenance of immunity. 相似文献
