This study determined the spectrum of deaths due to acute agrochemical poisoning in Turkey. Data was obtained from all autopsy reports performed between 1997 and 2001, compiled by the Institute of Forensic Medicine (which is a department of the Ministry of Justice), and evaluated retrospectively. There were 3990 deaths by intoxication of one form or another. Acute agrochemical/pesticide poisoning caused 843 deaths. Almost half were under 30 yo; 55% were female and 45% were male. Of 205 deaths whose manner of death was determined, 153 (75%) were suicide; the most common substance used was insecticide followed by sulfur, rodenticides, and herbicides. The pattern appeared consistent from 1997 to 2001 with no decline in the number of cases, despite the government having taken measures to educate the public and reduce pesticide use by offering alternates to control pests and insects.  相似文献

The effects of dantrolene were investigated on carbonic anhydrase (CA) enzyme activities in in vitro human and in in vivo Sprague-Dawley rat erythrocytes. For in vitro study, human carbonic anhydrase-I (HCA-I) and -II (HCA-II) were purified by Sepharose 4B-L-tyrosine-sulfanylamide affinity chromatography, rats were used for in vivo study. In vivo and in vitro CA enzyme activity was determined colorimetrically using the CO(2)-hydration method of Wilbur and Anderson. Dantrolene (1.64 x 10(-5)-6.56 x 10(-5) M) showed in vitro inhibitory effects on HCA-I and HCA-II hydratase activity, when determined using the CO(2)-hydratase method. 50% inhibitory concentration (IC(50)) was 4.09 x 10(-5) M for HCA-I and 3.24 x 10(-5) M for HCA-II. Rat erythrocyte CA activity was significantly inhibited by 10 mg/kg dantrolene for up to 3 h (p<0.001) following intraperitoneal administration. In conclusion, Dantrolene inhibited the carbonic anhydrase enzyme activity under in vitro and in vivo conditions.  相似文献

Effect of sildenafil on anxiety in the plus-maze test in mice   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Several studies have shown a role of nitric oxide/cyclic guanosine monophosphate signaling pathway in the regulation of anxiety. The effects of the phosphodiesterase (PDE) 5 inhibitors on anxiety are not fully understood. The aim of present study was to investigate the possible role of sildenafil, an inhibitor of cyclic GMP-specific phosphodiesterase, on anxiety in the plus-maze test in mice. Sildenafil at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg had no significant effect on the behavior in the plus-maze test but at doses of 1 and 3 mg/kg induced an anxiogenic effect. The combination of sildenafil (1 mg/kg, i.p.) and methylene blue (1 mg/kg, i.p.) abolished the anxiogenic-like effect of sildenafil. The combination of sildenafil (1 mg/kg, i.p.) and L-arginine (50 mg/kg, i.p.) decreased the percentage of time spent in open arms compared to saline-treated group. Diazepam at a dose of 2 mg/kg significantly increased the percentage of time spent in open arms (p < 0.05). Sildenafil at a dose of 3 mg/kg and the combination of L-arginine (50 mg/kg, i.p.) and sildenafil (1 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly decreased the locomotor activity (p < 0.05). These results suggest that a nitric oxide-cGMP pathway seems to play an important role in sildenafil-induced anxiogenic-like effect.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the intra-sessional and inter-sessional variability of the multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG). Right eyes of 20 healthy adult subjects with uncorrected visual acuity of 1.0 were studied. mfERG recordings were obtained in two sessions by using jet corneal electrodes. The responses were averaged over five retinal regions, the central hexagon (CH: 0.0–2.3°) and four concentric rings [ring 1 (R1: 2.3–7.4°), ring 2 (R2: 7.4–12.0°), ring 3 (R3: 12.0–19.4°), and ring 4 (R4: 19.4–30.0°)]. In the first session, recordings were repeated while the electrodes stayed in place (the first and the second recordings). Second sessions (third recordings) were performed 1 week later. Individual coefficient of variation (CV; standard deviation/mean) for P1 and N1 amplitudes and implicit times were calculated for the first to second and first to third recordings to assess intra-sessional and inter-sessional variability, respectively, and were evaluated by Wilcoxon-paired samples test. Regarding implicit time and amplitude of mfERG recordings, there was no significant difference between the first to second and first to third recordings (P > 0.05, Bonferroni-corrected Wilcoxon test). CV values significantly decreased with eccentricity in both intra-sessional and inter-sessional comparisons (P < 0.05, Wilcoxon test). However, partial ring averaging showed no significant difference (P > 0.05) between CV values for single hexagons in each ring. Intra-sessional CV values were significantly lower than corresponding inter-sessional values (P < 0.05, Wilcoxon test). Our results support the importance of electrode replacement on variability. The increased number of hexagons that are averaged is the main factor that explains the lower variability in the more peripheral rings.  相似文献

