Ferritin may play a direct role on the immune system. We sought to determine if elevated levels of ferritin in lupus patients correlate with disease activity and organ involvement in a large cohort. Ferritin levels (gender and age adjusted) were assessed in 274 lupus serum samples utilizing the LIASON Ferritin automated immunoassay method. Significant disease activity was determined if European Consensus Lupus Activity Index (ECLAM)?>?2 or Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI)?>?4. Utilizing an EXCEL database, we compared elevated ferritin levels to manifestations grouped by organ involvement, serology, and previous therapy. The patients were predominantly female (89%), median age was 37 years old, and disease duration was 10.6?±?7.7 years. Hyperferritinemia was found in 18.6% of SLE patients. Compared to subjects with normal ferritin levels, a significantly greater proportion of patients with hyperferritinemia had thrombocytopenia (15.4% vs. 33.3%, p?=?0.003) and lupus anticoagulant (11.3% vs. 29.0%, p?=?0.01). Additionally, compared to normoferritinemic subjects, hyperferritinemic subjects had significantly higher total aCL (99.7?±?369 vs. 30.9?±?17.3 GPI, p?=?0.02) and aCL IgM antibody levels (75.3?±?357.4 vs. 9.3?±?10.3 GPI, p?=?0.02), and marginally lower aCL IgG antibody levels (9.2?±?4.9 vs. 9.7?±?3.9 GPI, p?=?0.096). While the ECLAM score significantly correlated with hyperferritinemia (p?=?0.04), the SLEDAI score was marginally associated with hyperferritinemia (p?=?0.1). Serositis was marginally associated with hyperferritinemia, but not with other manifestations. An association with serologic APS was encountered. Hyperferritinemia was associated with thrombocytopenia, lupus anticoagulant, and anti-cardiolipin antibodies suggest that it may be an early marker for secondary antiphospholipid syndrome in SLE patients. 相似文献

This article describes the histological and mucin histochemical properties of the small intestine of the Persian squirrel (Sciurus anomalus). This species is widely distributed in the Middle East and can be found as a companion animal. The histological studies revealed that the plicae circulares were not visible in the tunica mucosa. The maximum height and width of the villi were observed in the duodenum, which then decreased toward the ileum. The muscularis mucosa was scattered, whereas the tunica submucosa was composed of dense connective tissue. The lymphatic nodules were seen in the submucosa of the distal part of the jejunum and ileum, and Brunner’s glands were embedded in the initial portion of the duodenum. The tunica muscularis was significantly thicker in the ileum, and the circular muscle layer was thicker than the longitudinal muscle layer throughout the entire length of the small intestine. The mucin histochemistry, which was examined using the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and alcian blue (AB) (pH 1.0 and 2.5) and also PAS–AB (pH 2.5) and aldehyde fuchsin-AB (pH 2.5) techniques coupled with methylation and saponification reaction for some sections, showed that the small intestine mucous content included both carboxylated and sulfated acidic mucins with few neutral mucins. The results of this study contribute to the knowledge of the histological and histochemical characteristics of the gastrointestinal tracts of exotic mammals and provide data for comparison with other mammals. 相似文献

In this paper we present a fully automated graph-based segmentation algorithm that jointly uses optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) data to segment Bruch’s membrane (BM). This is especially valuable in cases where the spatial correlation between BM, which is usually not visible on OCT scans, and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), which is often used as a surrogate for segmenting BM, is distorted by pathology. We validated the performance of our proposed algorithm against manual segmentation in a total of 18 eyes from healthy controls and patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR), non-exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (early/intermediate AMD, nascent geographic atrophy (nGA) and drusen-associated geographic atrophy (DAGA) and geographic atrophy (GA)), and choroidal neovascularization (CNV) with a mean absolute error of ∼0.91 pixel (∼4.1 μm). To investigate age-related changes in oral motor strategies in response to unpredictable load demands. Sixty-five healthy children (aged 3–17 yr) were divided into five age-groups based on their dental eruption stages and compared with a group of healthy adults (aged 18–35 yr). Each participant was asked to perform a standardized motor control task involving ‘pulling’ and ‘holding’ a force transducer with the anterior teeth. Different loads were attached to the force transducer in an unpredictable manner. The temporal force profile was divided into two time-segments (an initial segment and a later segment). The peak force and peak force rate during the initial time-segment, and the holding force and intra-trial variability (coefficient of variation) during the later time-segment, were measured. The results showed no differences in the peak force, peak force rate, holding force, and force variability in children compared with adults. However, the trends in the data evaluated using a segmented regression analysis showed that a breakpoint (abrupt change) consistently occurred in the late-mixed dentition group (age 9–11 yr) for most of the outcome variables. The results indicate that while the motor control strategies in children appear to be similar to those in adults, there is a shift in the oral motor developmental trend during the late-mixed dentition stage. 相似文献
