Background: Calls for embracing the potential and responsibility of occupational therapy to address socio-political conditions that perpetuate occupational injustices have materialized in the literature. However, to reach beyond traditional frameworks informing practices, this social agenda requires the incorporation of diverse epistemological and methodological approaches to support action commensurate with social transformative goals.
Aim: Our intent is to present a methodological approach that can help extend the ways of thinking or frameworks used in occupational therapy and science to support the ongoing development of practices with and for individuals and collectives affected by marginalizing conditions.
Method: We describe the epistemological and theoretical underpinnings of a methodological approach drawing on Freire and Bakhtin’s work.
Results: Integrating our shared experience taking part in an example study, we discuss the unique advantages of co-generating data using two methods aligned with this approach; dialogical interviews and critical reflexivity.
Discussion: Key considerations when employing this approach are presented, based on its proposed epistemological and theoretical stance and our shared experiences engaging in it.
Significance: A critical dialogical approach offers one way forward in expanding occupational therapy and science scholarship by promoting collaborative knowledge generation and examination of taken-for-granted understandings that shape individuals assumptions and actions. 相似文献
By controlling the transmission of Chagas disease, the challenge of providing
assistance to millions of infected patients that reach old age arises. In this study,
the socioeconomic, demographic and comorbidity records of all elderly chagasic
patients followed at the Pharmaceutical Care Service of the Chagas Disease Research
Laboratory were assessed. The information related to the clinical form of the disease
was obtained from medical records provided by the Walter Cantídio University
Hospital. The profile of the studied population was: women (50.5%); mean age of 67
years; retired (54.6%); married (51.6 %); high illiteracy rate (40.2%); and family
income equal to the minimum wage (51.5%). The predominant clinical forms of Chagas
disease were cardiac (65.3%) and indeterminate (14.7%). The main electrocardiographic
changes were the right bundle branch block (41.0%), associated or not with the
anterosuperior left bundle branch block (27.4%). The average number of comorbidities
per patient was 2.23 ± 1.54, with systemic arterial hypertension being the main one
found (67.0%). It was found that the elderly comprise a vulnerable group of patients
that associate aging with cardiac and/or digestive disorders resulting from the
evolution of Chagas disease and other comorbidities, which requires special attention
from health services to ensure more appropriate medical and social care. 相似文献
Bladder cancer is the most prevalent tumor in the genitourinary tract and the current treatments are not efficient to prevent recurrence and progression of tumor cases. Studies have revealed evidence of the involvement of the purinergic system in bladder tumorigenesis, particularly ecto-5′-NT/CD73, the enzyme responsible for AMP hydrolysis. Quercetin (3,3′,4′,5,7-pentahydroxyflavone) is a plant-derived flavonoid that has been shown to exert a broad range of pharmacologic properties, including potential anticancer activity. Here, we investigated the quercetin effect on the E-NTPDases and ecto-5′-nucleotidase/CD73, which catalyzes the introversion of the extracellular purine nucleotides in T24 human bladder cancer cells. The results showed that this flavonoid was able to increase ADP hydrolysis and inhibit the ecto-5′-nucleotidase/CD73 activity, with no effect on protein expression. The treatment with APCP (α,β-methyleneadenosine-5′-diphosphate), another ecto-5′-NT/CD73 inhibitor, led to a significant reduction in cell proliferation. In addition, we showed that AMP, which can be accumulating by enzyme inhibition, had an antiproliferative effect on T24 cells, which was enhanced when its hydrolysis was inhibited by APCP treatment. Otherwise, adenosine did not cause any significant effect on cell proliferation and the quercetin effects were not altered by the simultaneous presence of adenosine. Taken together, the results suggest that the antiproliferative effect of quercetin on tumor cells may occur, at least in part, via alterations in the extracellular catabolism of nucleotides, that could be by AMP accumulation, or could be due to blocked adenosine receptors by this flavonoid, supporting the potential use of quercetin in bladder cancer treatment. 相似文献