Biochemical and hematological parameters in blood of rainbow trout treated to various concentrations of propolis for 96 h were determined. Total leukocyte count and granulocytes values increased (p<0.05) in 0.02 and 0.03 g/L propolis groups. There was a decrease in agranulocytes (p<0.05) erythrocytes, hemoglobin and hematocrit values for fish exposed to 0.02 and 0.03 g/L propolis. MCV and MCH values (p<0.05) were significantly increased; 0.02 and 0.03 g/L propolis caused an increase (p<0.05) in the levels of glucose, blood urea nitrogen, triglyceride, total cholesterol, lactate dehydrogenase, amylase and gamma glutamyltransferase. There was a decrease in the levels of aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase. Hematological and biochemical protective effects of 0.01 g/L propolis were investigated. Dose-dependent effects of propolis on blood of fish can be favorable, opening new perspectives of investigation on their biological properties and utilization.  相似文献

Context We report the first ever chemical/biochemical study on Crocus mathewii Kerndorff (Iridaceae) – a Turkish endemic angiosperm. This plant has never been explored for its phytochemistry and bioactivities.

Objective This study explores C. mathewii corm and aerial parts for the chemical and biological properties of hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water fractions of the extracts.

Material and methods Plant material (20 g) was extracted by methanol (250?mL?×?5, 3 days each) and fractioned into hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water. All fractions were subjected to β-carotene–linoleic acid, DPPH·, ABTS·+, CUPRAC, metal chelating and tyrosinase inhibition activities. Hexane fractions were submitted to GC–MS analysis.

Results Ethyl acetate fractions showed excellent IC50 values in DPPH· (aerial 36.21?±?0.76 and corm 33.87?±?0.02?mg/L) and ABTS·+ (aerial 33.01?±?0.79 and bulb 27.87?±?0.33?mg/L); higher than the IC50 of the standard α-tocopherol (DPPH 116.25?±?1.97; ABTS 52.64?±?0.37?mg/L), higher than BHA in DPPH (57.31?±?0.25?mg/L), but slightly lower in ABTS (19.86?±?2.73?mg/L). Methanol extract of aerial parts also showed higher activity than α-tocopherol in DPPH (85.56?±?11.51?mg/L) but slightly less (72.90?±?3.66?mg/L) than both the standards in ABTS. Linoleic (aerial 53.9%, corm 43.9%) and palmitic (aerial 22.2%, corm 18%) were found as the major fatty acids.

Discussion and conclusion Some fractions of C. mathewii showed higher antioxidant activities than the standards. There is a need to explore more about this plant.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the thickness of the peripapillary retinal fiber layer (RNFL) and macula ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCL+) using optical coherence tomography (OCT) in patients with iron deficiency (ID) anemia.

Methods: This study included 73 eyes of 39 patients with ID anemia and 68 eyes of 34 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. The measurements included the peripapillary RNFL thicknesses as average, 4 quadrant and 12 clock-hour (CH) based and macula GCL+ thicknesses as average and 6 quadrant based. All measurements were completed with Cirrus HD-OCT and the results were compared between the groups.

Results: A total of 73 eyes of 39 patients with ID anemia and 68 eyes of 34 healthy subjects were included to the study. Regarding peripapillary RNFL thicknesses of the study and control patients, the values of average and quadrants revealed no significant differences between the groups. In CH sectors comparison, peripapillary RNFL thicknesses were significantly decreased only in CH4 (68.7?±?14.5?μm in study versus 72.0?±?13.4?μm in control patients, p?=?0.049) and CH5 (93.4?±?20.0μm in study versus 102.2?±?20.1?μm in control patients, p?=?0.01) sectors. All measured quadrants were statistically similar, when macula GCL+ thicknesses were compared between the groups. When the correlations between peripapillary RNFL and macula GCL+ thicknesses and serum hemoglobin and ferritin levels of study and control patients were calculated, the only statistically significant parameter was the correlation of peripapillary RNFL thickness in CH10 sector with serum ferritin level (p?=?0.032, Spearman correlation coefficient: 0.369).

