Synthesis,characterization and photoreaction of side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers and copolymers comprising alkenyloxy-biphenyl mesogen

Photoreactive (meth)acrylate monomers having mesogenic groups based on 4-hexyloxy-4′-(3-methyl-2-butenyloxy)biphenyl and 4-hexyloxy-4′-(2-butenyloxy)biphenyl were synthesized. Methacrylate monomers ( 3c, d ) and acrylate monomer having 3-methyl-2-butenyloxy group ( 3b ) were polymerized by free radical mechanism; the acrylate monomer having 2-butenyloxy group ( 3a ) caused gelation during the polymerization. To obtain photoreactivity, 4-benzoylphenyl (meth)acrylates were radically copolymerized with monomers 3b and 3d . Thermal behavior of (co)polymers was determined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and temperature-controlled X-ray analysis. (Co)polymers showed liquid-crystalline behaviour with nematic and smectic phases. UV-irradiation was used to photochemically crosslink copolymer films, and the resultant films were insoluble in organic solvents. The uniaxially oriented copolymer thin film was photo-crosslinked and showed thermally stable orientation.     

An experimental study on the pathogenesis of congenital hand malformation--with reference to local disturbance in the limb bud and congenital constriction band syndrome

In order to study congenital constriction band syndrome, we performed local cauterization of the lower limb buds of embryos in fertilized white leghorn eggs between hour 0 on day 4 (day 4-0) and day 7-0 of incubation. Constriction bands, acrosyndactyly, and amputation of digits, malformations characteristic of this syndrome, were all induced by intervention after day 5-0, when digital ray formation was first observed, indicating that they all develop after ray formation. Histological examination showed that encapsulation and shedding of the lesion containing hematoma and necrotic tissue at the distal end of a digital ray led to digit amputation. When the cells encapsulating this lesion extend over another digital ray, moreover, the ray tips fuse, while the rest of the two digits involved remain discrete-resulting in acrosyndactyly.     

Clinical and pathological evaluations of methotrexate, vinblastine, Adriamycin and cisplatin chemotherapy for advanced urothelial cancers

We have treated advanced transitional-cell carcinoma of the urothelial tract with methotrexate, vinblastine, Adriamycin, and cisplatin (M-VAC) chemotherapy since July of 1985. We analyzed the effect of that chemotherapy in 26 patients with advanced urothelial cancer who were treated in our hospital and followed up. They were divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of 15 patients with distant metastases. In all, 11 of them received M-VAC as adjuvant chemotherapy for metastatic lesions after surgical removal of the primary lesion, and the remaining 4 patients were not operable since they had very advanced-stage tumors; they received only M-VAC chemotherapy. Group 2 contained 11 patients who received M-VAC neo-adjuvant chemotherapy. In group 1, the overall response rate was 57.1% and the mean duration of response was 12.6 months. In the 11 patients who had received M-VAC as adjuvant therapy after surgical removal of the primary tumor, the mean duration of response was 14.1 months. After M-VAC chemotherapy, six patients underwent surgical resection of metastatic lesions and restaging was done pathologically in these cases. The clinical response coincided with the pathological response in all six cases. In group 2,5 of 11 patients experienced histological downstaging of the resected bladder. M-VAC chemotherapy combined with surgical resection of residual tumors has proved to be an effective option against advanced urothelial cancer.Presented at the 4th International Conference on Treatment of Urinary Tract Tumors with Adriamycin/Farmorubicin, 16–17 November 1990, Osaka, Japan     

Effects of smoking and drinking on excretion of hippuric acid among toluene-exposed workers

Summary In order to investigate possible effects of smoking and drinking on the metabolism of toluence in occupational settings, 206 toluene-exposed men (mean age: 31.4 years) in shoemaking, painting, or surface-coating workshops together with 246 nonexposed control men (36.8 years) were studied for the time-weighted average intensities of exposure to toluene, hippuric acid concentration in shift-end urine samples, and the two social habits of smoking and drinking. The mean daily consumptions of cigarettes and ethanol were about 20 pieces and 10 g among smokers and drinkers, respectively. The geometric mean toluene concentration among the exposed subjects was about 20 ppm, with a maximum of 521 ppm. Regression analysis after classification of the subjects by smoking and drinking clearly demonstrated that the two social habits, when combined, markedly reduce the hippuric acid level in the urine of workers exposed to was a significant association between smoking and drinking habits, which hindered separate evaluation of the effects of the two habits on toluene metabolism. Comparison of the present results with the findings reported in the literature, however, suggested that the observed effects may be attributable to smoking rather than to drinking habits.     