In a previous study conducted by our group, riparin II (ripII) isolated from the green fruit of Aniba riparia presented antianxiety effects in mice. This study investigates a possible antidepressant activity of rip II using two predictive tests for antidepressant activity in rodents: the forced swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST). Additionally, the mechanisms involved in the antidepressant‐like effect in mice were also assessed. Rip II was acute administered by intraperitoneal (i.p.) and oral (p.o) routes to male mice at doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg. Results showed that ripII at both tested doses and administration routes produced a significant decrease of immobility time in FST and TST. The pretreatment of mice with prazosin (1 mg/kg, i.p., an α1‐adrenoceptor antagonist), SCH23390 (15 μg/kg, i.p., a dopamine D1 receptor antagonist), sulpiride (50 mg/kg, i.p., a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist), p‐chlorophenylalanine (100 mg/kg, an inhibitor of serotonin synthesis), or NAN‐190 (0.5 mg/kg, a serotonin 5‐HT1A receptor antagonist) completely blocked the anti‐immobility effects elicited by riparin II (50 mg/kg, p.o.) in the FST. This study indicates that riparin II produces significant antidepressant‐like activity in the forced swimming and TSTs, and this effect seems to be dependent on its interaction with noradrenergic, dopaminergic, and serotonergic systems. 相似文献
High blood pressure is among the most prevalent chronic disease in adults that impacts on the quality of life of patients, which are often subjected to physical rehabilitation. Chinese medicine intervention in patients with hypertension presents promising albeit inconclu-sive results, mostly due to methodological issues. This paper discusses asserted and neglected issues linking evidence-based and Chinese medicines as related to systemic arterial hypertension, as well as their impact on the physical rehabilitation of those patients. On the one hand, natural history of hypertension, pulse palpa-tion, and herbal therapy are among the asserted issues because of the scientific evidence collected about them, either in favor or against its integration to the current medical practice. On the other hand, anatomical varia-tions of vessels and comparative physiology are among the most commonly neglected issues because previous researches on integrative medicine ignored the pos-sible effects of these issues as related to the study's outcome. The asserted issues highlighted in this paperstimulate the increasing use of Chinese medicine for health care and the continuity of research on integra-tive medicine in the cardiovascular field for rehabilita-tion. The neglected issues poses additional challenges that must not be overlooked in future research on this topic so that the integration of both traditional and cur-rent knowledge may be of benefit to the population with cardiovascular disease. 相似文献
J Oral Pathol Med (2012) 41: 702-712 Background: The aim of this study was to compare clodronate and zoledronic acid regarding their influence on the repair of surgical wounds in maxillae (soft tissue wound and tooth extraction) and their relation to osteonecrosis. Material and methods: Thirty-four Wistar rats were allocated into three groups according to the treatment received: (i) 12 animals treated with zoledronic acid, (ii) 12 animals treated with clodronate and (iii) 10 animals that were given saline solution. All animals were subjected to tooth extractions and surgically induced soft tissue injury. Histological analysis of the wound sites was performed by means of hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining and immunohistochemical staining for receptor activator of nuclear factor-kB ligand (RANKL), osteoprotegerin (OPG), von Willebrand factor, and caspase-3. Results: The zoledronic acid group showed higher incidence of non-vital bone than did the clodronate group at the tooth extraction site. At the soft tissue wound site, there were no significant differences in non-vital bone between the test groups. RANKL, OPG, von Willebrand factor, and caspase-3 did not show significant differences between the groups for both sites of surgical procedures. Conclusion: Both of the bisphosphonates zoledronic acid and clodronate are capable of inducing maxillary osteonecrosis. Immunohistochemical analysis suggests that the involvement of soft tissues as the initiator of osteonecrosis development is less probable than has been pointed out. 相似文献
Carvacrol (5‐isopropyl‐2‐methylphenol) is a monoterpenic phenol present in the essential oil of many plants. It is the major component of the essential oil fraction of oregano and thyme. In this study, the effect of carvacrol was investigated in two behavioral models, the forced swimming and tail suspension tests in mice, to investigate the possible antidepressant effect of this substance. Additionally, the mechanisms involved in the antidepressant‐like effect of carvacrol in mice were also assessed. Carvacrol (cvc) was administered orally at single doses of 12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg. The acute treatment of cvc decreased the immobility time in the forced swimming and tail suspension tests without accompanying changes in ambulation in the open‐field test. The anti‐immobility effect of carvacrol (25 mg/kg) was not prevented by pretreatment of mice with p‐chlorophenylalanine, prazosin and yohimbine. On the other hand, the pretreatment of mice with SCH23390 or sulpiride completely blocked the antidepressant‐like effect of carvacrol (25 mg/kg) in the forced swimming test. These results show that carvacrol presents antidepressant effects in the forced swimming and tail suspension tests; this effect seems to be dependent on its interaction with the dopaminergic system, but not with the serotonergic and noradrenergic systems.
