Skin dimpling as a complication of hamstring harvesting following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction

Surgical intervention to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) with autogenous hamstring tendons has become popular. However, hamstring graft harvesting complications can occur. This article presents a case of skin dimpling over the pes anserinus during active hamstring contraction in a 32-year-old man following arthroscopic ACL reconstruction.     

Kerbs von Lungren 6 antigen is a marker of alveolar inflammation but not of infection in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome

Background  

Kerbs von Lungren 6 antigen (KL-6) is expressed on the surface of alveolar type II cells, and elevated plasma and epithelial lining fluid levels of KL-6 have previously been shown to correlate with the severity of disease and survival in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The relationship between alveolar inflammation and KL-6 measurements has not been ascertained. We hypothesized that the elevation of KL-6 in ARDS is dependent upon the severity of neutrophilic inflammation. Furthermore we were interested in the relationship between significant alveolar infection and KL-6 levels.     

The fascial band from semitendinosus to gastrocnemius: the critical point of hamstring harvesting: an anatomical study of 23 cadavers

Background Arthroscopically-assisted reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament with hamstring tendons has achieved widespread acceptance; however, the anatomy of these tendons may cause technical problems at harvesting.

Methods We studied the anatomy of the fascial band between semitendinosus and gastrocnemius and the distance between the semitendinosus insertion and the origin of this band in 23 knees from cadavers (17 male). The length of the semitendinosus tendon and the width of the fascial band were also recorded.

Results Fascial attachment was detected in all cadavers except 1. The mean width of the band was 2.6 (1-4) cm. The mean distance from the insertion of the semitendinosus to the fascial band was 7 (6-8) cm. The mean length of the semitendinosus tendon was 22 (18-26) cm.

Interpretation A better understanding of the anatomy of the hamstring tendons will reduce the risk of a disappointing complication right at the start of the operation.     

A fifteen-year experience of buttock contouring with combination of silicone implant, liposuction, and structural fat grafting

Buttock augmentation is one of the most popular procedures to shape and augment the gluteal region. The major literature regarding this topic accentuates the role of the implant in gluteal shaping. The goal of this study is to present our personal experience and approach while emphasizing the role of implant positioning and structural fat grafting to yield a more satisfied buttock contouring. Gluteal implants were placed with various orientation mostly the more spherical portion facing inferiorly to simulate the round shape of the midportion of the gluteal region as an alternative to its classical positioning. Patients were analyzed based on the projection as well as the shape and contour of buttocks. Gluteal contouring with rationale positioning of the gluteal implants combined with structural fat grafting may play a role to yield a more satisfied buttock contouring.