Glued Carbon Fiber Electrodes for Diaphragm Pacing

Carbon fibers with fibrin glue were used as electrodes for diaphragm pacing. The electrodes were applied to three mongrel dogs and the effectiveness was tested. The carbon leads were glued to phrenic nerves by means of the fibrinogen and thrombin bilaterally. The tidal volumes and threshold current level for stimulation were measured at various time up to 9 weeks after implantation. Effective contraction of diaphragm were observed for 9 weeks. By using this electrode, the exfoliation of the nerve is not necessary, the nerve can be maintained in an intact state, and the risk of the implanting operation can be minimized.     

Coexistence of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and argyrophilic grain disease: A non‐demented autopsy case showing circumscribed temporal atrophy and involvement of the amygdala

We report a case of a 68‐year‐old right‐handed man with sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and argyrophilic grain disease (AGD) having a 22‐month duration. His initial symptoms were dysarthria and swallowing difficulty at the age of 67. Subsequently bulbar palsy and pyramidal signs developed. His cognitive functions including face recognition, personality, and behavior were not changed compared with that of before the disease onset. However, magnetic resonance imaging disclosed severe right side‐predominant temporal atrophy. The neurological diagnosis was bulbar type ALS. Pathological examination disclosed histological evidence of ALS, including loss of Betz cells and lower motor neurons, corticospinal tract degeneration, and Bunina bodies. In addition, severe neuronal loss in the bilateral temporal cortex with an anterior gradient was found. Ubiquitin‐positive inclusions were encountered in the spinal anterior horn cells and hippocampal dentate gyrus, while few ubiquitin‐positive inclusions were noted in the affected temporal cortex. The amygdala, especially the basolateral nuclear group, was severely affected by neuronal loss with tissue rarefaction. Moderate neuronal loss was encountered in the parahippocampal gyrus, and to a lesser degree, in the ambient gyrus. Unexpectedly, many argyrophilic grains, coiled bodies, tau‐positive bush‐like astrocytes, pretangles, and ballooned neurons were found in the limbic system and temporal cortex. In the hippocampus, selective tau accumulation with minor neurofibrillary changes was observed in CA2 neurons. The present case suggests that (i) ALS and AGD do rarely coexist, and (ii) when ALS patients have severe temporal atrophy, not only ALS with dementia but also concurrent AGD should be considered in the differential diagnosis.     

UFT for head and neck cancers: its tissue concentrations and effects on lymphocyte subpopulations

Summary UFT, a combination of the masked compound of 5-fluorouracil (FT-207) and uracil, was given to head and neck cancer patients for 1 week preoperatively and for 8 weeks postoperatively. Drug concentrations were examined in the surgically removed tissues. The concentrations of FT-207, 5-fluorouracil, and uracil were higher in tumor tissues than in normal tissues. The lymphocyte subpopulations were assessed by cytofluorometry with monoclonal antibodies. There was no evidence that adjuvant chemotherapy with UFT specifically suppresses immunocompetent cells. We therefore conclude that further clinical evaluation of adjuvant chemotherapy with UFT would be worthwhile.     

Polymorphism of renin-angiotensin system genes in progressive IgA nephropathy

Summary: Clinical studies revealed that angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor reduces proteinuria and attenuates progressive decline in renal function in IgA nephropathy. Recent studies by us and others have demonstrated that the homozygote of the D allele (DD) of the ACE insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism is a potential risk factor for poor prognosis in IgA nephropathy, and that this deletion polymorphism predicts the therapeutic efficacy of ACE inhibition on proteinuria and, potentially, on progressive deterioration of renal function in patients with the nephropathy.
