Chronic thromboembolic occlusion in the adult can mimic pulmonary artery agenesis

In the first 100 patients operated on for C T-E PH, three were referred with the diagnosis of UPAA having been made elsewhere. We found that many features of these two conditions are so similar that differential diagnosis is very difficult. Shared features may include findings on chest x-ray film, pulmonary angiography, CT scan and MRI studies. Since the two conditions vary substantially with respect to the methods of potential surgical correction, recognition of this possible differential diagnostic dilemma is important.

Balloon dilatation of the very small ductus arteriosus is described, and its application in five patients undergoing catheter occlusion is presented and discussed.     

Severe erythroblastopenia and hemolytic anemia during a hepatitis A infection

A 41-year-old woman had acute hepatitis A infection complicated with severe anemia due to selective erythroblastopenia and hemolysis. A mechanism involving a cellular immune reaction is suggested. The hematological complications resolved during steroid treatment. She later developed a transient seropositive arthritis.     

The use of pelvic ultrasonography in the evaluation of adolescents with pelvic inflammatory disease

To evaluate the use of pelvic ultrasonography in the diagnosis and management of female adolescents with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), sonograms of 60 patients with PID were compared with those of 40 age-matched controls. Sonograms were evaluated for adnexal volume, adnexal adherence, uterine size, and the presence of cul-de-sac fluid. Eleven (19.3%) of the 57 patients with PID, in whom adequate sonograms were obtained, had tubo-ovarian abscesses; in seven of these patients, the abscesses were diagnosed ultrasonographically before suspected clinically. Even in those patients without tubo-ovarian abscesses, the mean (+/- SD) adnexal volume in the PID group was significantly larger than that of the control group (11.0 +/- 6.8 cm3 vs 5.2 +/- 2.7 cm,3 respectively). Adnexal adherence, uterine size, and the presence of cul-de-sac fluid were not useful in differentiating patients with PID from normal controls. Pelvic ultrasonography can be a useful adjunct in the diagnosis and management of PID in adolescents and may, in some instances, provide diagnoses in the absence of clinical findings.     

Functional development of the visual system in normal and protein-deprived rats. IV. Latencies in the specific visual pathway of adult rats

It was recently shown that an increase in latency of the cortical visual evoked response (VER) seen in young malnourished animals persists in adult rats given a low protein diet. In the present paper the VER latencies of the specific visual pathway were measured in order to establish the level at which the latency increase occurs in protein-deprived rats. The VER in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) showed no significant differences to onset or peak latencies between control (C) and the protein-deprived (PD) rats. The dLGN activity was higher in C rats than in PD rats. Late components differed in median values between the two groups, but the individual variations were large. Generally, the VER of the dLGN in PD rats was more stereotype compared with the C rats. Intracortical VER at a depth of 0.4-0.5 mm showed a small negative component of short onset latency in both C and PD rats. This component preceded the onset of the initial positivity recorded from the cortical surface by 1-2 ms in C rats and by 3-6 ms in PD rats. Following electrical stimulation of the dLGN, no differences in onset latency of the first cortical activity (monosynaptic response) were recorded between C and PD rats, whereas later activity was significantly delayed in PD compared with C rats. The laminar potential pattern was less distinct in PD compared with C rats, and the late components of the evoked response from deep cortical layers were markedly attenuated or lacking.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The article presents an original method of laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, immediate and long-term results of the treatment of 132 patients with esophageal opening hernia. It also describes the analysis of the life quality of patients with the gastroesophageal reflux disease before and after the surgery.