Conclusion: The study revealed that peripapillary RNFL is thinner in nasal-inferior quadrant in patients with ID anemia. The measurements of macula GCL+ thicknesses were similar between the groups. Analyzing the retinal layers using OCT may provide valuable information in neurodegenerative events.  相似文献

Context: Anthrax is an endemic disease in developing countries. Human cases are usually associated with animal products. About 95% of naturally acquired cases are cutaneous anthrax.

Objective: In this study, cutaneous anthrax cases from the Elazig province (the Eastern Anatolian region) of Turkey seen in our hospital within a 6-year period were evaluated with respect to epidemiological and clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and outcome.

Methods: Twenty-eight patients with cutaneous anthrax observed between January 2009 and December 2014 were investigated retrospectively. The diagnosis of cutaneous anthrax was based on detailed history, dermatologic findings, including painless, ulcers covered by a characteristic black eschar and/or microbiological procedures, including Gram stain and culture of materials obtained from the lesions.

Results: Of the 28 patients followed up with cutaneous anthrax diagnosis, 14 (50%) were female and 14 (50%) were male. The mean age of the cases was 39.6 years (age range 17–65 years). The patients have an incubation period in the range of 1–9 days (mean 4.6?±?0.5 days). The cases were seen between April and November of each year during the study period. Twenty-three cases (82%) had a history of contact with animals or animal products. Twenty patients (71.4%) showed malignant pustules and eight (28.6%) malignant edema. Bacillus anthracis was isolated in three cases (10.7%) and Gram stain smear were positive in five cases (17.8%). All patients were treated successfully with penicillin or ciprofloxacin. Systemic corticosteroids were added to the antibiotic treatment in six patients with malignant edema. Sepsis no developed in patients, all the cases recovered.

Conclusion: Anthrax is still a serious public health problem in Turkey. Cutaneous anthrax must always be kept in mind when characteristic lesions such as a painless ulcer with vesicles, edema, and a history of contact with animals or animal products are observed in an individual. Early and correct diagnosis significantly affects course of the disease. Protective precautions such as vaccination of animals against anthrax and education of the population would reduce the incidence of the disease.  相似文献

The genotoxicity of tannic acid (TA, tannin) were investigated using chromosome aberration (CA), sister chromatid exchange (SCE), and micronucleus (MN) test systems in human peripheral lymphocytes. Also, the antigenotoxicity of TA against known mutagen EMS was also examined. The lymphocytes were treated with 1.74?×?10(-5), 3.49?×?10(-5), and 6.98?×?10(-5) μM of TA for 24- and 48-hour treatment periods. For the antigenotoxicity of TA, the lymphocytes were treated with three different concentrations of TA and 2.71 μM of EMS. TA synergically induced the CA alone and with the mixture of EMS. However, TA did not induce the SCE alone, whereas TA and EMS as a mixture also synergically induced SCE. TA alone showed no clear effect on micronucleus formation, and it did not induce the MN when used with EMS as a mixture. In addition, TA showed a synergistic cytotoxic effect by decreasing the mitotic and nuclear division indices. The replication index was decreased at all concentrations for 48 hours of treatment time by TA and EMS as a mixture.  相似文献

Lipoma is the most common mesenchymal tumors that accounts for about 6% of all soft-tissue tumors in children. The lesion size is usually around 1-2?cm that rarely reaches the bigger diameter. A 14-month-old baby girl was brought to our clinic for a progressively growing lesion on the left shoulder. The lesion started 4 months ago, and then was rapidly growing that caused pain and movement restriction. On the same site, there was a scar of BCG vaccination. The clinical and histopathological findings of the lesion were consistent with lipoma. The lesion was totally resected with no recurrence within 12 months. There are several complications related to BCG vaccination. However, the occurrence of lipoma on BCG vaccine caused scar has not been reported in literature. We reported this case because of its rarity and to emphasize that lipoma can present as a giant lesion in child.  相似文献
